Nutritional aspects of manganese from experimental studies.

In experimental animals, dietary manganese deficiency can result in numerous biochemical and structural abnormalities. Deficient animals can be characterized by impaired insulin production, alterations in lipoprotein metabolism, an impaired oxidant defense system, and perturbations in growth factor metabolism. If the deficiency occurs during early development, there can be pronounced skeletal abnormalities and an irreversible ataxia. Several lines of evidence suggest that manganese deficiency may be a problem in some human populations. Manganese toxicity can also pose a significant health risk

Effects of manganese on thyroid hormone homeostasis: potential links.

Manganese (Mn) is an essential trace nutrient that is potentially toxic at high levels of exposure. As a constituent of numerous enzymes and a cofactor, manganese plays an important role in a number of physiologic processes in mammals. The manganese-containing enzyme, manganese superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD), is the principal antioxidant enzyme which neutralizes the toxic effects of reactive oxygen species. Other manganese-containing enzymes include oxidoreductases, transferases, hydrolases, lyases, isomerases, ligases and glutamine synthetase. Environmental or occupational exposure to high lev

High dietary manganese lowers heart magnesium in pigs fed a low-magnesium diet.

Young pigs were fed a diet moderately high or low in manganese (Mn) (0.95 +/- 0.10 mmol Mn/kg, n = 8 or 0.040 +/- 0.003 mmol Mn/kg, n = 6) and deficient in magnesium (Mg) (4.1 mmol Mg/kg) for 5 wk. All eight pigs consuming the high Mn diet died following convulsive seizures, whereas only two of six died in the group fed low Mn. In an attempt to determine the cause of death, a subsequent study examined the interactive effect of deficient dietary Mg and Mn on the tissue distribution of Mg and Mn. Pigs were individually fed, for 5 wk, diets that contained: 4.1 mmol Mg/kg and 36.0 micromol Mn/kg,

Manganese intoxication in the rhesus monkey: a clinical, imaging, pathologic, and biochemical study.

We gave three adult rhesus monkeys seven IV injections of manganese chloride at approximately 1-week intervals. We evaluated neurologic status by serial clinical examinations and performed a levodopa test if the animal developed features of basal ganglia dysfunction. After the animals were killed, we performed neuropathologic, neurochemical, and laser microprobe mass analysis (LAMMA) studies. Two of three animals developed a parkinsonian syndrome characterized by bradykinesia, rigidity, and facial grimacing suggestive of dystonia but not tremor. Neither animal responded to levodopa. Autopsy de

Metals in Laysan albatrosses from Midway Atoll.

We examined the concentrations of lead, cadmium, selenium, chromium, manganese, arsenic, tin, and mercury in the heart, liver, kidney, salt gland, and feathers of adult (n = 10) and young (n = 15) Laysan albatrosses (Diomedea immutabilis) from Midway Atoll in the north-central Pacific Ocean. Lead poisoning has been reported in some Laysans nesting near buildings on Midway, but other heavy metals have not been examined. We examined tissue distribution of metals by age and gender (adults only). We also examined tissue concentrations in three birds with a droop-wing syndrome characteristic of lea

Manganism and idiopathic parkinsonism: similarities and differences.

From the comparison we have made between PD and manganism, we draw the following conclusions: 1. There are similarities between PD and manganism, notably the presence of (a) generalized bradykinesia and (b) widespread rigidity. 2. There are also dissimilarities between PD and manganism, notably the following in manganism: (a) less-frequent resting tremor, (b) more frequent dystonia, (c) a particular propensity to fall backward, (d) failure to achieve a sustained therapeutic response to levodopa, and (e) failure to detect a reduction in fluorodopa uptake by PET. Further studies are likely to yi

Comparison of titania nanotubes and titanium dioxide as supports of low-temperature selective catalytic reduction catalysts under sulfur dioxide poisoning.

A series of iron-manganese oxide catalysts supported on TiO2 and titanium nanotubes (TNTs) were studied for low temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3 in the presence of SO2. The results showed that the specific surface area and the amount of Brønsted acid sites were highly correlated. The results also demonstrated that higher Mn4+/Mn3+ ratios and larger specific surface areas might be the main reasons for the excellent performance of MnFe-TNTs catalyst after SO2 poisoning. The SO2 poisoning effect could be minimized by reducing the GHSV, increasing the reaction tempera

Impact of manganese accumulation on Na,K-ATPase expression and function in the cerebellum and striatum of C57Bl/6 mice.

Overexposure to Mn causes a neurological disorder-manganism-with motor symptoms that overlap closely with disorders associated with haploinsufficiency in the gene encoding for α3 isoform of Na+,K+-ATPase (NKA). The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that behavioral changes in the mouse model of manganism may be associated with changes in the expression and activity of α3 NKA in the cerebellum (CB) and striatum (STR)-the key brain structures responsible for motor control in adult mice. C57Bl/6 mice were exposed to MnCl2 at 0.5 g/L (in drinking water) for up to eight weeks. After

Manganese in manganism, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Batten disease: A narrative review.

The collective evidence to date suggests that environmental exposure to excessive amounts of manganese (Mn) can cause a neurodegenerative condition known as manganism. It is now also relatively clear that Mn is involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease and at least some prion diseases. The potential involvement of Mn in a panel of other neurodegenerative conditions including Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Batten disease has been suggested and investigated, but the results to date are somewhat inconclusive. Herein, previously reported exp

Zinc, copper and manganese in the organs of rats after sublethal cyanide intoxication.

Single doses of sodium cyanide (60 mumol/kg body weight s.c.) were administered to male Sprague-Dawley rats. The effects of this poison on the content of the trace elements zinc, copper and manganese was investigated in various organs after 30 min, 2 h, 24 h, 48 h and 1 week. The zinc content in the liver was elevated 24 h after this sublethal cyanide dose (by approximately 20%). In contrast, the copper content in the kidneys was lowered (by approximately 15%) at the same time. Almost similar changes were observed in the same organs after daily administration of the poison for 5 days. For comp

Manganese Intoxication Induced by Total Parenteral Nutrition in the Intensive Care Unit: A Case Report.

Background: Manganese (Mn) is an essential trace element for humans. It has been recognized as a potential occupational toxin, but its danger as a toxin in patients under parenteral nutrition is often forgotten. Case Presentation: A 73-year-old man was logged for 210 days in the intensive care unit (ICU), receiving parenteral nutrition (PN) for a month, and was then transferred, first, to the internal medicine ward and, then, to the rehabilitation hospital, and 223 days after discharge from the ICU, he had current disease, chorea-type movements in the head and neck, and left hemibody. [Occupational poisoning with psychiatric manifestations].

Numerous occupational intoxications (acute, chronic and their sequelae) may affect the central nervous system and result in a wide variety of neuropsychiatric effects, ranging from subtle behavioural disturbances to overt psychosis. Chemicals causing such manifestations include many metals and organometals (Hg, Mn, Pb, Al, Sn), pesticides (organophosphates), compounds utilised in the industrial setting as solvents or intermediates (carbon disulfide, hydrocarbons and their halogenated derivatives), and combustion products (carbon monoxide). Some types of toxic insults may not be reflected in an

A brief history of the neurobehavioral toxicity of manganese: some unanswered questions.

It was observed by Couper in 1837 that manganese dust produces a neurological syndrome characterized by muscle weakness, tremor, bent posture, whispered speech and excess salivation. The similarity of these symptoms to those of Parkinson's disease were not recognized for many years. In addition to its Parkinson-like effects, manganese produces behavioral symptoms in humans including nervousness, hallucinations, memory loss, cognitive problems, bizarre behaviors and flight of ideas. Despite these signs and symptoms, there have been few systematic attempts to study the effects of manganese on be
