Acquired Lutembacher syndrome or mitral stenosis and acquired atrial septal defect after transseptal mitral valvuloplasty.

Critical mitral stenosis in selected patients may be treated successfully with percutaneous mitral valvuloplasty. Complications of this procedure, particularly an atrial septal defect following transseptal approach, are generally of minor clinical significance. We describe a woman who initially underwent a successful percutaneous double-balloon mitral valvuloplasty via the transseptal approach. Three months later she presented with right-sided heart failure. Color Doppler echocardiography and cardiac catheterization demonstrated an atrial septal defect (ASD) as well as restenosis of the mitral

Lutembacher syndrome in a middle-aged woman in Ghana with an extremely large atrial septal defect.

Lutembacher syndrome (LS) is a rare heart disorder characterized by a congenital or acquired combination of the atrial septal defect (ASD) and mitral stenosis. In LS, patients may be asymptomatic for years, but early detection and treatment result in a better prognosis. In contrast, the prognosis is usually poor, with conservative treatment if the diagnosis is late and the patient develops heart failure and pulmonary hypertension. Although rheumatic heart disease (RHD) and congenital heart disease are prevalent in Ghana, cases of LS are not reported. Here, we report the case of a 45-year-old w

Lutembacher syndrome presenting as heart failure in an old female from rural Nepal: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND SIGNIFICANCE: Lutembacher syndrome (LS), combining atrial septal defect (ASD) and mitral stenosis (MS), is rare, particularly in rural areas. This case presents a 55-year-old Nepalese woman with LS symptoms; however, financial constraints hindered surgical treatment, highlighting LS challenges and the need for early intervention in resource-limited settings. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old woman from rural Nepal presented with 30-day leg swelling and shortness of breath. Apart from autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) and smoking, she had no significant comor

Combined Percutaneous Procedure in Patient with Lutembacher Syndrome: A Case Report and Real-World Experience Review.

Even cardiac surgery has been accepted as the standard therapy for Lutembacher syndrome, a combination of congenital ostium secundum atrial septal defect (ASD) and acquired mitral valve stenosis (MVS), it also owns many limitations and disadvantages. Therefore, seeking for a less invasive therapy with the same efficacy may be worthwhile. Thanks to the development in technology and experience gaining in cardiovascular intervention, the combination of the two proved effective procedures, including percutaneous MVS treatment using balloon valvuloplasty and percutaneous ASD closure using atrial se

Suggested new operative approach in the treatment of Lutembacher's syndrome, with moderately hypoplastic left ventricle.

Lutembacher's syndrome or ASD secondum and rheumatic mitral stenosis is treated with surgery but in some instances of presence of small left ventricle surgery will lead to death. Nazem's approach which is our Staged Suggested Method has saved several patients with this kind of pathology.

Progressive Right-Sided Heart Failure and Secondary Tricuspid Valve Disease in Pediatric Lutembacher Syndrome: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Lutembacher syndrome (LS) is a rare condition characterized by the coexistence of mitral stenosis (MS) and an atrial septal defect (ASD). Clinical manifestations vary according to the severity of MS and the size of the ASD. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 13-year-old female with congenital MS and a secundum ASD who presented with decompensated right heart failure after being lost to follow-up for 10 years. Progressive worsening of MS and enlargement of the ASD resulted in significant left-to-right shunting, severe right heart volume overload, pulmonary hypertension, tricuspid annul

Lutembacher syndrome with congenital atrial septal defect in an 18-year-old female: a rare case report.

INTRODUCTION: Lutembacher syndrome (LS) is a rare condition with congenital atrial septal defect (ASD) and mitral stenosis (MS), often post-rheumatic illness. Diagnosis uses Doppler echocardiography, and treatment may involve surgery or percutaneous options. CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-year-old female presented with worsening dyspnea, orthopnea, and potential undiagnosed rheumatic fever. Chest X-ray showed cardiomegaly. An echocardiogram revealed left atrial dilation and mitral stenosis with regurgitation, aortic valve showed thickening without stenosis, and the right ventricle was mildly dilate

Rapid progression of mitral stenosis after atrial septal defect closure in a Lutembacher's syndrome patient.

The combination of the atrial septal defect (ASD) and mitral stenosis (MS) is an unusual clinical entity called Lutembacher's syndrome. The hemodynamic interaction between the two cardiac malformations modifies the disease progression of each other. The symptom and progression of MS were thought to be slowed because of the existence of a left-to-right shunt that relived the blood flow through the mitral orifice. There is no consensus about caring this patient population for now. Here, we present a 58-year-old female with mild MS and coexistent ASD experiencing rapid progression of mitral valve

Total surgical correction of Lutembacher syndrome associated with partial anomalous connection of the pulmonary veins and tricuspid regurgitation.

Lutembacher syndrome is characterized by the association of mitral stenosis and atrial septal defect (ASD), usually of the ostium secundum type. The association between superior vena cava-type ASD and partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection is unusual and there are few descriptions in the literature. We report this condition in a 24-year-old woman who was admitted to the hospital with a 1-year history of progressive dyspnea and describe the successful surgical repair following mitral commissurotomy and tunneling of the anomalous pulmonary veins to the left atrium, which determines the cl

An Incidental Diagnosis of Rheumatic Mitral Stenosis and Secundum Atrial Septal Defect (Lutembacher's Syndrome) in a Young Woman.

Lutembacher's syndrome is a rare cardiovascular defect comprising of mitral stenosis and atrial septal defect. A combination of acquired mitral stenosis and congenital atrial septal defect is the most well-recognized pattern. As atrial septal defect acts as a pressure relieving gateway, signs and symptoms of mitral stenosis may be attenuated and/or delayed in such patients. We have presented a case with Lutembacher's syndrome that was incidentally diagnosed as having such defect during outpatient check-up for upper respiratory infection.

Lutembacher syndrome variant: Rheumatic heart disease involving all four valves and associated with an atrial septal defect in a child.

Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is the most common cause of acquired heart disease in children and young adults in developing countries. It results from throat infection with group A beta hemolytic streptococcus that proceeds to acute rheumatic fever (ARF). We report a 13 years old girl from Darfur presenting with recurrent acute rheumatic fever for 4 years that led to affection of all her heart valves with severe mitral and tricuspid regurgitation together with moderate pulmonary and mild aortic valve regurgitation. There was an associated atrial septal defect (Lutembacher syndrome variant). Th

A rare case of Lutembacher's syndrome presenting with low-gradient severe mitral stenosis: case report and literature overview.

BACKGROUND: Lutembacher's syndrome refers to the rare combination of atrial septal defect and mitral stenosis. This condition is still underdiagnosed despite its distinct clinical, paraclinical, and therapeutic implications. CASE SUMMARY: We report the case of a 60-year-old woman presenting with acute congestive heart failure. Investigations revealed the combination of low-gradient severe rheumatic mitral stenosis and ostium secundum atrial septal defect. Despite the medical team's conservative management of her condition and recommendation for surgical intervention, the patient chose to disc

A Case Series on Successful Surgical Management of Patients Presenting With Lutembacher's Syndrome to a Tertiary Healthcare Center in Northern India.

Atrial septal defect (ASD), whether congenital or iatrogenic, and mitral stenosis (MS), whether congenital or acquired, may all come together into a condition called Lutembacher's syndrome (LS). The ASD is typically larger than 15 mm in a normal LS case. However, congenital ASD is less frequent than residual iatrogenic ASD in the current era of percutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty for acquired MS. This is referred to as iatrogenic LS by cardiologists. Hereby, we report a case series of three patients who presented to us, were diagnosed with LS, a very rare entity, and were managed success

Lutembacher's syndrome with small atrial septal defect diagnosed by transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography that underwent mitral valve replacement.

Lutembacher's syndrome is a rare clinical combination of congenital ostium secundum atrial septal defect associated with acquired mitral valve stenosis (usually rheumatic). This unusual cardiac entity is difficult to diagnose clinically because each lesion alters the hemodynamics and clinical characteristics of the other. The resulting clinical manifestations depend chiefly on the size of the defect, the severity of the mitral stenosis, and the compliance of the right ventricle. We present a classic case of Lutembacher's syndrome and illustrate the pitfalls and advantages of echocardiography i

Lutembacher's Syndrome in a 45-Year-Old Female From Ambo University Hospital of Ethiopia: A Case Report and literature Review.

Lutembacher's syndrome is characterized by an atrial septal defect (ASD) combined with mitral stenosis (MS) of variable severity, both of which can be either congenital or acquired with or without the presence of varying grades of mitral regurgitation. Appropriate diagnosis with the optimal therapy depends on knowing the syndrome. Furthermore, optimal medical therapy with or without surgical closure of the atrial septal defect is the standard of care for better patient outcomes.
