Lycium barbarum polysaccharide attenuates the cytotoxicity of mutant huntingtin and increases the activity of AKT.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an inherited neurodegenerative disease that is caused by the abnormal expansion of CAG repeats in the gene encoding huntingtin (Htt). Reduced AKT phosphorylation and inhibited AKT activity have been shown to be involved in mutant Htt (mHtt)-induced cell death. Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP), the main bioactive component of Lycium barbarum, reportedly has neuroprotective roles in neural injuries, including neurodegenerative diseases. Here, we report that treatment with LBP can increased the viability of HEK293 cells that stably expressed mHtt containing 160 gl

Mechanisms of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides in reducing radiation-induced spinal cord neuron damage.

This study investigates the protective effects of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBPs) on X-ray radiation-induced damage in rat spinal cord neurons (SCNs) and examines whether this protection is mediated through the activation of autophagy. In vitro and in vivo experiments revealed that high-dose radiation significantly reduced SCN viability and colony-forming ability. However, treatment with 40 mg/L LBP markedly increased cell survival and autophagy levels. Immunohistochemistry and Western blot (WB) analyses demonstrated a significant upregulation of autophagy-related proteins, protein 1 li

Metabolomic and phytochemical insights into tree age effects on Lycium barbarum fruits quality.

Tree age plays a crucial role in determining metabolite accumulation in Lycium barbarum L. fruits (LBF), yet the optimal age for achieving peak nutraceutical value remains unclear. In this study, we systematically investigated the effects of tree age (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 15 years; Y2-Y15) on the bioactive compounds and metabolic profiles of LBF. The results revealed pronounced age-dependent variations: total polysaccharides and carotenoids peaked at Y6 and Y8, whereas total polyphenols and flavonoids reached their highest levels at Y10. Distinct accumulation patterns were also observed for ind
