BACKGROUND: The literature indicates that the prevalence of loneliness is increasing among adolescents. The role of loneliness in cognitive function, appetite hormone regulation, and inflamatory pathways among typically developing adolescents remains unclear.
METHODS: We enrolled 78 adolescents without psychiatric disorders in our study. All participants underwent measurements of appetite hormone (e.g., insulin, leptin, and ghrelin) and inflammatory marker levels (e.g., C-reactive protein, interleukin [IL]-6, and tumour necrosis factor-α) as well as cognitive function assessments (e.g., the W

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether different measures of social disconnectedness-subjective loneliness, network quality, network size, living alone-have differential effects on the health of older adults.
METHODS: We used a longitudinal sample of the German Aging Survey ( N = 4,184) and analyzed seven measures of health (life satisfaction, positive affect, negative affect, depression, cognitive performance, physical functioning, and pulmonary function) via regression analyses.
RESULTS: We found that subjective loneliness and network quality best predicted mental health; contrarily, network size a

BACKGROUND: Loneliness has been associated to several negative health-related outcomes, including dementia. Literature reports a positive association between loneliness and episodic memory. However, there is lack of consensus on the plausible cause-and-effect relationship between both.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims at offering evidence on the plausible causal processes between loneliness and the episodic memory.
METHOD: We employed data from 64,861 individuals participating in the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). Parallel Process Latent Growth Models (PP-LGM) of loneli

IMPORTANCE: Loneliness affects more than half of US adults and has been declared a public health epidemic, yet whether clinically documented loneliness independently predicts mortality across diverse populations remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between clinically documented loneliness and all-cause mortality at 1, 3, and 5 years, overall and by sex, race and ethnicity, and age.
METHODS: We conducted a propensity score-matched retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX US Collaborative Network, comprising electronic health record data from 65 health care organizations.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is a state in which an individual feels socially isolated due to deficiencies in the quantity or quality of social relationships and interaction. To date very little is known about loneliness in Parkinson's disease (PD) and focal/segmental craniocervical dystonia (FSCD).
OBJECTIVES: To explore whether level of loneliness is disease-specific by comparing PD, FCSD and healthy controls (HCs), and to define predictors of loneliness in both PD and FSCD.
METHODS: Eighty-two people with PD, 63 people with FSCD and 50 HC were surveyed. The UCLA Loneliness Scale was used to ass

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is a worldwide concern with significant health implications that may be a significant risk factor for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. In light of the importance of detecting early cognitive changes and risk factors influencing cognitive health, this study examined whether chronic loneliness predicted cognitive changes among young and middle-aged adults.
METHODS: This study utilizes data from a longitudinal measurement burst study spanning over two years, comprising three waves of data collection. A systematically recruited young to mid-life adult sample (25-

Loneliness is a common issue among the elderly, often resulting from reduced social interactions which negatively impact their mental and physical health and overall wellbeing. This study aims to explore the experience of loneliness in elderly individuals and examine how cultural factors and social support can mitigate this condition. Eleven women aged 60 and older, living alone in Simomulyo Baru Village, Surabaya, Indonesia, participated in the study. Data were collected via in-depth interviews and observations, and analyzed using a narrative analysis approach. Contrary to common assumptions,

OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between food insecurity (FI) and loneliness in countries of the former Soviet Union (FSU).
METHODS: Data were analysed from 15,568 adults in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, and Ukraine, collected in the Health in Times of Transition (HITT) survey in 2010-2011. Information was obtained on both FI and loneliness with single-item measures. Logistic regression was used to examine associations.
RESULTS: In a fully adjusted analysis, moderate (OR: 1.35, 95% CI: 1.16-1.57) and severe FI (OR: 1.94, 95% CI: 1.58-2.

Communication among teammates can influence sport experiences of athletes, including burnout. This might occur through sharing of burnout perceptions, fostering development of burnout perceptions in teammates (i.e., contagion). Contagion of burnout may depend on communication frequency with teammates as well as intrapersonal social constructs like loneliness, which can impact attentiveness to or interpretation of communication from others. Our study purpose was to (a) examine if exposure to teammate burnout predicted athlete burnout later in the season and (b) examine if loneliness moderated t

Chronic loneliness has been associated with increased risk for multiple mental disorders. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that problems with emotion regulation (ER) may underlie the course and costs of loneliness, but evidence on the associations between loneliness and ER has not been systematically analyzed until now. The present meta-analysis examined the relations between loneliness and multiple dimensions of ER including the habitual use of common strategies (i.e., rumination, cognitive reappraisal, expressive suppression, distraction), ER difficulties, and ER abilities. A systematic se

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate the independent associations of social isolation and loneliness with incident dementia and to explore the potential neurobiological mechanisms.
METHODS: We utilized the UK Biobank cohort to establish Cox proportional hazard models with social isolation and loneliness as separate exposures. Demographic (sex, age, and ethnicity), socioeconomic (education level, household income, and Townsend deprivation index), biological (body mass index, APOE genotype, diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other), cognitive (speed of processing and visual memo

BACKGROUND: Schizotypy is a multidimensional personality trait related to the heightened risk for the development of schizophrenia spectrum disorders. While it has been suggested that loneliness may be associated with schizotypy in general, whether it relates to the specific schizotypal traits differentially remains unknown. Besides, as loneliness often co-occurs with depression and anxiety, it is important to delineate its relationship with schizotypy in consideration of these co-occurring emotional disturbances.
METHODS: A demographically diverse sample of young people was obtained from mul

Communication and relationships have been dramatically altered among emerging adults thanks to the rapid adoption of the smartphone in just over a decade. Studying the effects of evolving personal technology helps researchers understand both the detriments of widespread adoption and the benefits that accompany the technology. One such area of concern is the relationship of technology with loneliness. Emerging adulthood is described as the period of transition from adolescence to adulthood, taking place from age 18-25. This period is characterized by change, exploration, but also a vulnerabilit

Loneliness is associated with numerous detrimental effects on physical health, mental health, cognition and lifestyle. Older adults are one of the groups at highest risk of loneliness, and indeed about 46% of older adults in England feel lonely. Those experiencing loneliness visit their general practitioner (GP) more frequently than those who are not, which has the capacity to put a strain on GPs and primary care waiting lists and costs. This study's aim was to explore GPs' views and experiences of loneliness within their older adult patients, and to understand GPs' awareness and feelings of a

Loneliness poses a significant risk for morbidity and mortality in the context of older adulthood. Research shows that older persons living with HIV (PLWH) often face increased and complex vulnerability in terms of physical and psychosocial needs which may promote loneliness. The current study sought to identify correlates of loneliness in a sample of 146 older PLWH (age ≥50) recruited from an outpatient HIV clinic in Atlanta, GA. Participants completed a survey on loneliness, depression, HIV-related stigma, social network size, HIV-disclosure status, disease burden, and demographics. HIV biom

INTRODUCTION: The cognitive discrepancy approach to loneliness is often used to describe loneliness in ageing populations, but to date, it has never been used to explore loneliness in older people with an intellectual disability. An analysis is needed utilising a refined list of causes of loneliness in this population.
METHOD: Using data from a nationally representative dataset of people aged over 40 with an intellectual disability (N = 708), this analysis runs repeated regressions of variables grouped into conceptual blocks, organised from sociodemographic to network quality.
RESULTS: Varia

This study examined potential discriminators of groups of older adults showing different patterns of stability or change in loneliness over 5 years: those who became lonely, overcame loneliness, were persistently lonely, and were persistently not lonely. Discriminant function analysis results showed that the persistently lonely, compared with the persistently not lonely, were more often living alone, widowed, and experiencing poorer health and perceived control. Moreover, changes in living arrangements and perceived control predicted loneliness change. In conclusion, perceiving that one is abl

With the growth in the number of older people, an increase of mental health problems might be expected. Reducing the amount of suffering and dependence due to poor mental health in old age is a priority requiring a good understanding of the determinants of psychological distress. The objectives were: (a) to measure the prevalence of psychological distress and loneliness in old men and women, living in the community, (b) to clarify the association between psychological distress, health and other explanatory variables and (c) to determine relationship between loneliness and psychological distres
