Visceral leishmaniasis in Malta--an 18 year paediatric, population based study.

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a chronic parasitic infection that infects approximately 400,000 individuals annually, with a predilection towards early childhood. AIMS: To study the epidemiology of VL in childhood. METHODS: VL is endemic in Malta, a small archipelago of islands in the centre of the Mediterranean with a total population approaching half a million. Notification of human cases of leishmaniasis is compulsory. Case records of all 81 paediatric patients with VL between 1980 and 1998 were analysed. RESULTS: The annual incidence of VL declined for all cases of VL, and d

Hip Fractures in Malta: Does Delay in Surgery Affect Clinical Outcomes?

INTRODUCTION: Hip fractures are common and are a major cause of significant morbidity and mortality in the elderly population, particularly when treatment is delayed. The British Orthopaedic Association's (BOA) guidelines state that surgical treatment should be performed within 36 hours of admission. This study aimed to investigate the effects of delays in surgery on clinical outcomes and to evaluate mortality rates over a three-year follow-up period following proximal femoral fractures. METHODOLOGY: This was a single-center, retrospective observational study of all patients aged ≥60 years ad

Rare gynaecological cancers in Malta - An analysis of incidence between 2010 and 2021.

INTRODUCTION: Whilst about 18 % of all cancers in females are gynaecological cancers, more than 50 % of these can be classified as rare tumours (defined as an annual incidence of <6 per 100,000). Such cancers represent an important challenge for small countries like Malta where the small caseload may limit the expertise of clinicians in the diagnosis and treatment of such cancers. METHODOLOGY: The study uses data from the Maltese population-based cancer registry to examine trends in incidence rate of the rare gynaecological cancers for the 12-year period between 2010 and 2021. It employs the

The First Patient with Tinea Manuum because of Trichophyton erinacei Isolated in Malta.

A 39-year-old woman presented to the dermatology department in January 2022 with a 3-week history of a progressively enlarging and intensely pruritic erythematous annular nodule on her left hand. The lesion started as a small blister, which was initially presumed to be a flare up of her pompholyx dermatitis. On her physician's advice, she applied clobetasol propionate ointment twice daily for 5 days; however the blister continued to increase in size until it burst, revealing raw inflamed skin. As the patch continued to increase in size, she was prescribed oral ciprofloxacin 500 mg twice a day

Abortion and methods of reproductive planning: the views of Malta's medical doctor cohort.

Malta is the only EU country where abortion remains illegal in all circumstances. This study aims to assess the previously unexplored views of Malta's medical doctors on the legality of contraception, abortion, assisted reproductive technology and surrogacy. Following ethics approval, 1578 out of a total of 2468 registered medical doctors in Malta were invited for an anonymous survey. The response rate was 28.8% (n = 454), guaranteeing a maximum margin of error of 4.16% assuming a 95% confidence level. Responses consisted of "Yes", "No", and "Not sure". In the abortion section, "Yes" responses

Characterisation of MRSA from Malta and the description of a Maltese epidemic MRSA strain.

Malta has one of the highest prevalence rates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in Europe. However, only limited typing data are currently available. In order to address this situation, 45 MRSA isolates from the Mater Dei Hospital in Msida, Malta, were characterised using DNA microarrays. The most common strain was ST22-MRSA-IV (UK-EMRSA-15, 30 isolates). Sporadic strains included ST36-MRSA-II (UK-EMRSA-16, two isolates), PVL-positive ST80-MRSA-IV (European Clone, one isolate), ST228-MRSA-I (Italian Clone/South German Epidemic Strain, one isolate) and ST239-MRSA-III (Vienna

One or two: an examination of the recent case of the conjoined twins from Malta.

The article questions the assumption that conjoined twins are necessarily two people or persons by employing arguments based on different points of view: non-personal vitalism, the person as a sentient being, the person as an agent, the person as a locus of narrative and valuation, and the person as an embodied mind. Analogies employed from the cases of amputation, multiple personality disorder, abortion, split-brain patients and cloning. The article further questions the assumption that a conjoined twin's natural interest and wish is separation. I first contend that separation is such a radic

Assisted reproductive technology and multiple pregnancy in Malta - A population based study.

INTRODUCTION: Assisted reproductive technology (ART) is increasingly used to overcome growing rates of infertility and subfertility. Perinatal and maternal morbidity and mortality are elevated in ART conceptions even in vaginally delivered singletons. Malta is a small archipelago with comprehensive national data. This study was carried out in order to investigate ART rates in Maltese deliveries for 2000-2019 inclusive. METHODS: Anonymous data was obtained from the Malta National Obstetric Information System (NOIS). For this study all ART methods were aggregated into one group. Deliveries refe

Trends in presentation of congenital heart disease in a population-based study in Malta.

Differing pathological haemodynamics in cardiac malformations lead to varying modes and timings of presentation. This study identifies historical trends in presentation of congenital heart disease in a population-based study. All patients diagnosed as having congenital heart disease in Malta between 1960-1994 were included (n = 868). Analysis was carried out on trends in referral sources, modes of presentation and birth prevalence. The number of patients diagnosed with congenital heart disease increased over the period under study. For both patients not requiring intervention (n = 283) and tho

The Care of Deeply Significant Insignificant Things: An Ethnographic Study of Palliative Care in Malta.

In Malta, palliative care is often seen by nurses, policymakers and others as care of doing nothing. In my study, I demonstrate how nurses working in a palliative care unit attend to what, in the Maltese language, are called ċuċati: seemingly trivial acts that, even within palliative care, are often not recognized as legitimate forms of care, yet have a profound effect on patients' well-being. In this article, I highlight a paradoxical relationship between the ċuċati and formal recognition. Formal recognition, while providing a means to legitimization, also risks depersonalizing the ċuċati, po

Elucidating managerial, staff and client perspectives on the Speech and Language Therapy service in Malta.

BACKGROUND: Speech and language therapy (SLT) services are fundamental for communication, academic and social development. Evidence shows that demand for services is increasing, and this can adversely affect the quality of care. There are limited published studies in relation to the demand and quality of speech and language services in Malta. AIMS: To elucidate the perspectives of speech-language pathologists (SLPs), service managers and parents of clients about the impact of factors pertaining to human resource development (HRD), human resource management (HRM) and the environment on the qua

Incidence of inflammatory bowel disease in Malta between 1993 and 2005: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The primary aim of the study was to estimate the incidence of Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), collectively known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), in Malta in a well-defined population during a 13-year study period. METHODS: Diagnostic criteria for CD and UC were defined. A diagnosis of IBD was obtained from the histopathology reports at St. Luke's Hospital, Malta, between January 1993 and December 2005. The date of diagnosis was defined as the date of the first histopathology report revealing signs of IBD. RESULTS: Incidence rates were standardized using the

Adverse reactions to Pfizer-BioNTech vaccination of healthcare workers at Malta's state hospital.

BACKGROUND: The long-term control of COVID-19 depends on an effective global vaccination strategy. Protecting healthcare workers (HCWs) from serious infection is critical. Malta, a European country, initiated the vaccination roll-out using Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine targeting HCWs. This study determined vaccination adverse effects (AEs) in this cohort. METHOD: An online survey was disseminated to all HCWs via work email (29/3/21 to 9/4/21) to gather AEs regarding pain, redness and swelling at injection site, fever, chills, fatigue, muscle/joint pains, headache, vomiting and diarrhoea se
