The effect of trematode infection on the markers of oxidative stress in the offspring of the freshwater snail Lymnaea stagnalis.

Most invertebrate species exhibit immunological responses that can inactivate and eliminate penetrating parasites. Such immune responses in particular involve the formation of potentially toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS). We explored the immune capabilities of the first-generation (F1) offspring of naturally infected freshwater snails, Lymnaea stagnalis, in response to infection by trematode cercariae under laboratory conditions. The rates of ROS formation and peroxidase activity in the hemolymph of the F1 offspring of L. stagnalis parents infected by an asexual stage of trematodes were sig

Seasonal transmission of Fasciola hepatica in cattle and Lymnaea (Fossaria) humilis snails in central Mexico.

A 19-month study on the prevalence of fasciolosis in 30 naturally infected cows, the presence of infected and non-infected Lymnaea (Fossaria) humilis snails, and variation in soil temperature and humidity is reported. The prevalence of fasciolosis in cattle declined from around 50% in March to 30% in July, then, it increased from August, reaching a plateau of 100% in November-January, before gradually declining thereafter. A rise in soil humidity and temperature in June and July, respectively, which peaked between August and November was observed. In July, L. (F.) humilis snails appeared, but

Aspects of the maintenance of the life cycle of Fasciola hepatica in Lymnaea columella in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Fascioliasis is a parasitic disease of domestic ruminants that occurs worldwide. The lymnaeid intermediate hosts of Fasciola hepatica include Lymnaea columella, which is widely distributed in Brazil. A colony of L. columella from Belo Horizonte, MG, was reared in our laboratory to be used in studies of the F. hepatica life cycle, the intermediate host-parasite relationship and development of an anti-helminthic vaccine. In the first experiment 1,180 snails were exposed to miracidia of F. hepatica eggs removed from the biliary tracts of cattle from the State of Rio Grande do Sul. In the second a

[Natural infestation of Lymnaea truncatula Muller by Fasciola hepatica in the Tozeur oasis in southwest Tunisia].

Natural infestation of Lymnaea truncatula by Fasciola hepatica was studied at various sites in the traditional oasis of Tozeur 8 times between September 1997 and August 1998. Infestation of snails was documented in five of the eight sites with a mean level of 26.1 p. 100. Level of infestation varied depending on the site. It was highest in secondary irrigation canals (32.8 p. 100), seguias, (34.8 p. 100), and secondary drainage canals (34.8 p. 100). Lower levels were observed in the main drainage canal, (15.2 p. 100). Two infestation periods were noted at two sites in relation with spreading o

Role of cAMP in electrical and secretory activity of the neuroendocrine caudo-dorsal cells of Lymnaea stagnalis.

The peptidergic neuroendocrine caudo-dorsal cells (CDC) in the cerebral ganglia of the freshwater snail Lymnaea stagnalis L. produce an ovulation-stimulating neurohormone (CDCH). Release occurs by exocytosis in a calcium-dependent way from axon terminals in the periphery of the intercerebral commissure, particularly during a period of electrical activity (the 'discharge'). An important factor in electrical and, hence, secretory activity of the CDC appears to be cyclic adenosine 3', 5'-monophosphate (cAMP). Incubation of cerebral ganglia in snail Ringer with the cAMP-analogue 8-(4-chlorophenylt

Lymnaea schirazensis, an overlooked snail distorting fascioliasis data: genotype, phenotype, ecology, worldwide spread, susceptibility, applicability.

BACKGROUND: Lymnaeid snails transmit medical and veterinary important trematodiases, mainly fascioliasis. Vector specificity of fasciolid parasites defines disease distribution and characteristics. Different lymnaeid species appear linked to different transmission and epidemiological patterns. Pronounced susceptibility differences to absolute resistance have been described among lymnaeid populations. When assessing disease characteristics in different endemic areas, unexpected results were obtained in studies on lymnaeid susceptibility to Fasciola. We undertook studies to understand this disea

[Predation of Lymnaea (Galba) truncatula Müller by Zonitoides nitidus Müller (Mollusca Gastropoda Pulmonata) (author's transl)].

Zonitoides nitidus is omnivorous with carnivorous tendancies: the presence of food coming from snails is required for growth of this predator. This snail is not selective for the choice of its preys. Zonitoides cannot be taken for an absolute predator for all growing periods of Lymnaea truncatula: eggs and large snails are not eaten. This species can be cannibal.

The effect of abiotic factors on the toxicity of cypermethrin against the snail Lymnaea acuminata in the control of fascioliasis.

Every month during the year 2006-2007, the 24, 48, 72 and 96 h LC50 values of a molluscicide, cypermethrin, were determined for a snail Lymnaea acuminata, with concomitant estimation of levels of temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide and electrical conductivity, both in control and test water. On the basis of a 24 h toxicity assay, it was noted that LC50 values of 10.39, 10.90 and 11.19 mg l- 1 during the months of May, June and July, respectively, were most effective in killing the snails, while the molluscicide was least effective in the month of January, when its 24 h LC50 wa

Unusual transmission of the liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica, by Lymnaea glabra or Planorbis leucostoma in France.

Cases of fasciolosis in ruminants have been recorded in several French farms in the absence of Lymnaea truncatula, which is considered the only snail intermediate host in western Europe. These farms harbored other species of freshwater snails in large numbers (Lymnaea glabra, Physa acuta, or Planorbis leucostoma) and, in many cases, had cattle or sheep infected by another trematode (Paramphistomum daubneyi). These other freshwater snails may serve as intermediate hosts for F. hepatica due to a coexisting infection with P. daubneyi. We have demonstrated that L. glabra, either infected with F. h

The chemical and biological control of Lymnaea truncatula in natural watercress beds in the Limousin region (France).

The snails present in 17 natural watercress beds have been treated during 1 or 2 years by a control associating the use of a molluscicide (CuCl2) and the introduction of a predatory snail, Zonitoides nitidus. Lymnea truncatula was eliminated in only one year of treatment in 14 stations, and in two years in the three others. Elimination of other aquatic pulmonate snails was effected in two years for L. glabra, in 3 years for L. palustris, and in only one year for Physa acuta. Z. nitidus has disappeared from 12 watercress beds during the 4th year after treatment; in the five others, the numbers

Axonal branching pattern and coupling mechanisms of the cerebral giant neurones in the snail, Lymnaea stagnalis.

The axonal branching pattern of the two cerebral giant neurones (CGCs) of Lymnaea stagnalis was studied with intrasomatically applied horseradish peroxidase. The cells are symmetrical. Each CGC projects to the ipsilateral n. labialis medius and n. arteriae labialis, the subcerebral commissure, and to all ipsi- and contralateral buccal nerves. The contralateral buccal nerves are reached via the ipsilateral cerebro-buccal connective and the buccal commissure. The CGC fire action potentials 1:1 in a driver-follower relationship. Each cell is capable of both driving and following. The relationship

Dynamics of Lymnaea natalensis populations in the Zaria area (Nigeria) and the relation to Fasciola gigantica infections.

Observations on the seasonal changes in the Lymnaea natalensis population and the infection rate of these snails with Fasciola gigantica during 1972-1976 are reported. The data were obtained from snails in three different locations near Zaria in Northern Nigeria. One of the survey sites dried out during the drought of 1972-1974 and had to be abandoned. The snail population showed seasonal variations with the lowest number of snails at the very end of the dry season. Many juvenile snails developed at the end of the wet season and beginning of the dry season, and the population reached its clima

Molluscicidal activities of Senna alata silver nanoparticles against adult and egg stages of Lymnaea natalensis.

Fascioliasis, a significant foodborne parasitic disease, is transmitted via Lymnaea natalensis snails. This study evaluated the molluscicidal activities of Senna alata ethanolic extracts and its green-synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) against adult L. natalensis and its ova. AgNPs were synthesized using S. alata leaf extract, confirmed by UV-visible spectroscopy with an absorption peak at 362 nm. Characterization via XRD revealed crystalline peaks at 2θ values of 25.50°, 30.50°, and 38.00°, while SEM showed irregularly shaped particles averaging 20.32 nm with an elemental composition of

[Molluscacidal activity of Paraiso (Melia azedarach L.) (Meliaceae) on Lymnaea cubensis, host snail of fascioliasis].

INTRODUCTION: Fasciolosis is a source of serious economic loss in various regions of Brazil and when control measures of its host (molluscs) are not taken under favorable ecological conditions, isolated cases of human Fasciolosis may occur. Among the alternative measures for its control is the use of vegetable extracts and the purpose of this project is the assessment of the use of juice extracted from the fruit and seeds of the Paraiso plant (Melia azedarach L.) in the control of Lymnaea cubensis, the main vector of Fasciolosis in Cuba. Discovery and pleiotropic effects of a "Feeding Circuit-Activating Peptide"-type neuropeptide in the mollusk Lymnaea stagnalis.

Neuropeptides play a central role in the regulation of animal physiology and behavior. Mollusks have been pivotal in the discovery of neuropeptide signaling, yet the diversity and functional roles of neuropeptides remain incompletely understood across the phylum. In this study, we identified and characterized a novel Feeding Circuit-Activating Peptide (FCAP)-type neuropeptide in the widely used molluscan model, the great pond snail (Lymnaea stagnalis). Using mass spectrometry imaging (MSI), we detected a new peptide, ALDLSGGFNVHGW, which differs by a single amino acid from FCAPb (ALDLSGGFQVHGW

Dominant gingers - Discovery and inheritance of a new shell polymorphism in the great pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis.

Color polymorphism is a classic study system for evolutionary genetics. One of the most color-polymorphic animal taxa is mollusks, but the investigation of the genetic basis of color determination is often hindered by their life history and the limited availability of genetic resources. Here, we report on the discovery of shell color polymorphism in a much-used model species, the great pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis. While their shell is usually beige, some individuals from a Greek population show a distinct red shell color, which we nicknamed Ginger. Moreover, we found that the inheritance fits

Combination of molluscicides with attractant carbohydrates and amino acids in bait formulation against the snail Lymnaea acuminata.

AIM: Fascioliasis is an important helminth disease caused by Fasciola (F.) hepatica and F gigantica of Asia and Africa. This disease belongs to the plant-borne trematode zoonoses. Human infection has been reported in 51 different countries from 5 continents. One of the possible approaches to control this problem is to interrupt the life cycle of the parasitic trematodes by eliminating the snail. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Snails attractant pellets (SAP) were prepared from binary combination of carbohydrate + amino acid (20 mM) in 2% agar solution with active molluscicidal component Ferula asafoet
