Child neuropsychology : a journal on normal and abnormal development in childhood and adolescence2025eng
Cognition in children with cerebral palsy (CP) is often affected. How cognition differs by functional level and subtype is not clear, and the effects of adapted response modes need investigation. In this study, the aims were to investigate how many psychologists reported that interpreters and/or augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) were used, how many assessments were adapted, if there were clinical characteristics associated with whom had been assessed, and to delineate scores from the Wechsler scales with CP by sex, subtype, gross motor function (GMFCS), manual abilities (MACS),

PURPOSE: Manual sign is a common alternative mode of communication taught to children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Gesture use is positively related to later increases in vocabulary and syntactic complexity in typical development, but there is little evidence supporting the use of manual sign for children with CAS. We sought to identify the communicative functions of signs and gestures produced by children with CAS and to identify concurrent factors suggesting which children are more likely to benefit from sign-supported speech intervention.
METHOD: Measures of receptive and expres

AIM: To test the prediction of communication disorder severity at 5 years of age from characteristics at 2 years for children with cerebral palsy (CP) whose communication is giving cause for concern.
METHOD: In this cohort study, 77 children (52 males; 25 females) with communication difficulties and CP were visited at home at 2 (mean 2y 4mo; SD 3mo) and 5 (mean 5y 5mo; SD 4mo) years of age. Information on the type and distribution of motor disorder, seizures, gross and fine motor function, hearing, and vision were collected from medical notes. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), previously called autism, is a developmental condition that can cause significant social, communication, and behavioral challenges. Early symptoms of ASD can easily be overlooked. Clinicians who can recognize the symptoms of ASD can help children get prompt referral to specialists and early intervention, which is key to improving developmental outcomes for children with ASD.

Gestures might serve communicative functions by supplementing spoken expressions or restorative functions by facilitating speech production. Also, speakers with speech deficits use gestures to compensate for their speech impairments. In this study, we examined gesture use in speakers with and without speech impairments and how spoken spatial expressions changed when gestures were restrained. Six patients with speech problems and with left frontal and/or temporal lesions and 20 neurotypical controls described motion events in 3 different conditions (spontaneous gesture, only speech, and only ge

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a problem associated with numbness, burning, tingling, tickling or "pins and needles" sensations in the hand. The syndrome has been linked to occupations that require repetitive pinching and/or repetitive wrist movements, both movements associated with sign language interpreting. Educational interpretors may be particularly at risk and so need accurate information regarding this malady. Without such education, some interpreters will worry needlessly while others delay in seeking essential medical attention. This article profiles groups at high risk for Carpal Tu

This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy and efficiency of using a modeling tool named uSketch for generating patient-specific diagrams in cases of fetal congenital heart disease (CHD). Furthermore, it sought to explore the feasibility of employing uSketch to improve communication efficacy across diverse clinical settings. uSketch successfully produced matched diagrams for 941 cases (98.4%) by single-click, semi-automatic, or manual methods. The mean time required for diagram generation was significantly shorter with uSketch than that with hand-drawn sketches (0.88 ± 0.58 vs. 6.75 ± 2.95 min,

The aim of this study was to develop a core vocabulary list for young children with intellectual disabilities between 2 and 7 years of age because data from this population are lacking in core vocabulary literature. Children with Down syndrome are considered one of the most valid reference groups for researching developmental patterns in children with intellectual disabilities; therefore, spontaneous language samples of 30 Dutch children with Down syndrome were collected during three different activities with multiple communication partners (free play with parents, lunch- or snack-time at home

This study aimed to determine differences in functional profiles and movement disorder patterns in children aged 4-12 years with cerebral palsy (CP) and periventricular white matter injury (PWMI) born >34 weeks gestation compared with those born earlier. Eligible children born between 1999 and 2006 were recruited through the Victorian CP register. Functional profiles were determined using the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS), Manual Abilities Classification System (MACS), Communication Function Classification System (CFCS), Functional Mobility Scale (FMS) and Bimanual Fine Mo

Nineteen elderly hearing impaired subjects participated in an experimental treatment study and received either behavioural hearing tactics or served as untreated controls. Treatment was supplied in the form of a self-help treatment manual supplied with telephone contacts during 4 consecutive weeks. The treatment manual included applied relaxation, communication strategies training, advice to relatives, information, and coping skills. Assessments (pre-post) were conducted in a structured interview measuring coping behaviour. In order to evoke behavioural compensation small acoustic provocations

BACKGROUND: To begin to deliver patient-centered care, providers need to be aware of when a patient has a communication disability and what communication methods to use with the patient. The aim of the study was to describe if and how patients' communication disabilities are documented within electronic health records (EHR).
METHODS: A retrospective manual chart review of all inpatient and outpatient clinical encounter notes within the EHR for patients who had undergone a laryngectomy at Northwestern Memorial Hospital (Chicago, IL) between 2000-2013. We selected patients who had undergone a l

The progressive neuropathology involved in dementia frequently causes a gradual decline in communication skills. Communication partners who are unaware of the specific communication problems faced by people with dementia (PWD) can inadvertently challenge their conversation partner, leading to distress and a reduced flow of information between speakers. Previous research has produced an extensive literature base recommending strategies to facilitate conversational engagement in dementia. However, empirical evidence for the beneficial effects of these strategies on conversational dynamics is spa

INTRODUCTION: Young children with Down syndrome (DS) present with speech and language impairments very early in childhood. Historically, early language intervention for children with DS included manual signs, though recently there has been an interest in the use of speech-generating devices (SGDs). This paper examines the language and communication performance of young children with DS who participated in parent-implemented communication interventions that included SGDs. Specifically, we compared the functional vocabulary usage and communication interaction skills of children with DS who recei

Max is a 21-month old boy with speech and language delay presenting for diagnostic clarification and treatment recommendations. Max was born at 37 weeks after a twin gestation. He is medically healthy and lives at home with supportive parents and a typically developing twin sister. Max began speech and language therapy when he was 14 months old.Max spoke his first word at 16 months. He uses fewer than 10 words or word approximations; however, he does not use these words spontaneously to communicate. Max has decreased use of eye contact and rarely uses nonverbal means of communication. Max whin

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex and often stigmatised mental health condition frequently comorbid with chronic pain and musculoskeletal disorders. Despite regularly encountering individuals with BPD, manual therapists (e.g., physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, and massage therapists) receive limited training on how emotional dysregulation, trauma, and relational sensitivity may influence physical-care encounters.
DISCUSSION: This clinically informed commentary explores how BPD's psychological and neurobiological features intersect with bodily pain, ther

Effective risk communication is essential to shared decision-making in prostate cancer care. However, the quality of physician communication of key concepts varies widely in real-world consultations. Manual evaluation of communication is labor-intensive and not scalable. We present a structured, rubric-based framework that uses large language models (LLMs) to automatically score the quality of risk communication in prostate cancer consultations. Using transcripts from 20 clinical visits, we curated and annotated 487 physician-spoken sentences that referenced five key concepts for shared decisi
