Brain computer interfaces, a review.

A brain-computer interface (BCI) is a hardware and software communications system that permits cerebral activity alone to control computers or external devices. The immediate goal of BCI research is to provide communications capabilities to severely disabled people who are totally paralyzed or 'locked in' by neurological neuromuscular disorders, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, brain stem stroke, or spinal cord injury. Here, we review the state-of-the-art of BCIs, looking at the different steps that form a standard BCI: signal acquisition, preprocessing or signal enhancement, feature ext

With a Little Help From My Car: Sharing Automated Vehicle's Situation Awareness Reduces Driver-Initiated Automation Disengagement Without Delaying Takeover Response Time.

ObjectiveThis study investigated the effect of sharing vehicle situation awareness (VSA) on driver takeover behavior in complex urban environments.BackgroundAs automated vehicles (AV) expand their operational design domain, little is known about driver interactions with driving automation in complex urban settings. Drivers often become either overly reliant on automation or fail to rely on it even when capable, leading to misuse or disuse. Sharing VSA information could enhance drivers' awareness of the AV system and response when AVs request manual control in complex situations.MethodsA drivin

Providing training enhances the biomechanical improvements of an alternative computer mouse design.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to determine if an alternative mouse promotes more neutral postures and decreases forearm muscle activity and if training enhances these biomechanical benefits. BACKGROUND: Computer mouse use is a risk factor for developing musculoskeletal disorders; alternative mouse designs can help lower these risks. Ergonomic training combined with alternative input devices could be even more effective than alternative designs alone. METHODS: Thirty healthy adults (15 males, 15 females) performed a set of computer mouse tasks with a standard mouse and an alternativ

Automated vehicle's human-machine interfaces design with haptic feedback: A meta-analysis.

Automated vehicles (AVs) enable drivers to engage in non-driving-related tasks (NDRTs), creating challenges for safe transitions of control. Haptic feedback has been proposed as an effective takeover request (TOR) modality, yet evidence regarding feedback location and task context remains fragmented. This meta-analysis synthesizes results from 19 empirical studies to examine the effects of haptic feedback on drivers' response times during TORs. Comparisons were made between haptic, visual, auditory, and multimodal feedback, with moderation analyses considering feedback location and sensory-con

Effect of rear suspension and speed on seat forces and head accelerations experienced by manual wheelchair riders with spinal cord injury.

Whole-body shocks and vibrations experienced during manual wheelchair use can decrease an individual's comfort, increase the rate of fatigue, result in injury, and consequently limit mobility and community participation. We used a wheelchair-vibration simulator to examine whether the seat reaction forces experienced by wheelchair users were differentially influenced by wheelchair suspension, trunk-muscle innervations, and ground speed. We used wheelchairs instrumented with load cells and accelerometers to determine the forces transmitted from the seat frame and the head accelerations experienc

Gait analysis with an integrated system for functional assessment of talocalcaneal coalition.

There is little knowledge of the functional performance of patients with talocalcaneal coalition because of the marginal quantitative information accessible using current motion-analysis and plantar pressure-measurement techniques. A novel system was developed for comprehensively measuring foot-floor interaction during the stance phase of gait that integrates instrumentation for simultaneously measuring bony segment position, ground reaction force, and plantar pressure with synchronization of spatial and temporal variables. An advanced anatomically based analysis of foot joint rotations was al

[Consequences of presbyopia for the dynamics of sight and work at a terminal].

For 100 persons of different age the visual charge for the accommodation was examined by an objective procedure. Already at the age of 40 the dynamic range of accommodation decreases. This decrease could be a reason for the loss of mobility during work at VDUs, as it has been observed in a group of persons aged 40 to 55 years.

Real-Time "Eye-Writing" Recognition Using Electrooculogram.

Eye movements can be used as alternative inputs for human-computer interface (HCI) systems such as virtual or augmented reality systems as well as new communication ways for patients with locked-in syndrome. In this study, we developed a real-time electrooculogram (EOG)-based eye-writing recognition system, with which users can write predefined symbolic patterns with their volitional eye movements. For the "eye-writing" recognition, the proposed system first reconstructs the eye-written traces from EOG waveforms in real-time; then, the system recognizes the intended symbolic inputs with a reli

Human-cobot collaboration's impact on success, time completion, errors, workload, gestures and acceptability during an assembly task.

The 5.0 industry promotes collaborative robots (cobots). This research studies the impacts of cobot collaboration using an experimental setup. 120 participants realized a simple and a complex assembly task. 50% collaborated with another human (H/H) and 50% with a cobot (H/C). The workload and the acceptability of the cobotic collaboration were measured. Working with a cobot decreases the effect of the task complexity on the human workload and on the output quality. However, it increases the time completion and the number of gestures (while decreasing their frequency). The H/C couples have a hi

Automation Expectation Mismatch: Incorrect Prediction Despite Eyes on Threat and Hands on Wheel.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to understand how to secure driver supervision engagement and conflict intervention performance while using highly reliable (but not perfect) automation. BACKGROUND: Securing driver engagement-by mitigating irony of automation (i.e., the better the automation, the less attention drivers will pay to traffic and the system, and the less capable they will be to resume control) and by communicating system limitations to avoid mental model misconceptions-is a major challenge in the human factors literature. METHOD: One hundred six drivers participated in three

EEG Analysis During Active and Assisted Repetitive Movements: Evidence for Differences in Neural Engagement.

Two key ingredients of a successful neuro-rehabilitative intervention have been identified as intensive and repetitive training and subject's active participation, which can be coupled in an active robot-assisted training. To exploit these two elements, we recorded electroencephalography, electromyography and kinematics signals from nine healthy subjects performing a 2×2 factorial design protocol, with subject's volitional intention and robotic glove assistance as factors. We quantitatively evaluated primary sensorimotor, premotor and supplementary motor areas activation during movement execut

Comparing on-line continuous movement decoding with joints unconstrained and constrained based on a generic musculoskeletal model.

Human-machine interface (HMI) has been extensively developed and applied in rehabilitation. However, the performance of amputees on continuous movement decoding was significantly decreased compared with that of able-bodied individuals. To explore the impact of the absence of joint movements on the performance of HMI in rehabilitation, a generic musculoskeletal model (MM) was employed in this study to evaluate and compare the performance of subjects completing a series of on-line tasks with the wrist and metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints unconstrained and constrained. The performance of the gene

Biomechanical analysis on neurotypical and autism spectrum disorder people during human-cobot interaction.

Biomechanical analysis is essential for assessing subjects interacting with robotic setups and platforms. However, in industrial scenarios, workers' biomechanics are assessed mainly through questionnaires and scales which provide limited objectivity. Very few studies analyzed the biomechanics of workers in multiple sessions, and no study assessed diverse populations of workers. Therefore, we collected tracking data from 14 neurotypical and 7 participants with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) performing assembly tasks in a lab-based industrial collaborative workcell. Human tracking data were acqu

Motorcycling freedom: a paraplegics dream.

People with disabilities have the same rights as other members of society in directing and implementing the decisions which affect their lives, although it is not always afforded them due to physical limitations. A chance encounter by the author, a University of Western Australia mechanical engineering student, with a paraplegic man who expressed his dream of being able to ride a motorcycle again led to the design and build of a specially modified motorcycle that could be ridden safely and comfortably by a person without the use of their legs. The prototype involved several modifications which
