Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is commonly seen malignant epithelial neoplasm of the oral cavity, which is characterized by variable clinical manifestations. It arises from dysplastic squamous epithelium. Majority of the spread of oral SCC (OSCC) to mandibular bone occurs by direct infiltration of the tumour through alveolar ridge or lingual cortical plate. Only 6% of the OSCC present with primary tumour; hence, a comprehensive whole body imaging needs to be done for ruling out primary tumour anywhere else in the body along with a proper clinical examination. Here, we present an unusual case of

Cementoblastoma is a rare neoplasm, representing <1% of all odontogenic tumors. It usually occurs in the posterior mandible and is associated with roots of a mandibular first molar or second premolar. This paper presents a rare case of cementoblastoma in the maxillary posterior region involving the maxillary sinus, in a young female patient. The clinical, radiological, and histopathological features of the lesion are discussed along with a review of previously reported cases in the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Lymphomas are a heterogeneous group of malignant neoplasms of lymphocytes and their precursor cells. Lymphoma is seen 3.5% of all intraoral malignancies and is the second most common neoplasm after the squamous cell carcinoma in the head and neck region. Diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (DLBCL), which is a subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, are seen mostly in the paraoral region.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 82-year-old woman was referred with a localised swelling of the mandibular buccal mucosa for 3 months. Excisional biopsy revealed the diagnosis of DLBCL in the mandible and chemotherap

Growth disturbances of the temporomandibular Joint are characterized by mandibular asymmetry, sometimes with secondary maxillar disturbances. Although the clinical symptoms are sometimes quite severe, patients usually have no pain. There are several growth disturbances, but in this article we discuss three particular causes of facial asymmetry, namely hemimandibular growth defects; overdevelopment, underdevelopment and neoplasms of the mandibular joint. Hemimandibular overdevelopment (hyperplasia) is a growth disorder characterized by progressive asymmetry of the mandibula. Hemimandibular hypo

Peripheral Ameloblastoma (PA) is a benign odontogenic tumor, arising from the cell rest of Serres, reduced enamel epithelium and basal cells of the surface epithelium. Peripheral ameloblastoma is a rare odontogenic neoplasm occurring commonly in the mandibular gingiva. PA clinically resembles other peripherally occurring lesions like pyogenic granuloma, peripheral ossifying fibroma, peripheral giant cell granuloma, and squamous papilloma. The recurrence rate of PA is 16-19% which demands a straight follow up. We report a case of recurrent peripheral ameloblastoma occurring in a 72-year old mal

Central ossifying fibroma is a rare fibro-osseous neoplasm in young children. It is highly aggressive and has a strong tendency to recur. We describe an 11-year-old girl with juvenile central ossifying fibromas of the mandible that caused obstruction of tooth eruption of the lower left second premolar. Oral examination revealed the presence of the primary lower left second molar and a small bony hard swelling over the left side of the mandibular body. After a computed tomographic scan, an incisional biopsy was performed, and the lesion proved to be a juvenile ossifying fibroma. Although this t

A 36-year-old female patient presented with a massive painless swelling in the left mandible. The patient's medical history was unremarkable. The initial clinical and radiological evaluation indicated an aggressive odontogenic neoplasm or a metastasis from an unknown primary; the suspicion of a systemic metabolic or endocrine disorder lay low on the list of differential diagnoses. Further investigations revealed gross skeletal changes and a hypoechoic right parathyroid mass. The total serum parathyroid hormone levels and ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of the mandibula

Primary aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a cystic bone neoplasm characterized by disease-defining gene fusions involving the USP6/Tre2 gene. The literature describing gnathic ABC is limited. This case report describes a 27-year-old man presenting with a long-standing left-sided facial asymmetry. Multi-detector computed tomography imaging demonstrated a large expansile lesion positioned within the left condylar head. The lesion was biopsied and resected. The specimen showed a giant cell-rich cystic neoplasm, with fibrous tissue lined by multinucleated giant cells. Next-generation sequencing confir

Pediatric mandible tumors are rare and generally benign but can be locally aggressive. Diagnosis and treatment involve tumor identification, excision, and subsequent reconstruction. Successful reconstruction should address form and function of the mandible while minimizing morbidity. The authors review the diagnosis and treatment of a benign pediatric mandible tumor and the use of nonvascularized rib graft for mandible reconstruction. The subject of interest is an 8-year-old boy who presented with progressive left-sided facial swelling and examination findings concerning for a mandibular neopl

OBJECTIVE: Mandibular tumors in the pediatric population are rare. These malignancies are variable in their histology, and combined with their rarity, has made it difficult to describe their clinical course, and treatment guidelines. The aim of this paper is to describe the experience of Boston Children's Hospital, a pediatric tertiary referral center, with treating malignant mandibular malignancies, as well as provide multi-disciplinary team approach in managing this clinical entity.
METHODS: A retrospective search was performed for mandibular malignancies in pediatric patients between 1995

Delayed eruption of a single primary tooth is an uncommon event. Excluding a previous traumatic insult, the presence of a pericoronal odontogenic cyst or neoplasm is the primary cause for this abnormality. This case report describes the clinical and radiographic features of an ameloblastic fibro-odontoma in a young child, who presented with delayed eruption of the primary mandibular canine and prominent buccal expansion. A differential diagnosis for mixed, radiolucent and radiopaque lesions of the jaws will be discussed.

Carotid body tumors (CBT) are rare and usually benign neoplasms (60%-90%), originating from the mesoderm and neural ectoderm. In view of the extensive and unrelenting growth of unresected CBT, encasing vital neurovascular structures, and the significant incidence of malignancy (> or = 10%), surgical excision is the standard treatment of choice. Despite progress in CBT imaging and surgical technique, cranial nerve deficit, stroke, and death continue to affect 10% to 40% of patients undergoing curative surgical resection, particularly in large tumors proximal to the skull base. In such cases, CB

INTRODUCTION: In the pediatric population the submandibular gland requires removal in a number of conditions including, refractory recurrent sialoadenitis, sialolithiasis, salivary gland neoplasms and debilitating sialorrhea. In comparison to the traditional trans-cervical approach, the trans-oral route avoids a cervical scar, potential keloid formation and decreased risk of injury to the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve. This approach also eliminates the potentiality of remnant duct disease since the entire duct and papillae are removed. The article demonstrates the appropriaten

BACKGROUND: Pharmacological inhibition of osteoclast activity is an essential component of oncological therapy for patients with bone metastases. In rare cases, medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) is observed. MRONJ can cause bone defects not inferior to primary or metastatic jaw neoplasms. Oral examination of patients on osteoclast-inhibiting medication aims to identify risk factors at an early stage and to initiate therapy. The current focus on osteoclast-inhibiting drugs in the maxillofacial region is MRONJ. Effects of the substances other than MRONJ are rarely reported.

One hundred and eight ameloblastomas diagnosed in a rural black Africa population were analysed for clinicopathologic findings other than those classically described. One patient had a polycystic ameloblastoma adjacent to an ameloblastic fibroma. Two other polycystic ameloblastomas showed aneurysmal bone cyst formation and one mandibular tumour was diagnosed as a keratoameloblastoma. Microscopic changes resembling an adenomatoid odontogenic tumour were present in association with two unicystic ameloblastomas and a HPV18-positive verrucous lesion occurred in the lining of a cystic space of a po

BACKGROUND: Mandibular pseudocarcinomatous hyperplasia is a rare and generally benign pathology. We report on one of these rare cases.
CASE PRESENTATION: The case history of a 73-year-old white man stated that he had a carcinoma of the oropharynx, which was primarily treated with radiotherapy and chemotherapy 4 years prior. As a result of radiotherapy he developed an osteoradionecrosis of his mandible and a consecutive pathological fracture of his left mandibular angle. Subsequent osteosynthesis was performed with a reconstruction plate. When we first saw him, his reconstruction plate was par

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Several mandibular defect classifications after oncological resection have been proposed with no universal acceptance among surgeons and prosthodontists. Established criteria for describing these mandibulectomy defects are lacking.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review was to analyze the classification systems of mandibular defects available in the scientific literature, provide a critical appraisal, and identify the criteria necessary for a universal description of mandibular discontinuity defects.

INTRODUCTION: Oncocytic thyroid carcinoma, previously known as Hürthle cell carcinoma, is a well-differentiated neoplasm accounting for 3-5% of malignant thyroid tumors. This type of carcinoma exhibits aggressive behavior with a propensity for lymphovascular invasion and distant metastases.
OBJECTIVE: To present an unusual clinical case of oncocytic thyroid carcinoma metastasis to the right mandibular condyle, highlighting its surgical management and clinical significance.
CASE REPORT: An 86-year-old woman with a history of oncocytic thyroid carcinoma treated with total thyroidectomy and rad

Extramedullary plasmactyoma is the solitary, soft tissue form of plasma cell neoplasm but lack the defining features of medullary or multiple myeloma. The diagnosis is difficult to make in routine practice setting due to the morphological and immunohistochemical overlap with plasmablastic lymphoma. We report a case of plasmablastic extramedullary plasmacytoma in a 52-year-old in the mandibular lingual gingiva and discuss its differential from plasmablastic lymphoma. The gingival mass regressed with primary radiotherapy.

Brown tumours are localized bone lesions, seen in patients with high parathyroid hormone levels. This can be due to primary hyperparathyroidism, which occurs more often in neoplasms of the parathyroid gland or due to secondary hyperparathyroidism more often seen as a result of renal impairment. Facial involvement is rare, with most reports focusing on long and axial bones. However, the mandibular bone is often the only bone affected. Here, we report a rare case of a bi-maxillary attainment of brown tumour in a patient with secondary hyperparathyroidism due to chronic kidney disease.
