Lunches in UK early years education and care settings: cross-sectional analysis of food processing, provision and intake.

OBJECTIVE: Most young children attend early childhood education and care (ECEC), but little is known about lunch provision, intake and processing. We investigated lunch quality, serving size and consumption within ECECs by provision (packed vs. ECEC provided) using the UK nutrient profile model (high fat, salt or sugar, HFSS), ultraprocessing (UPF) and non-core as food quality measures. DESIGN: Lunches of children attending ECEC were analysed using food photography. Total kcal served/consumed and % total kcal from foods classified as HFSS, UPF or non-core were calculated. Multivariable mixed

[TWO SCHOOL-AGED CASES OF FRUIT GIBBERELLIN-REGULATED PROTEIN ALLERGY WHICH NEED INDIVIDUAL REMOVAL STRATEGY IN SCHOOL LUNCH].

Gibberellin-regulated protein (GRP) is a newly discovered allergen in systemic fruit allergies. The kind of fruits which cause allergy is extensive as GRP is universally included in plants. Two children with GRP allergy were reported. Case 1: A 6-year-old boy experienced anaphylaxis while running after school lunch, which included canned peaches. A skin prick test (SPT) and blood examination suggested that he had peach GRP allergy. Six months and three years later, he experienced a similar episode after eating apple and citrus flesh, respectively. Case 2: An 11-year-old boy experienced anaphyl

The effect of AI-based linguistically tailored health messages on plant-based lunch choices of adolescents: A randomised controlled trial.

Adolescents are a notoriously difficult audience to engage in digital health communication. While many tailoring strategies focus on tailoring what is communicated, far less attention has been paid to how messages are expressed. Addressing this gap, we examined automated AI-based linguistic tailoring as an innovative approach to personalised health communication. Using large language model-based text style transfer, we tailored health messages to adolescents' individual communication styles to examine whether linguistic tailoring enhances persuasive responses and dietary behaviour. To this end

No Free Lunch in Competency-Based Health Professions Education: Exploring Trade-Offs, Value, and Shared Investment in Health Professions Education.

BACKGROUND/PROBLEM: Competency-Based Health Professions Education (CBHPE) aims to improve workforce readiness, patient safety, and equity, but achieving these outcomes requires sustained investment. The "No Free Lunch" (NFL) rule underscores that value cannot be realized without visible costs, which can be financial, cultural, temporal, and structural. Although costs are ideally shared across the health professions education and health care ecosystem, interest holders often invest unevenly despite broad benefits. As a result, many programs and institutions struggle to implement and sustain CBH

Do Children Who Were Preschool Picky Eaters Eat Different Foods at School Lunch When Aged 13 Years Than Their Non-Picky Peers?

BACKGROUND: Picky eating behaviour is characterised by an unwillingness to eat familiar foods, try new foods, and/or strong food preferences. Prevalence peaks at about 3 years of age and usually declines during school years but behavioural characteristics may persist. Parental pressure may influence this. Our aim was to assess food choices in a school setting, away from the family environment, of 13-year-old children who were preschool picky eaters compared with those who were never picky eaters. METHODS: Children were recruited at birth in south-west England and followed to age 13 years. Chi

Lower Energy Intake among Advanced vs. Early Parkinson's Disease Patients and Healthy Controls in a Clinical Lunch Setting: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Unintentional weight loss has been observed among Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Changes in energy intake (EI) and eating behavior, potentially caused by fine motor dysfunction and eating-related symptoms, might contribute to this. The primary aim of this study was to investigate differences in objectively measured EI between groups of healthy controls (HC), early (ESPD) and advanced stage PD patients (ASPD) during a standardized lunch in a clinical setting. The secondary aim was to identify clinical features and eating behavior abnormalities that explain EI differences. All participants (

Determination of micro/nanoplastics on the surface of polystyrene lunch boxes by pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry combined with efficient magnetic capture by Fe3O4 nanoparticles.

In this study, 1 μm glass fiber membranes were used to enrich polystyrene microplastics (PS MPs), and then hydrophilic iron oxide nanoparticle (n-Fe3O4) was used to capture the residual polystyrene nanoplastics (PS NPs), primarily through hydrogen bonding, coordination, and electrostatic interactions. MPs on membranes and NPs captured by n-Fe3O4 were respectively determined by pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). The method was verified by adding PS MNPs standard to ultrapure water. The detection limit of this method was 0.16 μg/cup for PS MPs and 0.03 μg/cup for PS NPs.

There should always be a free lunch: the impact of COVID-19 lockdown suspension of the mid-day meal on nutriture of primary school children in Karnataka, India.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic lockdown in 2020 resulted in school closures with eventual suspension of the mid-day meal programme, biannual deworming and iron-folic acid supplements. One year into the lockdown, we evaluated the impact of the withdrawal of these programmes on the nutritional status of rural primary-school children, aged 6-12 years, in Karnataka, India. METHODS: Anthropometry, haemoglobin, serum ferritin and C reactive protein were measured in 290 children at two time points, 1 year apart, starting from just before the lockdown (February 2020 to February 2021). RESULTS: Th
