Sleep Oscillations Across Cortical, Subcortical and Cerebellar Structures in Magnetoencephalography.

Sleep involves widespread changes in neural activity, with distinctive oscillatory patterns emerging across frequency bands and brain regions. Characterising these dynamics is essential for understanding their functional roles in health and their disruption in sleep-related disorders. However, most work on healthy humans has used techniques with limited temporal or spatial resolution, focusing mainly on the cerebral cortex. Growing evidence suggests that subcortical and cerebellar structures contribute to sleep dynamics, yet these regions remain largely unexplored in human neuroimaging due to

Visual Working Memory in Pediatric Epilepsy using Magnetoencephalography: Pilot Study.

Pediatric epilepsy is known to impair behavior, cognition, and learning, particularly affecting working memory (WM). While many aspects of verbal WM have been studied in pediatric epilepsy, little is known about visuospatial working memory (VSWM). VSWM is crucial for spatial navigation, object recognition, and early literacy skills, aiding children in recalling shapes, colors, positions, and movements. Magnetoen-cephalography (MEG), a non-invasive neuroimaging technique with high temporal resolution, provides direct insight into the neural disruptions of VSWM. To investigate this, we measured

Generating diagnostic profiles of cognitive decline and dementia using magnetoencephalography.

Accurate identification of the underlying cause(s) of cognitive decline and dementia is challenging due to significant symptomatic overlap between subtypes. This study presents a multi-class classification framework for subjects with subjective cognitive decline, mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, fronto-temporal dementia and cognitive decline due to psychiatric illness, trained on source-localized resting-state magnetoencephalography data. Diagnostic profiles, describing probability estimates for each of the 6 diagnoses, were assigned to individual subj

Cortical oscillatory dysrhythmias in visual snow syndrome: a magnetoencephalography study.

Visual snow refers to the persistent visual experience of static in the whole visual field of both eyes. It is often reported by patients with migraine and co-occurs with conditions such as tinnitus and tremor. The underlying pathophysiology of the condition is poorly understood. Previously, we hypothesized that visual snow syndrome may be characterized by disruptions to rhythmical activity within the visual system. To test this, data from 18 patients diagnosed with visual snow syndrome, and 16 matched controls, were acquired using magnetoencephalography. Participants were presented with visua

Magnetoencephalography for Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are leading causes of sustained physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral deficits in the general population, active-duty military personnel, and veterans. However, the underlying pathophysiology of mTBI/PTSD and the mechanisms that support functional recovery for some, but not all individuals is not fully understood. Conventional MR imaging and computed tomography are generally negative in mTBI and PTSD, so there is interest in the development of alternative evaluative strategies. Of particular note are magnetoen

Low frequency overactivation in dyslexia: Evidence from resting state Magnetoencephalography.

In this study, we compared the brain activation profiles obtained from resting state Magnetoencephalographic (MEG) activity in 15 dyslexic patients with the profiles of 15 normal controls, using power spectral density (PSD) analysis. We first estimated intracranial dipolar MEG sources on a dense grid on the cortical surface and then projected these sources on a standardized atlas with 68 regions of interest (ROIs). Averaging the PSD values of all sources in each ROI across all control subjects resulted in a normative database that was used to convert the PSD values of dyslexic patients into z-

Functional connectivity measured with magnetoencephalography identifies persons with HIV disease.

There is need for a valid and reliable biomarker for HIV Associated Neurocognitive Disorder (HAND). The purpose of the present study was to provide preliminary evidence of the potential utility of neuronal functional connectivity measures obtained using magnetoencephalography (MEG) to identify HIV-associated changes in brain function. Resting state, eyes closed, MEG data from 10 HIV-infected individuals and 8 seronegative controls were analyzed using mutual information (MI) between all pairs of MEG sensors to determine whether there were functional brain networks that distinguished between sub

Magnetoencephalography of frontotemporal dementia: spatiotemporally localized changes during semantic decisions.

Behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia is a neurodegenerative disorder with dysfunction and atrophy of the frontal lobes leading to changes in personality, behaviour, empathy, social conduct and insight, with relative preservation of language and memory. As novel treatments begin to emerge, biomarkers of frontotemporal dementia will become increasingly important, including functionally relevant neuroimaging indices of the neurophysiological basis of cognition. We used magnetoencephalography to examine behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia using a semantic decision task that elicits

[Specific language disorders: their diagnosis, classification and study using magnetoencephalography].

INTRODUCTION: Specific language disorder (SLD) is defined as a disorder in which language is slow and retarded with respect to the patient's chronological age, and which is not related to a sensory-auditory or motor deficit or to a pervasive development disorder; in other words, structural and functional neurological developmental disorders must be excluded. After many studies and attempts to reach an agreement, specific language disorders have been broadly classified into two groups: specific expressive language disorder and specific receptive-expressive language disorder. The neurophysiology of closed-loop auditory stimulation in sleep: A magnetoencephalography study.

Closed-loop auditory stimulation (CLAS) is a brain modulation technique in which sounds are timed to enhance or disrupt endogenous neurophysiological events. CLAS of slow oscillation up-states in sleep is becoming a popular tool to study and enhance sleep's functions, as it increases slow oscillations, evokes sleep spindles and enhances memory consolidation of certain tasks. However, few studies have examined the specific neurophysiological mechanisms involved in CLAS, in part because of practical limitations to available tools. To evaluate evidence for possible models of how sound stimulation

A review of magnetoencephalography use in pediatric epilepsy: an update on best practice.

Introduction: Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a noninvasive technique that is used for presurgical evaluation of children with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE).Areas covered: The contributions of MEG for localizing the epileptogenic zone are discussed, in particular in extra-temporal lobe epilepsy and focal cortical dysplasia, which are common in children, as well as in difficult to localize epilepsy such as operculo-insular epilepsy. Further, the authors review current evidence on MEG for mapping eloquent cortex, its performance, application in clinical practice, and potential challenges.Expert

Cortical magnetoencephalography of deep brain stimulation for the treatment of postural tremor.

The effects of deep brain stimulation (DBS) on motor cortex circuitry in Essential tremor (ET) and Parkinson's disease (PD) patients are not well understood, in part, because most imaging modalities have difficulty capturing and localizing motor cortex dynamics on the same temporal scale as motor symptom expression. Here, we report on the use of magnetoencephalography (MEG) to characterize sources of postural tremor activity within the brain of an ET/PD patient and the effects of bilateral subthalamic nucleus DBS on these sources. Recordings were performed during unilateral and bilateral DBS a

Synchronized brain network associated with essential tremor as revealed by magnetoencephalography.

Despite the fact that essential tremor (ET) is the most prevalent movement disorder, the underlying pathological mechanisms are not fully understood. There is accumulating evidence that this specific type of tremor is mainly of central origin, in particular involving inferior olive, cerebellum, thalamus, and primary motor cortex. We studied 8 patients with ET recording simultaneously neural activity with a whole-scalp neuromagnetometer and tremor activity with surface electromyography (EMG). Subjects performed an isometric contraction of the left forearm. Tremor frequency of 5 to 7 Hz and its

[Use of magnetoencephalography and functional neuronavigation in planning and surgery of brain tumors].

The role of magnetoencephalography (MEG) in neurology has been established for basic research, epilepsy, and functional brain mapping. The presurgical localization of functionally important brain areas has evolved as an important application of MEG. Both neurologists and neurosurgeons can use this method for decision-making and planning of nonsurgical or surgical treatment in brain tumors. The integration of functional brain mapping data into neuronavigation systems may help to minimize postoperative morbidity. This is especially important in low-grade gliomas, in which a potential benefit of

Individual cases of Parkinson's disease can be robustly classified using magnetoencephalography.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that causes debilitating symptoms in both the motor and cognitive domains. The neurophysiological markers of PD include 'oscillopathies' such as diffuse neural oscillatory slowing, dysregulated beta band activity, and changes in interhemispheric functional connectivity; however, the relative importance of these markers as determinants of disease status is unclear. In this case-control study, we used resting state magnetoencephalography (MEG) data (n = 199 participants, 78 PD, 121 controls) from the OMEGA repository to investi

Dynamics of brain connectivity across the Alzheimer's disease spectrum through magnetoencephalography.

Changes in static functional connectivity have been extensively linked to Alzheimer's Disease (AD), however, dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) across the AD continuum remains understudied. The current investigation leverages the high temporal resolution of MEG to dissect the dynamics of brain connectivity alterations across various stages of AD and their association with cognitive decline and structural brain changes. 321 participants were included, categorized into healthy control, subjective cognitive decline (SCD), and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) groups. Analysis of magnetoencephalography recordings from Alzheimer's disease patients using embedding entropies.

The aim of this study was to examine the magnetoencephalography (MEG) background activity in Alzheimer's disease (AD) using three embedding entropies: approximate entropy (ApEn), sample entropy (SampEn), and fuzzy entropy (FuzzyEn). These three methods measure the time series regularity. Five minutes of recording were acquired with a 148-channel whole-head magnetometer from 36 AD patients and 24 elderly control subjects. Our results showed that MEG activity was more regular in AD patients than in controls. Additionally, FuzzyEn revealed statistically significant differences between the two gro
