Successful pregnancy outcome in Swyer-James-Macleod syndrome.

Swyer-James-MacLeod (SJM) syndrome is a chronic, progressive lung disease as a result of infection and bronchial obstruction that ultimately leads to emphysema. It is associated with chronic cough, sputum production and recurrent chest infections and is occasionally seen in women of reproductive age. The radiological finding of unilateral hyperlucent lung is considered synonymous with the disease entity.

Horseshoe lung in a young child at Tygerberg Hospital, South Africa.

Horseshoe lung is a very rare congenital malformation in which the bases of the right and left lung are fused to each other by a narrow isthmus. Although rare, a hyperlucent area in the lower left lung, close to the vertebral column, may represent a horseshoe lung. Horseshoe lung is often associated with scimitar syndrome. Here, we present a case of a 2-year-old girl who presented with recurrent chest infections and wheezing associated with horseshoe lung. The right lung appeared to be hypoplastic.

Swyer-James-MacLeod Syndrome in a Patient with Eisenmenger Syndrome.

Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome is characterized radiologically by hyperlucency in a single lung lobe, accompanied by reduced vascularity, alveolar hyperdistention, and air trapping, without bronchial airway obstruction. The most common congenital heart defect in childhood, ventricular septal defect, leads to irreversible pulmonary hypertension and Eisenmenger syndrome if not treated promptly. This case report presents a 25-year-old patient with Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome and Eisenmenger syndrome. It is crucial to include Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome in the differential diagnosis of patients wi

Swyer-James Macleod Syndrome With Progressive Hyperinflation.

Swyer-James Macleod syndrome (SJMS) is a rare disorder characterized by unilateral lung or lobar hyperlucency on chest radiographs. We present a case of SJMS with progressive enlargement of the bulla. A lobectomy was performed because the bulla in the right middle lobe had enlarged and compressed the upper and lower lobes, resulting in severe dyspnea. This treatment improved severe dyspnea and pulmonary function. Surgical resection is a viable option for SJCM patients experiencing short-term progression.

Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome with unilateral pulmonary fibrosis: a case report.

Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome is a rare, complex disease characterized by the radiological finding of unilateral hyperlucent lung due to pulmonary oligaemia and alveolar hyperdistention as a consequence of previous obliterative bronchiolitis (bronchiolitis obliterans). Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a chronic, progressive, fibrosing interstitial pneumonia of unknown cause characterized by bilateral, chronic, progressive and irreversible fibrosis limited to the lungs. We report an interesting case of Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome affecting one lung and Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis affecting th

Congenital lung lesions: a radiographic pattern approach.

Congenital lung malformations represent a spectrum of abnormalities that can overlap in imaging appearance and frequently coexist in the same child. Imaging diagnosis in the neonatal period can be challenging; however, the recognition of several archetypal radiographic patterns can aid in narrowing the differential diagnosis. Major radiographic archetypes include (1) hyperlucent lung, (2) pulmonary cysts, (3) focal opacity and (4) normal radiograph. Here we review the multimodality imaging appearances of the most commonly seen congenital lung malformations, categorized by their primary imaging

Adult diagnosis of Swyer-James-Macleod syndrome.

Swyer-James-Macleod syndrome (SJMS) is a rare, complex disease characterised by unilateral hyperlucent lung or lobe owing to loss of pulmonary vasculature and alveolar hyperdistention. Patients with SJMS may be asymptomatic at diagnosis, but its differential diagnosis with asthma is difficult. Almost all the reported cases of SJMS were managed by conservative therapy, comprising prevention and treatment of recurrent pulmonary infections.

Occlusion of the right pulmonary artery: a rare, late complication of radiation therapy.

Two cases of total occlusion of the right pulmonary artery 22 and 28 years after mediastinal irradiation are presented. The first patient is alive 29 years after the radiation therapy, and the second patient died of heart failure 31 years after the therapy. This very rare complication is one cause of radiological unilateral hyperlucent lung syndrome. The diagnosis can be confirmed by clinical history, clinical examination, chest roentgenogram, lung scan and pulmonary angiography.

Swyer-James (MacLeod's) syndrome following pertussis infection in an infant.

Pertussis is a potentially severe disease, especially in infancy. The case of an 8-month-old infant is described who presented the typical radiographic image of unilateral hyperlucent lung or Swyer-James (MacLeod's) syndrome. The infant suffered from pertussis at 20 d of age. A rare postinfectious complication of pertussis is reported.

Neonates with congenital cardiac defects with decreased pulmonary blood flow.

Lesions that cause decreased pulmonary blood flow are those that obstruct the RVOT. In general, the radiographic presentation includes the following: (1) Thin, poorly visualized pulmonary blood vessels with little extension beyond the perihilar region; (2) Dark, hyperlucent lung fields; and (3) Moderate to severe cardiomegaly, depending on the cardiac defect(s) present.

Swyer-James (MacLeod) syndrome with placental transmogrification of the lung: a case report and review of the literature.

Swyer-James (MacLeod) syndrome is an acquired form of unilateral hyperlucency of the lung and is characterized by the development of severe emphysema, bronchiectasis, and/or bronchiolitis obliterans. It may develop as a complication of repeated episodes of pulmonary infection resulting in bronchiolitis obliterans and obstruction of small airways. Most patients with Swyer-James (MacLeod) syndrome can be managed clinically, and the pathologic features of the syndrome have been described in only a few reports. Placental transmogrification of the lung is a rare histopathologic finding that has bee

Chronic lung allograft dysfunction phenotype and prognosis by machine learning CT analysis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD) is the principal cause of graft failure in lung transplant recipients and prognosis depends on CLAD phenotype. We used a machine learning computed tomography (CT) lung texture analysis tool at CLAD diagnosis for phenotyping and prognostication compared with radiologist scoring. METHODS: This retrospective study included all adult first double lung transplant patients (January 2010-December 2015) with CLAD (censored December 2019) and inspiratory CT near CLAD diagnosis. The machine learning tool quantified ground-glass opacity, reticulation

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the left main bronchus mimicking MacLeod's syndrome.

A 15 year old girl who was labelled as having MacLeod's syndrome on the basis of a chest radiograph was subsequently, at the age of 23 years, found to have an adenoid cystic carcinoma obstructing the left main bronchus. This case emphasises the need to exclude a central lesion in cases of unilateral hyperlucent lung.

Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome in a surgically treated child: a case report and brief literature review.

Swyer-James-Macleod syndrome (SJMS) is a rare, complex disease characterized by unilateral hyperlucent lung or lobe owing to loss of pulmonary vasculature and alveolar hyperdistention. Treatment is generally conservative, and surgical management is rare. In fact, only 4 reports on surgically treated children with SJMS are available in the literature. We describe an 8-year-old patient with a history of recurrent respiratory infections since 2 months old. The patient presented with cough and dyspnea on effort. Chest radiograph showed hyperlucency and reduction of the right lung. Computed tomogra

Surgically treated Swyer-James syndrome.

Because patients with Swyer-James syndrome have almost always been treated conservatively, few reports exist of pathological findings of the lung in this syndrome. We report a case of this rare disease treated surgically and discuss pathological findings. A 36-year-old woman repeatedly contracted bronchitis and pneumothorax since adolescence, until April 26, 1997, when she reported chest pain and dyspnea. Chest X-ray on admission showed left pulmonary collapse with a slight deviation of the mediastinum toward the right. Chest computed tomography showed an apical bulla and emphysematous change

Congenital lobar emphysema mimicking cystic mass in a newborn.

Congenital lobar emphysema (CLE) is thought to be a result of obstruction of the bronchus which causes air-trapping and overinflation of lung segments or lobes. It usually presents as a hyperlucent region on chest radiography. However, if there is accompanying retention of lung fluid, the affected region becomes opaque. Of such a lesion, the computed tomography (CT) scans or ultrasonographic findings have been rarely mentioned in the literature. We report the CT and echographic findings of CLE with retained lung fluid in a newborn. The lesion presented as a cystic mass on CT; ultrasonographic

Increased lung field permeability in young patients.

When the chest radiograph of a young patient shows lung hyperlucency, it is important to obtain a detailed clinical history of any previous episodes of childhood infection. Previous chest radiographs should be reviewed to determine whether the condition is congenital or acquired, and thus assist in a diagnosis of SJMS.
