Evaluation of mandibular bone structure using fractal analysis and radiomorphometric indices in pediatric chronic kidney disease.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) can compromise bone quality during growth, yet noninvasive assessment in pediatric patients difficult. This study examined mandibular bone in pediatric CKD using fractal dimension (FD) and radiomorphometric indices (RI) on panoramic radiographs. STUDY DESIGN: 27 pediatric CKD patients and 27 age- and sex-matched controls were evaluated retrospectively. FD was calculated from 3 regions of interest (ROIs) using ImageJ/FracLac. Mandibular cortical width (MCW), panoramic mandibular index (PMI), and superior foraminal distance (SL) were measured. FD was com

Mandibular infarction and sterile subperiosteal fluid collection in patients with sickle cell disease: a report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC) is the primary cause of morbidity and emergency department visits in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) and may lead to acute bone infarction. Infarction most commonly affects the long bones; however, the craniofacial bones may also be involved. AIM/OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this case series was to describe the initial diagnosis and management of acute infarction of the mandible in the setting of sickle cell VOC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This case series included two patients with SCD who developed VOC and acute mandibular infarction with associate

Aggressive Mandibular Squamous Cell Carcinoma Mimicking Periodontal Disease in a Non-Transplanted Patient With Fanconi Anemia.

BACKGROUND: Fanconi anemia (FA) is associated with markedly increased risk for early-onset oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). METHODS: We report an aggressive mandibular squamous cell carcinoma in a 26-year-old non-transplanted woman with FA initially interpreted as localized periodontal disease adjacent to a tongue leukoplakia. RESULTS: Initial examination demonstrated mild gingival inflammation and localized alveolar bone loss involving the right mandibular molars. Forty-five days later, the patient returned with facial asymmetry, severe bone destruction, and grade III tooth mobility. Co

Evaluation of the effect of sickle cell disease on the mandibular bone of children and adolescents by image texture and radiomorphometric analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Sickle cell disease (SCD) can cause osteoporotic changes in the jaw bones. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate possible bone changes using fractal analysis (FA) and morphometric analyses in dental panoramic radiographs of children and adolescents diagnosed with both homozygous and heterozygous forms of SCD. METHODS: Sixty-five individuals (33 SCD, 32 controls) aged 6-17 years were included in the study. Four separate areas of interest (ROI) were selected for the right and left sides of all panoramic radiographs, and the FA value of the ROIs was calculated. Mandibular cortical

TNF Accelerates Death of Mandibular Condyle Chondrocytes in Rats with Biomechanical Stimulation-Induced Temporomandibular Joint Disease.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if temporomandibular joint chondrocyte apoptosis is induced in rats with dental biomechanical stimulation and what a role TNF takes. METHODS: Thirty-two rats were divided into 4 groups (n = 8/group) and exposed to incisor mal-occlusion induced by unilateral anterior crossbite biomechanical stimulation. Two groups were sampled at 2 or 4 weeks. The other two groups were treated with local injections of a TNF inhibitor or PBS into the temporomandibular joints area at 2 weeks and then sampled at 4 weeks. Twenty-four rats either served as unilateral anterior crossbite mock

Mandibular third molar development after mantle radiation in long-term survivors of childhood Hodgkin's disease.

Sequential panoramic radiographs were assessed for mandibular third molar development in 47 long-term survivors of childhood Hodgkin's disease after treatment with 37 Gy mantle field radiation. To make a comparison, panoramic radiographs of 149 healthy, nonirradiated children were reviewed for the presence of mandibular third molars. In children between the ages of 7 and 12 years, bilateral agenesis of mandibular third molars was more frequent in patients who had been treated with mantle radiation than in nonirradiated patients. Unilateral agenesis, crown hypoplasia, and root growth impairment

Tooth Elongation of Maxillary Second Premolars and Mandibular Third Molars and Associated Periodontal Disease in Horses: A Retrospective Study.

Periodontal disease has been identified in horses and donkeys through the millennia at a prevalence of up to 75% and is a leading cause of tooth loss in horses. We hypothesize that there is a correlation between tooth elongations and periodontal disease. Dental records of all client owned horses examined by a single AVDC/equine board certified practitioner in 2016-2018 were analyzed. Inclusion criteria consisted of the examination finding of tooth elongation of one of the following teeth pairs 106/107, 206/207, 310/311, or 410-411. The included cases were then examined for the finding of perio

Case Report: Long-term disease control with immunotherapy in primary mandibular adenoid cystic carcinoma presenting with pulmonary metastasis.

Primary intraosseous adenoid cystic carcinoma (PIACC) of the mandible is an exceptionally rare malignancy. While radical surgery and radiotherapy provide locoregional control, managing distant metastases remains challenging due to the lack of standard systemic therapies and the characteristically "cold" immune microenvironment of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC). We report the case of a 62-year-old male diagnosed with PIACC of the mandible presenting with synchronous bilateral pulmonary metastases (Stage IVC). Following radical resection and adjuvant radiotherapy, the patient received first-line

A Case of Sjögren's Syndrome Associated With Trigeminal Neuropathy and Enhancement of the Mandibular Nerve at the Foramen Ovale: A Case Report and a Review of the Differential Diagnosis and Mechanisms of the Disease.

We describe a case of Sjögren's syndrome-associated trigeminal neuropathy with mandibular nerve enhancement at the foramen ovale and Gasserian ganglion (Meckel's cave) in a patient with a prior history of breast cancer. We also explore the differential diagnosis of trigeminal neuropathy associated with mandibular nerve involvement at the foramen ovale and exclude other diseases such as Sjögren's syndrome or perineurial invasion as a result of various carcinomas. We emphasize the importance of an investigative triad of searching for a local head-and-neck malignancy that may metastasize by perin
