Left-sided gastroschisis with meromelia of the limbs: a rare association.

Gastroschisis is a malformation of the anterior abdominal wall that presents as herniation of abdominal contents through a paramedian abdominal defect, usually to the right side of the midline. The defect involves all the layers of the abdominal wall and there is no membranous covering. In newborns with isolated gastroschisis, the overall prognosis is very good. In rare cases, gastroschisis is associated with other congenital malformations, making the prognosis worse. We herein report a rare case of left-sided gastroschisis associated with meromelia of the limbs.

Cortical remapping in amputees and dysmelic patients: a functional MRI study.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate motor cortex function in upper and lower limb amputees and dysmelic patients using fMRI. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Five amputees and two dysmelic patients were examined. Motor and imagery tasks were defined according to each patient limb deficiency. Cortical activation patterns were analysed for each patient and compared between groups, integrating patients clinical data. RESULTS: There is a consistent pattern of cortical reorganization in all amputees: predominance of activation in the ipsilateral motor cortex and extension to premotor and sensory areas of the contral

Accessory muscles of the lower calf.

Two rare cases of accessory muscle of the lower calf observed in dissecting room cadavers are described here. This muscle is supposed to occur in 1% bodies and is implicated in tarsal tunnel syndrome. Occurrence of such anomalous muscles should be considered while examining cases reporting with pain associated with swelling in the region of Achilles tendon since they may mimic a soft tissue tumour.

A Biomechanical Evaluation of Casting Technique and Cast Core Size Effect.

BACKGROUNDS: The goals of this study were to (1) compare the effect of casting technique on biomechanical function with different casting materials and different cast core diameters, and (2) compare the strength of a cast based on the number of layers in relation to the core diameter. METHODS: Two standardized cylindrical cast model sizes were used to simulate forearm and short leg casts (core diameter: 60 mm, 100 mm) with 2 different casting techniques (non-smoothing vs. smoothing with lamination), utilizing 2 casting materials [fiberglass and Plaster of Paris (POP)]. Each cast was created u

Standardization of torsional CT measurements of the lower limbs with threshold values for corrective osteotomy.

INTRODUCTION: Re-establishing anatomic rotational alignment of shaft fractures of the lower extremities remains challenging. Clinical evaluation in combination with radiological measurements is important in pre- and post-surgical assessment. Based on computed tomography (CT), a range of reference values for femoral torsion (FT) and tibial torsion (TT) have historically been reported, which require standardization to optimize the significant intra- and inter-observer variability. The aims of this study were (re-)evaluation of the reference FT and TT angles, determination of the normal intra-ind

Defining Features of the Upper Extremity in Holt-Oram Syndrome.

PURPOSE: To investigate the distinguishing morphological characteristics of children with radial longitudinal deficiency (RLD) in Holt-Oram syndrome (HOS). METHODS: One hundred fourteen involved extremities in 62 patients with a diagnosis of HOS were identified at 3 institutions. Medical records and radiographs were evaluated. Radial longitudinal deficiency and thumb hypoplasia were classified according to the modified Bayne and Klug classification and Blauth classifications, respectively, when possible. Other unusual or distinguishing characteristics were catalogued. RESULTS: There was bila

[The "heart-hand" syndrome in a 8-year-old-boy with short stature].

"Heart-hand" syndrome is a broad category of diseases. The most common form is Holt-Oram syndrome (HOS) that occurs in approximately 1:100 000 live births. It is characterized by upper limb defects (carpal bone defects, triphalangeal thumbs, hypoplasia or absence of the thumb and the radial ray) and cardiac septal defects (atrial septal defects or ventricular septal defects). There are three main types of "heart-hand" syndromes. "Heart-hand" syndrome type I--HOS is characterised by atrial septal defect and thumb anomaly, type II (Tabatznik syndrome) by short distal phalanx of the thumb, upper
