Financial Incentives to Increase Cardiac Rehabilitation Participation Among Low-Socioeconomic Status Patients: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to examine the efficacy of financial incentives to increase Medicaid patient participation in and completion of cardiac rehabilitation (CR). BACKGROUND: Participation in CR reduces morbidity, mortality, and hospitalizations while improving quality of life. Lower-socioeconomic status (SES) patients are much less likely to attend and complete CR, despite being at increased risk for recurrent cardiovascular events. METHODS: A total of 130 individuals enrolled in Medicaid with a CR-qualifying cardiac event were randomized 1:1 to receive financial incentives on an es

Unemployment and substance use problems among young adults: Does childhood low socioeconomic status exacerbate the effect?

The current study tested whether unemployment predicted young adults' heavy episodic drinking, cigarette smoking, and cannabis use after taking into account individual development in substance use. Furthermore, building on the life course perspective, this study examined whether the link between unemployment and substance use among young adults differed for those who experienced low childhood SES compared to those who did not. Data for the present study came from the Seattle Social Development Project (SSDP), a panel study examining a broad range of developmental outcomes from ages 10 to 33. A

Does low socioeconomic status in early life protect against multiple sclerosis? A multinational, case-control study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The findings from existing research on the association between socioeconomic status (SES) and multiple sclerosis (MS) are inconsistent. Most previous studies are limited to one country and do not adequately adjust for other risk factors for the disease. METHODS: The association between SES and MS was examined using data from the multinational Environmental Risk Factors in Multiple Sclerosis (EnvIMS) case-control study, comprising 2144 cases and 3859 controls from Norway, Canada and Italy. Multiple logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratios and 95% confide

Contextual factors in systematic reviews: understanding public health interventions in low socioeconomic status and disadvantaged populations.

BACKGROUND: Evaluations of public health interventions require an understanding of the contextual factors that shape their effectiveness. Context (including socioeconomic, cultural, and environmental factors) plays a critical role in establishing how interventions achieve impact, why outcomes can vary and whether the interventions of interest can be translated from one context to another. This overview explores the extent to which systematic reviews of public health interventions for low-income or low socioeconomic status (SES) populations report contextual factors influencing outcomes. Causal effect of mandatory elementary education textbooks on literacy and cognition of low socioeconomic status older adults.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has suggested that early-life education can help build cognitive reserve, providing resilience against late-life cognitive decline. The research on education and late-life cognitive health, however, has focused more on developed nations and higher levels of education. This research examines the effects of an elementary school policy on literacy, education, and late-life cognitive health. METHODS: We analyzed, through a shift-share instrumental variable approach, the causal effect on late-life cognitive health of an exogenous policy change that introduced free and

Intestinal permeability before and after albendazole treatment in low and high socioeconomic status schoolchildren in Makassar, Indonesia.

Intestinal helminths are highly prevalent in low-SES children and could contribute to poor health outcomes either directly or via alteration of the gut microbiome and gut barrier function. We analysed parasitic infections and gut microbiota composition in 325 children attending high- and low-SES schools in Makassar, Indonesia before and after albendazole treatment. Lactulose/Mannitol Ratio (LMR, a marker of gut permeability); I-FABP (a surrogate marker of intestinal damage) as well as inflammatory markers (LBP) were measured. Helminth infections were highly prevalent (65.6%) in low-SES childre

Can Programming Improve Executive Functions in Preschoolers? A Pilot Study on Low- and Middle-Socioeconomic Status Schools.

To achieve the United Nations' Sustainable Goal 4 for equitable quality education, many countries are incorporating computer programming into preschool curricula. The main reason for this educational decision lies in the need for a better understanding of the digital world, and also, in the still not fully explored idea that learning to program could have potential collateral cognitive benefits. This pilot study analyzed whether programming instruction enhances executive functions-both key 21st-century skills-, attention and non-verbal intelligence and whether the improvements vary by socioeco

Evaluating the Clinical Effectiveness of Cardiac Rehabilitation among Patients of Very Low Socioeconomic Status Living in Colombia.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) poses a significant health burden, particularly among individuals of low socioeconomic status (SES) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study evaluates the clinical effectiveness of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) in addressing CVD outcomes among very low-SES patients in Colombia. Data from participants enrolled in a CR program in Colombia between 2022 and 2023 were analyzed retrospectively. Measures included heart-healthy behaviors, physical/psychological outcomes, and quality of life assessed at 18, 36, and 60 sessions. Significant improvements were obs

Short and disrupted sleep is related to perceptions of neighborhood in pregnant African American women of low socioeconomic status.

OBJECTIVES: Poor sleep is linked to increased pregnancy complications. African Americans disproportionately reside in disadvantaged neighborhoods with higher crime and traffic, and are more likely to experience poor sleep compared to Caucasians. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between neighborhood environment perceptions and sleep in African American pregnant women of low socioeconomic status (SES). STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional. METHODS: Participants (N = 262) were African American women aged 18-45 with a BMI of 25.0-45.0 kg/m2 and low SES. Perceptions of neighborhood environme

The Impact of Racial and Low Socioeconomic Status on the Implementation of Spinal Cord Stimulation for Chronic Pain in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to review the societal, economic, and racial factors that impact the usage of spinal cord stimulation for chronic pain. Our working hypothesis is that patients of ethnic minority groups or of lower socioeconomic status (SES) status may have lower implantation rates and usage of spinal cord stimulation (SCS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our study sourced publications from PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library on December 21st, 2023 for SCS for the purposes of pain management. Articles were excluded from the review if the study was not USA based, did not involve SCS for th

Social determinants and health-related quality of life in a sample of diverse, low socioeconomic status cancer patients.

OBJECTIVES: In the United States, medically underserved populations, such as ethnoracially underrepresented groups, the limited English proficient (LEP), and the unemployed, may be vulnerable to poor functioning in cancer survivorship. The present study examined whether race/ethnicity, LEP status, and unemployment status were associated with poor health-related quality of life (HRQL) in four domains (physical, social, emotional, and functional well-being (FWB)) in a diverse, low socioeconomic status (SES) sample of cancer patients. METHODS: The sample included 1592 ethnoracially diverse, low

Factorial invariance of the CES-D in low socioeconomic status African Americans compared with a nationally representative sample.

This study examined the factor structure of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) in low socioeconomic status African Americans (n=426). Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the four factors-(1) depressed affect, (2) positive affect, (3) somatic complaints, and (4) interpersonal problems-of the CES-D scale previously found in the general population were supported in this sample. These results were cross-validated in other nationally representative samples of African-American participants (n=988) and Caucasians (n=666), and the four-factor structure of the CES-D s

Poverty levels and children's health status: study of risk factors in an urban population of low socioeconomic level.

To test the hypothesis that the low socioeconomic population living in shanty towns in Porto Alegre presents different levels of poverty which are reflected on its health status, a cross-sectional study was designed involving 477 families living in Vila Grande Cruzeiro, Porto Alegre, Brazil. The poverty level of the families was measured by using an instrument specifically designed for poor urban populations. Children from families living in extreme poverty (poorest quartile) were found to have higher infant mortality rate, lower birth weights, more hospitalizations, and higher malnutrition ra

A scoping review on the use of a participatory approach in interventions to combat overweight and obesity in low socioeconomic status communities.

PURPOSE: The burden of obesity on individuals and society has received much attention. However, most interventions to combat obesity as well as reviews focus on a (bio)medical approach. Applying an interdisciplinary approach that includes participation of the most heavily burdened low-socioeconomic status (SES) groups, are scarce. The purpose of this scoping review is to identify the characteristics and achievements of studies that applied a participatory approach to inform future development of interventions aiming to reduce obesity among low SES communities. METHOD: We conducted a scoping r

Peripheral Geographic District and Low Socioeconomic Status Are Associated With Decreased Access to Biologics in Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Lack of insurance coverage, limited access to health services and lower socioeconomic status (SES) are contributors to inadequate utilization of biologic disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (bDMARD) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The broad national insurance coverage for bDMARDs in Israel provides a unique opportunity to study the impact of SES and geographical location without being biased by the limitation of insurance coverage. METHODS: We identified RA patients using the International Classification of Disease 9th revised codes. "True" RA patients are defined as patients rece

The Associations between Snack Intake and Cariogenic Oral Microorganism Colonization in Young Children of a Low Socioeconomic Status.

Cariogenic microorganisms are crucial pathogens contributing to the development of early childhood caries. Snacks provide fermentable carbohydrates, altering oral pH levels and potentially affecting microorganism colonization. However, the relationship between snack intake and cariogenic microorganisms like Candida and Streptococcus mutans in young children is still unclear. This study aimed to assess this association in a prospective underserved birth cohort. Data from children aged 12 to 24 months, including oral microbial assays and snack intake information, were analyzed. Sweet and non-swe
