PURPOSE: Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) is common and devastating complication for patients with rectal cancer who have undergone sphincter-sparing surgery. Prunes are a fiber-rich fruit being effective in treating chronic constipation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of prune consumption on the incidence of LARS.
METHODS: A prospective, double-arm, parallel, nonblinded, randomized controlled trial was conducted from September 2019 to March 2021 at a single tertiary center for patients who underwent low anterior resection. Patients randomized to the prune group con

INTRODUCTION: Rectal cancer is one of the top 10 cancers worldwide. Up to 80% of patients with rectal tumours have had sphincter-saving surgery, mainly due to the large expectation of anal preservation. However, patients tend to experience low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) after rectal resection, which is disordered bowel function that includes faecal incontinence, urgency, frequent defecation, constipation and evacuation difficulties. LARS, with an estimated prevalence of 41%, has been reported to substantially decrease the quality of life of patients. However, no comprehensive preventiv

AIM: To summarize the reported prevalence and causative factors of Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS) from studies using the LARS score.
METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted using Pubmed, Ovid Medline and the Cochrane database. Searches were performed using a combination of MeSH (medical subject headings) terms and key terms. Studies that were included used the LARS score as their primary collection tool. Studies were excluded if initial surgery was not for malignancy, or if the majority of LARS scores were from patients less than 1 year post initial surgery or closure of

Post-operative bowel dysfunction is an important survivorship issue in ovarian, fallopian tube, and primary peritoneal cancer. Cytoreductive surgery often includes rectosigmoid resection, placing patients at risk for low anterior resection syndrome, in which disordered bowel function after sphincter-preserving rectal resection impairs quality of life. Symptoms may precede surgery and worsen after cytoreduction. This review aims to synthesize the available evidence on low anterior resection syndrome and post-operative bowel dysfunction after ovarian cancer cytoreductive surgery and to define re

INTRODUCTION: It is estimated that approximately 70% of patients with rectal cancer who undergo surgery will suffer from Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS). In the last decades, sacral neuromodulation (SNM) has been widely used in urinary dysfunction and in faecal incontinence refractory to medical treatment. Its application in LARS has been investigated and has shown promising results. The paper's aim is to present a systematic review and meta-analysis of the available literature and evaluate the therapeutic success of SNM in patients with LARS.
METHODS: A systematic search was performed

BACKGROUND: Treatment of low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) is challenging. Percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) can improve select bowel disorders. An RCT was conducted to assess the efficacy of PTNS compared with sham stimulation in patients with severe LARS.
METHOD: This was a multicentre, double-blind RCT. Patients with major LARS score were allocated to receive PTNS or sham therapy (needle placement simulation without nerve stimulation). The study included 16 sessions of 30 min once a week for 12 consecutive weeks, followed by four additional sessions once a fortnight for the

Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) is defined as a syndrome characterized by various abnormal defecation symptoms, including increased defecation times, urgency, frequent defecation, and fecal incontinence. LARS commonly develops after sphincter-preserving operation or reduction of protective ileostomy. The symptoms of LARS will alleviate gradually, and some patients may return to normal or basically normal. However, 60%-80% of the patients remains to suffer from LARS. Their daily life and psychosocial functionare seriously impaired. At present, the etiology of LARS is not well understood,

BACKGROUND: We hypothesized that the bowel dysfunction known as low anterior resection syndrome is caused by denervation of the left colon. The purpose of this study is to determine how surgical denervation changes left colon motility and to identify the mechanism of this change.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Strain gauge transducers were implanted on the serosal surface of the descending colon of male SD rats (250-300 g). After a 2-h baseline recording, motility was recorded for another 2 h after either simple left colon manipulation (n = 6) or surgical left colon denervation (n = 6). Various pharm

AIM: The aim of this work was to evaluate the prevalence of low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) and its long-term evolution following colorectal segmental resection for deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE) and identify any associated risk factors.
METHOD: A retrospective observational study was conducted on 124 patients who underwent bowel segmental resection for DIE between 2008 and 2023 at a single tertiary centre. Postoperative rectal function was assessed using the LARS score, and logistic regression analysis was performed to identify independent risk factors for minor/major LARS.

Background/Objectives: The improved long-term survival of rectal cancer patients has led to a major increase in the prevalence of functional complications. Understanding which patients are prone to develop major LARS is important for their preoperative counselling and follow-up. Herein, we aimed to assess the risk factors for LARS. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study on rectal cancer patients. All patient and tumour variables, management plan, type of neoadjuvant therapy, radiation dose to anal sphincter, and perioperative outcomes were collected from the hospital electronic database

BACKGROUND: It was the aim of this prospective study to analyze both feasibility and effectiveness of sacral neuromodulation for fecal incontinence and "low anterior resection syndrome" following neoadjuvant therapy for rectal cancer.
METHODS: All patients who underwent sacral neuromdulation following neoadjuvant therapy for rectal cancer (preoperative radiochemotherapy, oncologic rectal resection with total mesorectal excision) were prospectively enrolled in the study. Only patients with failure of conservative treatment and without any evidence of residual or recurrent tumor disease were ca

BACKGROUND: Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS) is a debilitating complication of sphincter-preserving surgeries, particularly after Total Mesorectal Excision (TME) for very low rectal cancer. LARS adversely impacts bowel function and quality of life, highlighting the need for effective preventive strategies.
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates advanced reconstructive techniques, including taeniectomy pouch (TP), transverse coloplasty (TCP), colonic J-pouch (CJP), smooth muscle plasty (SMP), and greater omentum transplantation (GOT), in reducing LARS incidence and severity.
METHODS: This was
