Management of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis: guide to therapy.

Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC) is an inflammatory response of the conjunctiva triggered by exposure to seasonal allergens. Treatment options for SAC include artificial tears, antihistamines, decongestants, mast cell stabilizers, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, dual antihistamine/mast cell stabilizers, immunotherapy and corticosteroids. Topical, intranasal and systemic formulations of corticosteroids have traditionally provided the most effective relief of the inflammation and signs and symptoms associated with severe, acute exacerbations of SAC. However, steroid-induced ocular an

KPI-121 1% for pain and inflammation in ocular surgery.

Pain and inflammation are common experiences following ocular surgery and, if uncontrolled, can compromise patients' vision, functioning and quality of life. Corticosteroid drugs are available to manage inflammation and discomfort but have limitations in penetrating the ocular mucus barrier to reach the target ocular tissues. KPI-121 1% (INVELTYS®) is a novel formulation of loteprednol etabonate that employs innovative proprietary technology to deliver nanoparticle-sized mucus-penetrating particles to the cornea. Results from clinical trials demonstrate that KPI-121 1% is effective and well to

Loteprednol-Loaded Nanoformulations for Corneal Delivery by Quality-by-Design Concepts: Optimization, Characterization, and Anti-inflammatory Activity.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Loteprednol etabonate (LE) is a topical corticosteroid that uses inflammatory conditions of the eye. It has a low ocular bioavailability and side effects such as corneal disorder, eye discharge, and ocular discomfort. Therefore, it was decided to select the delivery systems, which are solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN), nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC), and nanoemulsion (NE). Design of experiments (DoE) of SLN, NLC, and NE formulations were formulated by using the quality by design (QbD) approach. Precirol® ATO 5 and oleic acid were used as solid and liquid lipids, respectively, in SLN, NLC, a

Which topical ophthalmic drugs work best for Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Dry Eye Disease (DED) is a chronic and multifactorial condition that significantly impacts patient quality of life. Topical ophthalmic drugs (TODs) have emerged as key treatments for DED, offering the potential to address the underlying pathology rather than merely alleviating symptoms. This review aims to assess the efficacy of various TODs in managing the symptoms of DED. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted across three electronic databases to identify relevant articles for inclusion in this review. Two independent authors screened the articles according to predefined

Microsporidial stromal keratitis successfully treated with medical therapy: a case report.

PURPOSE: To report a case of stromal microsporidiosis that responded to medical treatment with systemic albendazole and topical chlorhexidine. METHODS: A 14-year-old adolescent girl presented with a 3-month history of recurrent redness, pain, and dense anterior stromal corneal infiltrate. Repeated microbiological evaluation helped identify microsporidia from the fifth scraping. Initial therapy with fluoroquinolones failed; 0.02% topical chlorhexidine gluconate hourly and 400 mg of oral albendazole twice daily and later 0.5% loteprednol etabonate were given for a total of 12 weeks. RESULTS: T

Extreme intraocular pressure and steroid-dependent iritis.

A 50-year-old ophthalmic technician was referred by her retina specialist for urgent consultation due to markedly elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) unresponsive to medical therapy. Her history included chronic polyarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and chronic uveitis requiring ongoing topical steroid therapy. She had a sub-Tenon injection of Kenalog (triamcinolone) 18 months prior to referral. Chronic topical anti-inflammatory therapy included nepafenac (Ilevro) and prednisolone acetate 2 times a day. Attempts to discontinue topical steroid resulted in worsening inflammation. The patie

Mucoadhesive micellar eyedrops for the treatment of ocular inflammation.

Efficient ocular drug delivery remains a significant challenge in treating eye inflammation due to physiological barriers such as the tear film and frequent blinking, which lead to rapid drug clearance. Commercial eyedrops, like Oceanside® (0.5 % loteprednol etabonate (LE) ophthalmic suspension), suffer from low ocular bioavailability and require frequent dosing to maintain therapeutic levels. To address these limitations, we developed a mucoadhesive micellar drug delivery system to enhance the bioavailability and retention of LE on the cornea. Our system employed polymeric micelles (MCs) func

Topical treatments for blepharokeratoconjunctivitis in children.

BACKGROUND: Blepharokeratoconjunctivitis (BKC) is a type of inflammation of the surface of the eye and eyelids that involves changes of the eyelids, dysfunction of the meibomian glands, and inflammation of the conjunctiva and cornea. Chronic inflammation of the cornea can lead to scarring, vascularisation and opacity. BKC in children can cause significant symptoms including irritation, watering, photophobia and loss of vision from corneal opacity, refractive error or amblyopia.Treatment of BKC is directed towards modification of meibomian gland disease and the bacterial flora of lid margin and
