BACKGROUND: Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca, is one of the obligatory religious duties of Islam. The travel clinic of the Public Health Service (PHS) Amsterdam administers vaccinations, including the required meningitis ACYW135 vaccine, and provides travelers with individual recommendations for all their travels.
METHODS: We extracted all data from the PHS database pertaining to Muslims who visited the clinic before travel to Mecca. From 2001 to 2009, the characteristics are described and trends are analyzed retrospectively. Acceptance of dTP vaccine was used as a proxy for acceptance of recomm

BACKGROUND: Measles resurgence across Europe has renewed attention to immunity gaps in healthcare environments. Following decades of sub-optimal coverage, Italy implemented mandatory vaccination under Law 119/2017 to counteract declining rates. However, young adults entering medical training represent a transitional cohort with heterogeneous exposures to natural infection versus vaccination. This study evaluated the evolution of measles immunity among medical students and healthcare trainees, assessing the impact of vaccination policies and the operational efficacy of an on-site catch-up vacci

Japan is one of the few rabies-free countries/territories which implement the policy of mandatory vaccination of domestic dogs. In order to assess the economic efficiency of such policy in reducing the economic burden of a future canine rabies outbreak in Japan, a benefit-cost analysis (BCA) was performed using probabilistic decision tree modelling. Input data derived from simulation results of published mathematical model, field investigation conducted by the authors at prefectural governments, literature review, international or Japanese database and empirical data of rabies outbreaks in oth

We examined variation in attitude toward mandatory COVID-19 vaccination in early life by sociodemographic characteristics, personal COVID-19 experience, health risk attitude, political ideology, and other COVID-19 vaccine mandate attitudes. For this purpose, we used data from 19 928 participants from 16 countries surveyed in March-November 2022 for the second wave of the COVID-19 vaccine preference and opinion survey (CANDOUR). Analyses were adjusted for poststratification weighting. Participants who disagreed with early life mandatory COVID-19 vaccination were more likely to decline vaccinati

Influenza and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) are respiratory pathogens which significantly impact healthcare systems. Seasonal vaccination is recommended for all healthcare workers (HCWs) to reduce the risk for both operators and patients. Puglia, a region in Southern Italy, has been enforcing since 2018 a law mandating influenza vaccination in healthcare workers. However, vaccination coverages for this category have always been suboptimal. Our study tests the effectiveness of an active recall intervention on vaccination coverage for influenza and SARS-CoV-2 in th

In a context of recently decreasing childhood immunization coverage and low uptake of COVID-19 vaccines in Bulgaria, this study measures vaccine hesitancy among general practitioners (GPs) in the country, as they are central to forming patients' attitudes. In 2022, a face-to-face survey was conducted through a simple random sample from an exhaustive national database of Bulgarian GPs. This study measured attitudes on vaccine importance, safety, and effectiveness, and attitudes toward the Bulgarian immunization schedule. Information was collected on demographic and GP practice characteristics a

BACKGROUND: The role of vaccination in reducing the incidence, morbidity and mortality of vaccine preventable diseases is well-known; however, vaccination uptake for some vaccine-preventable diseases remains low among Italian healthcare workers. The aim of this study was to evaluate knowledge attitudes and practice regarding mandatory vaccinations among Italian health science university students.
METHODS: A multi-center study was conducted in 14 Italian universities. A standardized, previously validated and anonymous questionnaire consisting of 21 questions was administered to health science

BACKGROUND: Healthcare worker (HCW) vaccination against seasonal influenza is considered a key preventative measure within hospitals and aged-care facilities (ACFs) to reduce the risk of transmission and related disease. Despite this, many facilities experience persistently low vaccination coverage rates and mandatory vaccination has been explored as a potential strategy to improve coverage. This study explored the current climate around staff vaccination in Australia from the perspective of opinion leaders and key stakeholders.
METHODS: Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted b

Systematic mandatory immunization of children against tetanus was started in Italy in 1968. Prevalence of tetanus hyperimmunization (> 5 IU/ml) was assessed among 214 immune subjects born after 1968 and found to be 17.3%. This figure is significantly higher (p < 0.01) than the 10.8% found in a previous study of subjects born before 1968. This increase is statistically significant in the Center (p < 0.01) and in the South (p < 0.05) of Italy, but not in the North. Hyperimmunization is not associated with family size (odds ratio 2.16; C. I. 95% = 0.5-7.6) or the father's years of education (odds

BACKGROUND: Vaccination of healthcare workers (HCW) aims to protect them and to reduce transmission to susceptible patients. Influenza, measles, pertussis, and varicella vaccinations are recommended but not mandatory for HCW in France. Insufficient vaccine coverage for these diseases in HCW has raised the question of introducing mandatory vaccination. We conducted a survey to estimate acceptability of mandatory vaccination for these four vaccines by HCW working in healthcare facilities (HCF) in France, and to identify associated determinants.
METHODS: In 2019, we performed a cross-sectional s

AIM: To evaluate the uptake of a mandatory meningococcal, a highly recommended influenza, and an optional pneumococcal vaccine, and to explore the key factors affecting vaccination rate among health care workers (HCWs) during the Hajj.
METHODS: An anonymous cross-sectional online survey was distributed among HCWs and trainees who worked or volunteered at the Hajj 2015-2017 through their line managers, or by visiting their hospitals and healthcare centres in Makkah and Mina. Overseas HCWs who accompanied the pilgrims or those who work in foreign Hajj medical missions were excluded. Pearson's χ

BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy has increased worldwide, leading to reduction in vaccination coverage rates. In particular, reduction in the coverage for the trivalent Measles-Mumps-Rubella vaccine has led to an increase of measles cases. The aim of this study is to analyze the coverage rates for the MMR vaccine in the Emilia-Romagna Region (RER) and Sicily Region (SR) between 2009 and 2018, and to correlate any significant change to index events which could have modified the trend of vaccination rates.
METHODS: Official aggregate data on vaccination coverage at 24 months provided by the RER an

BACKGROUND: Since 2004 a single varicella vaccination for all infants aged 11-14 months has been recommended in Germany and since 2009 a second dose at the age of 15-23 months is recommended. Vaccination coverage after 24 months rose from 43% in 2006 to 87.5% in 2012. A mandatory notification system was introduced in the New Federal States (NFS) between 2002 and 2009 and nationwide in 2013. A national sentinel system has been in place since 2005.
OBJECTIVE AND METHOD: We analyzed both data sources to describe the varicella epidemiology related to vaccination coverage after initiation of routi

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Vaccinations significantly reduce the incidence of preventable diseases. Despite their benefits, childhood vaccination rates have declined in Italy since the mid-2010s, prompting the government to mandate certain vaccinations. This cross-sectional study aims to assess the intention to vaccinate their children and the perception of mandatory vaccinations among pregnant women in Italy after the COVID-19 pandemic and post-mandatory vaccination policies.
METHODS: Participants over 18 years old recruited from 18 cities in Italy completed a questionnaire covering socio-demogr

The authors present the results of an epidemiological study of SSPE in Poland conducted since 15 years. Since the years covered by the study (1977-1991) included the first period after the introduction of obligatory vaccinations against measles in our country, the most important aim of this analysis was to find out the possible influence of the effect of these vaccinations on SSPE incidence. A comparison of the data obtained in successive stages of the study shows that a slow gradual decrease of the annual incidence of SSPE has been taking place in our country (from at least 1.6 per million be

OBJECTIVES: Currently, there are limited data on the prevalence of HBsAg in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This study aimed to evaluate the trend of HBsAg prevalence during a period of 20 years in relation to the implementation of pre-donation questionnaires based on parenteral and sexual risk factors and mandatory HBV vaccination.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis performed on 67,336 blood donors at the University Clinical Hospital Mostar during three distinct periods: before introducing of mandatory HBV vaccination and pre-donation blood donor questionnaires (1998-2002); after

Conceptually, current definitions of vaccine mandates involve two key elements: the requirement to be vaccinated and sanctions for non-compliance. However, during COVID-19, governments frequently introduced vaccine mandates in contexts where people were already denied access to work, travel, and social activities due to lockdowns and restrictions. This important context disrupts the standard operation of vaccine mandates. Accordingly, this paper explores COVID-19 vaccine mandates in New South Wales (Australia), France, Israel, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam, where mandates primarily served a

Healthcare personnel (HCP) are at occupational risk for acquisition of several vaccine-preventable diseases and transmission to patients. Vaccinations of HCP are justified to confer them immunity but also to protect susceptible patients and healthcare services from outbreaks, HCP absenteeism and presenteeism. Mandatory vaccination policies for HCP are increasingly adopted and achieve high and sustainable vaccination rates in short term. In this article we review the scientific evidence for HCP vaccination. We also address issues pertaining to vaccination policies for HCP and present the challe
