Management of congenital talipes equino varus in Scotland: a nationwide audit.

The Scottish Talipes Register is a record of all newly diagnosed cases of idiopathic congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) in Scotland over a four.year period. Two hundred and sixteen children were entered into the register, which recorded initial management and all subsequent interventions, both non-operative and operative. The data, therefore, represent a record of the different management regimens used within Scotland highlighting the variations in duration of conservative management and variations in surgical intervention following different methods of conservative management.

Furlow Palatoplasty for Velopharyngeal Dysfunction Management: Auditing and Predicting Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: The Furlow palatoplasty is a proven procedure in the management of secondary velopharyngeal dysfunction in patients with cleft palate. But the selection of cases, the degree of clinical success, and the preoperative predictors of the same are less established. This study is an effort to retrospectively look at outcomes, in a large series of velopharyngeal dysfunction cases treated with the Furlow palatoplasty alone. DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of preoperative and postoperative speech and videofluoroscopic data. SETTING: Tertiary care center. PATIENTS/PARTICIPANTS: Ninety-two p

Audit of the management of early syphilis at North Manchester General Hospital.

The city of Manchester has seen a sustained increase in reported cases of early (infectious) syphilis since the late 1990s. We audited the management of patients presenting with early syphilis to North Manchester General Hospital, with reference to the UK national guidelines. Between January 1999 and December 2001 72 cases of early syphilis were identified. Most (90%) occurred in men who have sex with men, 50% of whom were HIV-positive. Serology and polymerase chain reaction testing of lesions were useful diagnostic tests. Treatment regimens followed the national guidelines in 63% of cases, wi

An audit of the management of the acute scrotum in children with Henoch-Schonlein Purpura.

Many children with Henoch-Schonlein anaphylactoid purpura syndrome (HSAPS) who develop an acute scrotum have scrotal explorations to exclude torsion of the spermatic cord. However, the cause of the acute scrotum in the context of HSAPS is known to be vasculitis and not torsion. The aim of this study, therefore, was to identify factors that underlie this practice. In a 10-year retrospective study of male patients admitted to a Children's Hospital with a diagnosis of HSAPS, 22 out of the 93 children identified (22/93 = 24%) had scrotal involvement. Three children (3/22 = 14%) were investigated r

SURF - SUrvey of Risk Factor management: first report of an international audit.

BACKGROUND: Despite the fact that subjects with established coronary heart disease (CHD) are at high risk of further events and deserve meticulous secondary prevention, current audits such as EUROASPIRE show poor control of major risk factors. Ongoing monitoring is required. We present a new risk factor audit system, SURF (Survey of Risk Factor management), that can be conducted much more quickly and easily than existing audit systems and has the potential to allow hospitals of all sizes to participate in a unified international audit system that will complement EUROASPIRE. National audit of continence care for older people: management of faecal incontinence.

INTRODUCTION: Faecal incontinence in older people is associated with considerable morbidity but is amenable to successful management. Quality standards in this area were previously subject to a pilot audit in primary, secondary care and care homes to allow providers to compare the care delivered by their service to others and to monitor the development of integrated continence services as set out in the National Service Framework for Older People. This study reports the results of the national audit. RESULTS: Data were returned by 141 primary care sites, 159 secondary care trusts (involving 1
