Conductive magnetite nanoparticles accelerate the microbial reductive dechlorination of trichloroethene by promoting interspecies electron transfer processes.

Playing your part: Conductive magnetite nanoparticles accelerate the microbial reductive dechlorination of trichloroethene (TCE), an ubiquitous and toxic subsurface contaminant. The stimulatory effect most likely results from the nanoparticles promoting the establishment of interspecies electron transfer (IET) processes between non-dechlorinating and dechlorinating microorganisms.

Magnetite nanoparticles as a kinetically favorable source of iron to enhance GBM response to chemoradiosensitization with pharmacological ascorbate.

Ferumoxytol (FMX) is an FDA-approved magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticle used to treat iron deficiency anemia that can also be used as an MR imaging agent in patients that can't receive gadolinium. Pharmacological ascorbate (P-AscH-; IV delivery; plasma levels ≈ 20 mM) has shown promise as an adjuvant to standard of care chemo-radiotherapy in glioblastoma (GBM). Since ascorbate toxicity mediated by H2O2 is enhanced by Fe redox cycling, the current study determined if ascorbate catalyzed the release of ferrous iron (Fe2+) from FMX for enhancing GBM responses to chemo-radiotherapy. Ascorbate interact

Reusable Magnetite Nanoparticle (Fe3O4 NP) Catalyst for Selective Oxidation of Alcohols under Microwave Irradiation.

Iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) are nontoxic and abundant materials which have long been investigated as reusable catalysts in oxidation reactions, but their use so far has been hampered by a low selectivity. Here, unsupported iron oxide NPs have been found to successfully catalyze the microwave-assisted oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols to their respective aldehydes and ketones with a high selectivity when N-methylmorpholine N-oxide was used as the terminal oxidant. The crystalline phase and size of the iron-based catalyst have a drastic effect on its activity, with small magnetite (

Urokinase-Conjugated Magnetite Nanoparticles as a Promising Drug Delivery System for Targeted Thrombolysis: Synthesis and Preclinical Evaluation.

Mortality and disabilities as outcomes of cardiovascular diseases are primarily related to blood clotting. Optimization of thrombolytic drugs is aimed at the prevention of side effects (in particular, bleeding) associated with a disbalance between coagulation and anticoagulation caused by systemically administered agents. Minimally invasive and efficient approaches to deliver the thrombolytic agent to the site of clot formation are needed. Herein, we report a novel nanocomposite prepared by heparin-mediated cross-linking of urokinase with magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs@uPA). We showed that hepa

Thiol-functionalised mesoporous silica-coated magnetite nanoparticles for high efficiency removal and recovery of Hg from water.

The preparation and testing of thiol-functionalised silica-coated magnetite nanoparticles (TF-SCMNPs) is described. The characteristics of these particles are assessed at different stages in the production process using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and a magnetometer. The particles were found to be almost spherical with a uniform mesoporous structure with a pore size of ∼2.1nm. The particles were strongly responsive to an external magnetic field making separation from solution possible in less than 1min. The ad

Magnetic and pH-responsive magnetite/chitosan (core/shell) nanoparticles for dual-targeted methotrexate delivery in cancer therapy.

Methotrexate successful therapy encounters various challenges in chemotherapy, such as poor oral bioavailability, low specificity, side effects and the development of drug resistances. In this study, it is proposed a dual-targeted nanocarrier comprising magnetite/chitosan nanoparticles for an efficient Methotrexate delivery. The formation of the particles was confirmed through morphological analysis using electron microscopy and elemental mappings via energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. These nanoparticles exhibited a size of ≈ 270 nm, a zeta potential of ≈ 24 mV, and magnetic responsiveness

Direct Polyphenol Attachment on the Surfaces of Magnetite Nanoparticles, Using Vitis vinifera, Vaccinium corymbosum, or Punica granatum.

This study presents an alternative approach to directly synthesizing magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) in the presence of Vitis vinifera, Vaccinium corymbosum, and Punica granatum derived from natural sources (grapes, blueberries, and pomegranates, respectively). A modified co-precipitation method that combines phytochemical techniques was developed to produce semispherical MNPs that range in size from 7.7 to 8.8 nm and are coated with a ~1.5 nm thick layer of polyphenols. The observed structure, composition, and surface properties of the MNPs@polyphenols demonstrated the dual functionality of th

Folic acid-decorated PEGylated magnetite nanoparticles as efficient drug carriers to tumor cells overexpressing folic acid receptor.

The improved drug delivery systems (DDS) are needed for the targeted delivery of their therapeutic cargo (biologically active protein/peptide molecules, nucleic acids, vaccines, etc.) to diseased cells. Thus, we aimed to develop magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4), stabilized with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and decorated (surface-functionalized) with folic acid (FA) (Fe3O4@PEG@FA) to ensure targeted internalization in cells expressing the folic acid receptors (FR). The Fe3O4@PEG@FA nanoparticles were synthesized by co-precipitation in a one-pot methodology. Curcumin (Curc), a polyphenol with anti-t

Fluorescent detection of dipicolinic acid as a biomarker in bacterial spores employing terbium ion-coordinated magnetite nanoparticles.

Anthrax is a bioterror agent because of its toxicity and the tolerance of its bacterial spores. Thus, researchers have attempted to develop various nanomaterials to detect dipicolinic acid (DPA), a biomarker of bacterial spores. Nanomaterials containing lanthanide ions have received considerable attention, owing to their potential to exhibit high sensitivity and selectivity in the detection of DPA via chelation with molecules. However, the fluorescent signals of the lanthanide complex are quenchable because the nanomaterials simultaneously absorb the excitation and emission light. For the prec

Dimercaptosuccinic acid-coated magnetite nanoparticles for magnetically guided in vivo delivery of interferon gamma for cancer immunotherapy.

As radio- and chemotherapy-based cancer treatments affect both tumors and healthy tissue, cancer immunotherapy attempts to specifically enhance the natural immune response to tumor cells. In mouse models of cancer, we tested uniform dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA)-coated monodisperse magnetic nanoparticles as a delivery system for the anti-tumorigenic cytokine IFN-γ. IFN-γ-adsorbed DMSA-coated magnetic nanoparticles were targeted to the tumor site by application of an external magnetic field. We analyzed nanoparticle biodistribution before and after IFN-γ conjugation, as well as the efficiency

Green Synthesis of Hydrophobic Magnetite Nanoparticles Coated with Plant Extract and Their Application as Petroleum Oil Spill Collectors.

In this study, an easy, rapid and eco-friendly method was used successfully to synthesize the magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs). In order to fine-tune the synthesized MNPs for the collection of heavy crude oil spills, the particles' surface was modified with green hydrophobic biocomponents that were extracted from Anthemis pseudocotula (AP). The surface modified reaction carried with that of the MNPs in the presence of n-hexane extract (APH) resulted in the formation of APH-MNPs, while in the presence of chloroform extract (APC), resulted in APC-MNPs formation. The as-formed MNPs were thoroughly
