Everyday Digital Technology Use and Youth Health: Scoping Review of Longitudinal Studies.

BACKGROUND: Everyday digital technologies such as social media, gaming, and internet use are deeply integrated into the lives of children, adolescents, and young adults. While these platforms can foster connection, learning, and entertainment, concerns have grown about their potential to influence mental, physical, and social well-being. Research on this topic has expanded rapidly over the past decade, yet much of it remains cross-sectional, limiting insights into long-term outcomes. Longitudinal studies are essential to capture evolving patterns of digital engagement, identify causal relation

Pet ownership, successful aging and mortality: a systematic review of longitudinal studies.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Studies suggest that interactions with animals may promote health and successful aging; however, the evidence remains mixed in community-dwelling older adults. This study assesses longitudinal evidence on the associations between pet ownership and successful aging and mortality among community-dwelling older adults. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted a systematic search across six databases for peer-reviewed studies and gray literature. After removing duplicates (1,214 of 3,615 records) 2,401 studies were independently screened by two authors using predefined

Quantifying intra-individual variability in anatomical sites of pain in longitudinal studies.

Longitudinal pain studies present an opportunity to understand intra-individual variations in pain. However, current methods to quantify the anatomical extent of pain fail to capture variations across multiple body sites over time. Our aims were to (1) describe patterns of intra-individual variation in pain sites over time, (2) develop a metric that quantifies intra-individual variation in pain sites over time, and (3) determine whether this metric is related to other indicators of pain burden. We used data from a longitudinal cohort of 72 participants (51 female; median (IQR) age 43 (37-51) y

Placental omics and neuropsychiatric outcomes: A systematic review of longitudinal human studies.

The placenta is increasingly recognized as a key mediator between the prenatal environment and long-term neurodevelopment. Emerging omics studies suggest that placental molecular profiles may predict neuropsychiatric outcomes, yet evidence has remained fragmented and rarely synthesized in a longitudinal framework. Here we present the first systematic review of longitudinal placental omics studies with direct placenta-child linkage, encompassing epigenomic, transcriptomic, and metabolomic approaches. A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, and PsycINFO identified twelve eligible studies (total n

Impact of Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs): A Systematic Review of Longitudinal Studies.

Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs) may mitigate the negative outcomes resulting from Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). To date, most PCE research has used cross-sectional or retrospective designs. PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, PsychINFO, CINAHL, and Scopus were searched in May 2024 for longitudinal studies that examined the impact of cumulative PCEs. Eight publications from five longitudinal studies with a total of 16,451 participants were included. Three studies focused only on adolescent outcomes. PCEs were associated with reduced rates of depression, substance use, delinquent behavior, r

Prevalence-incidence bias in longitudinal studies of rheumatic heart disease in Fiji.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD), a consequence of a dysregulated immune response to Streptococcus pyogenes infection, remains the most commonly acquired cardiovascular condition in under 25-year-olds. Predominantly occurring in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), RHD has an estimated prevalence of 40.5 million cases globally, although RHD complication rates in endemic settings remain uncertain. Accordingly, we undertook a prospective cohort study of RHD mortality and morbidity in Fiji with the aim of comparing complication rates to those estimated in our previous retrospective

Association between Osteoporosis and Meniere's Disease: Two Longitudinal Follow-Up Cohort Studies.

A high rate of Meniere's disease (MD) in patients with osteoporosis has been suggested. This research intended to estimate the bidirectional association of MD with osteoporosis. The ≥40-year-old population in the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort 2002-2019 was examined. In study I, 9529 patients with MD and 38,116 control I participants were analyzed for a previous history of osteoporosis. In study II, 65,858 patients with osteoporosis and 65,858 control II participants were analyzed for a previous history of MD. Stratified Cox proportional hazard models were app

Brain dynamics of (a)typical reading development-a review of longitudinal studies.

Literacy development is a process rather than a single event and thus should be studied at multiple time points. A longitudinal design employing neuroimaging methods offers the possibility to identify neural changes associated with reading development, and to reveal early markers of dyslexia. The core of this review is a summary of findings from longitudinal neuroimaging studies on typical and atypical reading development. Studies focused on the prediction of reading gains with a single neuroimaging time point complement this review. Evidence from structural studies suggests that reading devel

Challenges in conducting multicentre, multidisciplinary, longitudinal studies in children with chronic conditions.

OBJECTIVES: Conducting longitudinal, multicentre, multidisciplinary research for individuals with chronic conditions can be challenging. Despite careful planning, investigative teams must adapt to foreseen and unforeseen problems. Our objective is to identify challenges encountered and solutions sought in a recently completed observational, longitudinal study of youth with cleft lip and palate as well as their caregivers. METHODS: Data for analysis were derived from a 6-year, multicentre, prospective, longitudinal study of youth with cleft conducted from 2009 to 2015 that examined oral health

Exposure enriched outcome dependent designs for longitudinal studies of gene-environment interaction.

Joint effects of genetic and environmental factors have been increasingly recognized in the development of many complex human diseases. Despite the popularity of case-control and case-only designs, longitudinal cohort studies that can capture time-varying outcome and exposure information have long been recommended for gene-environment (G × E) interactions. To date, literature on sampling designs for longitudinal studies of G × E interaction is quite limited. We therefore consider designs that can prioritize a subsample of the existing cohort for retrospective genotyping on the basis of current

Longitudinal studies of IQ stability in children with childhood autism - literature survey.

BACKGROUND: In this paper we present a survey of the literature dealing with IQ stability in children with childhood autism (CA) over the last ten years. Nowadays there is no clear evidence on this topic. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We used the online "PubMed" database. By inputting the following key words: (autism and IQ and child) and (stability or outcome or follow-up) we obtained a total of 78 references. Out of those 78 references, some papers were left out in line with the exclusion criteria, so this survey includes 23 papers altogether. RESULTS: The average initial IQ point is in the range

In vivo trabecular thickness measurement in cancellous bones: longitudinal rat imaging studies.

Using cross-sectional x-ray images taken with zoom-in micro computed tomography (micro-CT), we have measured trabecular thickness in the femoral bones of live rats. Since zoom-in micro-CT is capable of high-resolution imaging of a small local region inside a large subject, we were able to measure trabecular thickness in femoral bones without sacrificing the rats. To longitudinally observe the trabecular thickness change caused by ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis, we have taken zoom-in micro-CT images of 15 live Sprague-Dawley rats (group A: 5 ovariectomized rats fed with regular food; group B:

Latent pattern mixture models for informative intermittent missing data in longitudinal studies.

A frequently encountered problem in longitudinal studies is data that are missing due to missed visits or dropouts. In the statistical literature, interest has primarily focused on monotone missing data (dropout) with much less work on intermittent missing data in which a subject may return after one or more missed visits. Intermittent missing data have broader applicability that can include the frequent situation in which subjects do not have common sets of visit times or they visit at nonprescheduled times. In this article, we propose a latent pattern mixture model (LPMM), where the mixture

Longitudinal studies of West Nile virus infection in avians, Yucatán State, México.

Following the introduction of West Nile virus (WNV) into North America in 1999, surveillance for evidence of infection with this virus in migratory and resident birds was established in Yucatán State, México in March 2000. Overall, 8611 birds representing 182 species and 14 orders were captured and assayed for antibodies to WNV. Of these, 5066 (59%) birds were residents and 3545 (41%) birds were migrants. Twenty-one (0.24%) birds exhibited evidence of flavivirus infection. Of these, 8 birds had antibodies to WNV by epitope-blocking enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Five (0.06%) birds (gray ca

[Longitudinal audiometric studies concerning progression of noise induced hearing loss (author's transl)].

The development of occupational hearing loss is very important for the recommendation to change the work place. 1960 Dieroff has described a phasic development of noise induced hearing loss. After ten years in noisy environment no further development of hearing impairment was determinable. Recent investigations point to a logarithmical respectively linear dependence of noise induced permanent threshold shift on the duration of exposure to noise. During our observation over a period of two years of employees working on noisy jobs, no stay of noise induced permanent threshold shift proceeding co

Frailty transitions, depressive symptoms, and incident dementia: findings from four longitudinal studies.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is a potentially reversible risk factor for dementia. Whether frailty reversal actively reduces dementia risk across diverse populations, and the extent to which depressive symptoms mediate this pathway, remains unclear. METHODS: We included 59,331 adults aged ≥50 from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA). A harmonized 25-item FI defined frailty (FI ≥ 0.25). Primary exposures were baseline frailty

Longitudinal biomarker studies in human neuroimaging: capturing biological change of Alzheimer's pathology.

Despite extensive research, open questions about the biological underpinnings of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) remain. Neuroimaging biomarkers based on positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) offer in vivo insights into these complex biological changes and interactions. However, most evidence to date comes from cross-sectional studies, limiting our understanding of disease progression. Longitudinal studies enable the investigation of biological changes within individuals, revealing how pathology evolves over time. With this review, we provide an overview of how longi

Causal analyses in longitudinal observational studies in oral health: A scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Causal analysis including causal inference and causal mediation is pivotal to inform effective interventions. In modern epidemilogy, causal analysis involves four key steps: formulating causal questions, employing directed acyclic graphs (DAGs), conducting data management and selecting statistical strategies. Our objective was to conduct a scoping review to assess how longitudinal observational studies (LOSs) in dental field have integrated these four steps to contribute leverage evidence that inform oral public health interventions. METHODS: LOSs focusing on determinants of dental
