Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in the Japanese often shows different clinical features from those described in Caucasians. For example, we often observe choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in elderly patients without drusen in the fundus. The high incidence of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) in AMD among Japanese is well-known. The reason why such differences occur in clinical manifestations of AMD has been one of my main interests. In this review article, I will discuss the characteristics of AMD in the Japanese population, as found in our recent study. I. Prevalence and clinic

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is increasingly recognized as a complex genetic disorder in which one or more genes contribute to an individual's susceptibility for developing the condition. Twin and family studies as well as population-based genetic epidemiologic methods have convincingly demonstrated the importance of genetics in AMD, though the extent of heritability, the number of genes involved, and the phenotypic and genetic heterogeneity of the condition remain unresolved. The extent to which other hereditary macular dystrophies such as Stargardts disease, familial radial drusen

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a major cause of vision loss worldwide. The disease is caused by deterioration of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), a tissue that plays critical roles in the support of the photoreceptors. Cell therapies to replace damaged RPE in the non-exudative form of AMD have been under development for several decades. We review the progress of cell therapy to date and highlight some promising future directions for research in this area.

PURPOSE: This study aims to conduct a mini review of published literature concerning the role of exosomes in the field of ophthalmology, with a specific focus on Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).
METHODS: In this study, a comprehensive search was conducted using PubMed and Google Scholar to identify relevant publications. Additionally, trials submitted to clinicaltrials.gov were reviewed to identify further relevant articles. The selected studies specifically focused on the ocular implications of exosomes in Age-Related Macular Degeneration.
RESULTS: Exosomes, small extracellular vesic

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical characteristics and 1-year follow-up of patients with neovascular AMD (nAMD) without drusen in either eye.
METHODS: This is a multicentre retrospective cohort study in three tertiary referral centres in The Netherlands. We included patients of 55 years or older with nAMD in one or both eyes, without the presence of drusen or signs of another underlying disease in either eye. The medical charts and multimodal imaging (MMI) were evaluated by two independent graders. Eyes were divided into two groups: polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV)-associated macular ne

PURPOSE: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in developed nations. Within the retina, a subset of cells, called melanopsin-containing intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells, are implicated in circadian rhythms, prompting a search for a potential connection between circadian behavior and AMD. Our objective was to compare the chronotype (ie, preference for morning or evening activity) of individuals with AMD to that of those without ocular conditions.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The Horne-Östberg Morningness-Eveningness questionnaire was administered

One of the major causes of vision impairment among elderly people in developed nations is age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The distinctive features of AMD are the accumulation of extracellular deposits called drusen and the gradual deterioration of photoreceptors and nearby tissues in the macula. AMD is a complex and multifaceted disease influenced by several factors such as aging, environmental risk factors, and a person's genetic susceptibility to the condition. The interaction among these factors leads to the initiation and advancement of AMD, where genetic predisposition plays a cru

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a chronic multifactorial degenerative eye disease and one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide. Despite extensive research, there is no consensus on the predominant pathological mechanism leading to photoreceptor death. AMD is associated with molecular and cellular disruptions that ultimately result in photoreceptor degeneration. This review summarizes data from international and Russian studies on the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the development and progression of photoreceptor degeneration, presents scientific develop

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a complex and multifactorial disease characterized by the damage of the unit comprised of the photoreceptors, retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), Bruch's membrane, and choriocapillaris. Although the outer retina appears to be mainly affected in this disorder, several evidences exhibit that also the inner retina may be impaired. In this review we will provide a description of the prominent histologic and imaging findings suggesting an inner retinal loss in these eyes. In details, structural optical coherence tomography (OCT) technology proved either the i

BACKGROUND: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common eye disease and leading cause of sight loss worldwide. Despite its high prevalence and increasing incidence as populations age, AMD remains incurable and there are no treatments for most patients. Mounting genetic and molecular evidence implicates complement system overactivity as a key driver of AMD development and progression. The last decade has seen the development of several novel therapeutics targeting complement in the eye for the treatment of AMD. This review update encompasses the results of the first randomised controlled

Genomic studies in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) have identified genetic variants that account for the majority of AMD risk. An important next step is to understand the functional consequences and downstream effects of the identified AMD-associated genetic variants. Instrumental for this next step are 'omics' technologies, which enable high-throughput characterization and quantification of biological molecules, and subsequent integration of genomics with these omics datasets, a field referred to as systems genomics. Single cell sequencing studies of the retina and choroid demonstrated

Damage to the retinal pigment epithelium, Bruch's membrane and/or tissues underlying macula is known to increase the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD is commonly categorized in two distinct types, namely, the nonexudative (dry form) and the exudative (wet form). Currently, there is no ideal treatment available for AMD. Recommended standard treatments are based on the use of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), with the disadvantage of requiring repeated intravitreal injections which hinder patient's compliance to the therapy. In recent years, several synthetic and natu

Increasing evidence over the past two decades points to a pivotal role for immune mechanisms in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) pathobiology. In this chapter, we will explore immunological aspects of AMD, with a specific focus on how immune mechanisms modulate clinical phenotypes of disease and severity and how components of the immune system may serve as triggers for disease progression in both dry and neovascular AMD. We will briefly review the biology of the immune system, defining the role of immune mechanisms in chronic degenerative disease and differentiating from immune responses

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) remains a leading cause of blindness worldwide. The assessment and management of patients with this condition has evolved in the last decades. In this chapter, current standards for diagnosis, follow-up, and treatment of patients with AMD are reviewed and summarized. Namely, we highlight how current assessment has moved from conventional ophthalmoscopy and fluorescein angiography testing to a multimodal approach, and its important advantages. Alternatives to visual acuity for functional assessment of patients with AMD are also presented. Regarding strateg

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical and multimodal imaging (MMI) features of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) eyes presenting with intraretinal exudation and no evidence of neovascularization or structural alterations of native retinal vessels.
METHODS: This was a retrospective review of the MMI and electronic health records for 3 consecutive patients presenting with unilateral exudative non-neovascular age-related macular degeneration. MMI included confocal color fundus photography (CFP), fundus autofluorescence (FAF), fluorescein angiography (FA), spectral domain optical coherence tomog
