INTRODUCTION: Gunshot injuries to the oral maxillofacial region have serious aesthetic and functional consequences.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 32-year-old male patient presented with a marginal mandibular resection owing to a gunshot wound. A clinical examination revealed destroyed crowns in teeth 12, 11, and 21; extraction in teeth 13, 22, 24, 31, 32-45; a fracture in tooth 38; and severe pain. Further, he had multiple submental scars and a completely obliterated sulcus. Consequently, a multidisciplinary team was formed who devised the following treatment plan: stage 1, root canal treatment for

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the outcome of immediately loaded distally cantilevered mandibular full-arch prostheses according to the 'all-on-four' concept supported by implants placed in both fresh extraction and healed sites.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective study was conducted in 24 patients with extraction of all remaining mandibular teeth and placement of 4 implants per patient (2 mesial axial and 2 distal tilted) for full-arch mandibular restorations. Implants were inserted in fresh extraction sockets 2.3 ± 1.0 per patient and 1.7 ± 1.0 implants in healed sites. Implants placed in fresh e

Between July 2021 and February 2024, 6 patients with biopsy-confirmed benign pathologic lesions had mandibular defects reconstructed using a reamer-irrigator-aspirator at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Patients' ages ranged from 34 to 73, 5 of which were males and one female. Primary end points were bony continuity of the mandible, recovery time, and ability of the graft to receive implants. The reamer-irrigator-aspirator obtained 40 to 100 cm3 of uncompressed bone from donor sites. All patients ambulated on the day of surgery or postoperative day one. No neurosensory disturbance

A 36-year-old woman with good periodontal health sought treatment for a compensated Class II partially edentulous malocclusion associated with a steep mandibular plane (SN-MP, 45°), 9 missing teeth, a 3-mm midline discrepancy, and compromised posterior occlusal function. She had multiple carious lesions, a failing fixed prostheses in the mandibular right quadrant replacing the right first molar, and a severely atrophic edentulous ridge in the area around the mandibular left first and second molars. After restoration of the caries, the mandibular left third molar served as anchorage to correct

This case report describes the rehabilitation of a patient using an implant‑supported fixed prosthesis in the mandible and a three‑unit fixed partial denture in the maxilla, following the extraction of periodontally compromised teeth. Six endosseous implants were placed in the mandibular arch, achieving favorable primary stability. The postoperative and maintenance phases were uneventful, with no biological or mechanical complications observed. The maxillary arch was restored with a tooth‑supported fixed partial denture, planned to optimize both esthetics and function. At the four‑month follow

The prosthetic treatment of patients with an edentulous maxilla opposing mandibular natural teeth is one of the most challenging endeavors that face clinicians. Occlusal forces from the opposing natural teeth may cause fractures in the maxillary prosthesis and also result in advanced bone loss of the edentulous maxilla. With the presence of extreme gagging reflex, the treatment may become more complicated. This article describes and illustrates the 2-stage surgical and prosthetic treatment of a patient with an edentulous maxilla opposing natural teeth. In the beginning, the patient was treated

Surgical resection of the lower jaw due to the presence of a benign or malignant tumor is the most frequent cause of mandibular deviation. Location and extent of the tumor decide the surgical modality of mandibulectomy to be performed. The clinician must wait for an adequate span of time for completion of the healing and acceptance of the osseous graft before considering a definitive prosthesis. During the inceptive healing period, prosthodontic intervention is of utmost priority for preventing the mandibular deviation. A corrective appliance termed "guide flange prosthesis (GFP)" is indicated

Twenty-three patients with Kennedy Class I mandibular dentition were supplied with prostheses in the posterior parts of the mandible. On one side they were given a prosthesis supported by two implants (prosthesis Type I) and on the other side they received a prosthesis supported by one implant and one natural tooth (prosthesis Type II). Sixty-nine fixtures were inserted and 46 prostheses constructed. Eight of the fixtures were lost during the observation period. The failure rate of the implants was about the same in the two types of prostheses; five fixtures belonged to prostheses Type I (10.9

INTRODUCTION: Anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (EAD) is an inherited syndrome with an incidence of one per 100,000 live births and is characterized by hypotrichosis, anhidrosis or hypohidrosis, and oligodontia. Various treatment options for the dental rehabilitation of children presenting with this disease have been published. There is however no consensus on what age implants should be placed. Our purpose was to describe the disease and rehabilitation with early implants through two case reports.
OBSERVATION: Our two patients, a brother and sister, aged 14 and 15 years respectively, presented

BACKGROUND: Edentulism remains a prevalent condition worldwide, significantly compromising masticatory efficiency, quality of life, and oral health. Various implant-retained and implant-supported prosthetic options have been developed to address mandibular edentulism, yet their biomechanical performance under functional loading remains incompletely understood.
AIM: To compare stress distribution among seven prosthetic designs for the edentulous mandible: two-implant bar and locator overdentures; four-implant bar and locator overdentures; an anterior fixed-posterior removable prosthesis retain

Dental management of patients with epi-dermolysis bullosa (EB) is challenging because of the severe soft tissue lesions associated with this disease. A case history is presented where two immediate endosseous implants were placed in the mandible of a patient with recessive dystrophic EB using computer-aided technology to plan the surgery and prosthetic rehabilitation. After a 24-month follow-up, the prosthesis was stable with healthy asymptomatic soft tissue around the implants. The stereolithographic model provides a precise and noninvasive copy of the mandibular and maxillary arches of patie

Loss of bone in the mandible after tooth removal is associated with anatomic and aesthetic complications and instability of the mandibular complete denture. This continuing bone loss is not limited to alveolar bone; portions of the basal bone may also be resorbed. Thus, mandibular complete denture is the most unstable, unretentive, conventional prosthesis fabricated in routine dental practice. Root-form endosteal implants cannot always be placed in advanced atrophic mandibles without autogenous bone grafting (from either the iliac hip crest or another site) or bone regeneration. The ramus fram

A commonly encountered problem in prosthetic dentistry is the supra eruption of teeth due to absence of opposing teeth. Consequently, replacement of the missing teeth with prosthesis becomes difficult due to lack of vertical dimension of the edentulous area. This article describes the space regaining procedure in a 14-year-old female patient who wanted a fixed prosthesis for her missing maxillary 1st molar. On examination, it was observed that mandibular 1st molar had supraerupted and tipped lingually. After considering the various treatment modalities it was decided to simultaneously intrude

BACKGROUND: Reviewing the literature, the optimal implant position for 2-implant retained mandibular overdentures, which would be associated with improved peri-implant tissues, higher retention values, and better patient satisfaction, remains uncertain. The study was designed to assess the effect of the implant position of two implant-retained mandibular overdentures on clinical outcomes (peri-implant soft tissue health, bone loss, retention, and patient satisfaction).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety edentulous patients with unsatisfactory retention of their mandibular conventional dentures wer
