Hydrogen sulfide emissions from a midwestern manure slurry storage basin.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) emissions from midwestern U.S. dairy lagoons are episodic and seasonal. Emissions were determined using an inverse diffusion model in conjunction with measured upwind and downwind line-averaged H2 S concentrations and turbulence. Mean daily H2 S emissions from manure stored in earthen basins was 0.97 μg m-2 s-1 (σ = 1.35 μg m-2 s-1 ). Mean live animal basis daily emission from the basins was 1.1 g d-1 hd-1 (0.84 g d-1 AU-1 ). Daily emission was modeled using the van't Hoff function with air temperature as a surrogate for slurry surface temperature and a linear function

Recovery of phosphorus from dairy manure: a pilot-scale study.

Phosphorus was recovered from dairy manure via a microwave-enhanced advanced oxidation process (MW/H2O2-AOP) followed by struvite crystallization in a pilot-scale continuous flow operation. Soluble phosphorus in dairy manure increased by over 50% after the MW/H2O2-AOP, and the settleability of suspended solids was greatly improved. More than 50% of clear supernatant was obtained after microwave treatment, and the maximum volume of supernatant was obtained at a hydrogen peroxide dosage of 0.3% and pH 3.5. By adding oxalic acid into the supernatant, about 90% of calcium was removed, while more t

Decline in extractable antibiotics in manure-based composts during composting.

A wide variety of antibiotics have been detected in natural water samples and this is of potential concern because of the adverse environmental effects of such antibiotic residues. One of the main sources of antibiotics effluence to the surrounding environment is livestock manures which often contain elevated concentrations of veterinary antibiotics (VAs) which survive digestion in the animal stomach following application in animal husbandry practices. In Korea, livestock manures are normally used for compost production indicating that there is potential for antibiotic release to the environme

Developing a sorptive material of cadmium from pyrolysis of hen manure.

A large amount of manure is generated from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), leading to serious environmental issues and hazardous risks from pathogens, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Therefore, developing an effective method for manure disposal is essential. Thus, in this study, we suggest the use of CO2 in pyrolysis of hen manure (HM) as an effective method to convert the carbon in HM into syngas (especially carbon monoxide (CO)). HM was used and tested as the model compound. From the results of thermo-gravimetric analysis, the decarboxylation of CaCO3 in

Insights into the impact of manure on the environmental antibiotic residues and resistance pool.

The intensive use of antibiotics in the veterinary sector, linked to the application of manure-derived amendments in agriculture, translates into increased environmental levels of chemical residues, AR bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARG). The aim of this review was to evaluate the current evidence regarding the impact of animal farming and manure application on the antibiotic resistance pool in the environment. Several studies reported correlations between the prevalence of clinically relevant ARB and the amount and classes of antibiotics used in animal farming (high resistanc

[Effect of Manure from Different Sources on the Leaching of Antibiotics in Soil].

Antibiotic residues in farmland soils resulting from the application of livestock manure poses risks to the soil and water ecology associated with the spread of antibiotic resistance, thereby threatening environmental safety and human health. Here, a leaching experiment was carried out using soil(CK-T), pig manure(PM-T), cow manure(CM-T), and chicken manure(CHM-T) with the addition of tetracyclines(tetracycline, oxytetracycline, and chlortetracycline) and a control group(without antibiotics). The effects of different sources of manure on soil physical and chemical indicators and bacterial abun

A simple kinetic model applied to anaerobic digestion of cow manure.

A simple model of anaerobic degradation in a continuous stirred digester is presented. The hydrolysis of cow manure was modelled as consisting of two fractions, one rapidly degradable and the other more slowly degradable, and both processes were represented by first-order kinetics in a two-substrate first-order (TSFO) model. The fractions were separated by water flushing. Biomethane potential (BMP) tests were performed to determine the hydrolysis constant and biodegradability of each fraction. The hydrolysis constants of the rapidly and slowly degradable fractions were 0.278 and 0.069 d-1, res

Anaerobic digestion of livestock and poultry manures spiked with tetracycline antibiotics.

We investigated the anaerobic degradation of tetracycline antibiotics (tetracycline [TC], oxytetracycline [OTC] and chlortetracycline [CTC]) in swine, cattle, and poultry manures. The manures were anaerobically digested inside polyvinyl chloride batch reactors for 64 days at room temperature. The degradation rate constants and half-lives of the parent tetracyclines were determined following first-order kinetics. For CTC the fastest degradation rate was observed in swine manure (k = 0.016 ± 0.001 d-1; half-life = 42.8 days), while the slowest degradation rate was observed in poultry litter (k =

Persistence and availability of veterinary antibiotics in soil and soil-manure systems.

The availability and persistence of various antibiotics in soil and soil amended with composted poultry manure were investigated through laboratory incubation assays. Six veterinary antibiotics (one fluoroquinolone, two tetracyclines, two sulfonamides and one lincosamide) and one active metabolite (ciprofloxacin) were studied. The incubation assays were conducted at a controlled temperature of 25 °C with different water regimes, such as constant moisture content (80% of water holding capacity) and drying-rewetting cycles. The studied antibiotics were determined in soil and soil aqueous phase s

Transformation of Sulfonamides and Tetracyclines during Anaerobic Fermentation of Liquid Manure.

Liquid manure is frequently used as soil fertilizer due to its high nutrient content. It can also contain residues of pharmaceuticals, such as antibiotics, if farm animals are medicated. The anaerobic fermentation process in biogas plants is discussed as one way to reduce the input of antibiotics into the environment. Therefore, 10 worldwide-applied sulfonamides (sulfachloropyridazine, sulfadiazine, sulfadimethoxine, sulfaguanidine, sulfamerazine, sulfamethazine, sulfamethoxazole, sulfamethoxypyridazine, sulfapyridine, and sulfathiazole) and four frequently used tetracyclines (chlortetracyclin

In vitro assessment of thyroidal and estrogenic activities in poultry and broiler manure.

Among the many chemicals found in avian manure, endocrine disruptors (EDs), of natural or anthropogenic origin, are of special environmental concern. Nowadays, an increasing amount of estrogens is being released into the environment via the use of manure to fertilize agricultural land. While most research in this field has focused on estrogenic phenomena, little is known about alterations related to other endocrine systems, such as the thyroidal one. Here we simultaneously assessed the potential estrogenic and thyroidal activity of poultry and broiler litter manure using in vitro approaches ba

Levels of antibiotic resistance genes in manure, biosolids, and fertilized soil.

Increasing antibiotic resistance genes in the environment may pose a threat to public health. In this study, tetracycline and sulfonamide resistance genes (Tet-W, Tet-O, and Sul-I) were quantified in 24 manure samples from three farms and 18 biosolids samples from seven different wastewater treatment plants using quantitative polymerase chain reaction methods. Concentrations of Tet-W and Tet-O genes were observed to be significantly higher (p < 0.05) in manure than in biosolids samples. The background soil samples showed significantly lower concentration of the above genes compared with manure

A model for phosphorus transformation and runoff loss for surface-applied manures.

Agricultural P transport in runoff is an environmental concern. An important source of P runoff is surface-applied, unincorporated manures, but computer models used to assess P transport do not adequately simulate P release and transport from surface manures. We developed a model to address this limitation. The model operates on a daily basis and simulates manure application to the soil surface, letting 60% of manure P infiltrate into soil if manure slurry with less than 15% solids is applied. The model divides manure P into four pools, water-extractable inorganic and organic P, and stable ino

Acinetobacter baumannii in manure and anaerobic digestates of German biogas plants.

Studies considering environmental multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter spp. are scarce. The application of manure on agricultural fields is one source of multidrug-resistant bacteria from livestock into the environment. Here, Acinetobacter spp. were quantified by quantitative polymerase chain reaction in manure applied to biogas plants and in the output of the anaerobic digestion, and Acinetobacter spp. isolated from those samples were comprehensively characterized. The concentration of Acinetobacter 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) gene copies per g fresh weight was in range of 106-108 in m

Effect of pyrolysis temperature on the composition of DOM in manure-derived biochar.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an important role in the migration and transformation of nutrients and pollutants. Recently, DOM derived from biochar has the potential to determine the application of biochar and has attracted much researcher's attention. However, the effects of pyrolysis temperature on the composition evolution of DOM in manure-derived biochar are still unclear. In this study, DOM solutions extracted from a series of biochars derived from three kinds of manure (chicken, swine and dairy) at six pyrolysis temperature (200-700 °C) were analyzed using UV-Visible, Fourier tran

Abiotic transformation products of tetracycline and chlortetracycline in salt solutions and manure.

Tetracyclines belong to the group of the most applied antibiotics in veterinary medicine worldwide. Due to their incomplete absorption and/or metabolism in the animal gut, tetracyclines are frequently detected in manure samples. Within the matrix, an elimination of these compounds has been reported in several studies. However, only little information about potential transformation products of tetracyclines in manure and the environment is available. Therefore, the fate of tetracycline (TC) and chlortetracycline (CTC) was investigated in aqueous solutions and manure. Abiotic incubation of TC in

Detection of Clostridium botulinum in liquid manure and biogas plant wastes.

Biogas plants have been considered as a source for possible amplification and distribution of pathogenic bacteria capable of causing severe infections in humans and animals. Manure and biogas wastes could be sources for spore-forming bacteria such as Clostridium botulinum. In the present study, 24 liquid manure and 84 biogas waste samples from dairies where the majority of the cows suffered from chronic botulism were investigated for the presence of botulinum neurotoxins (BoNT) and C. botulinum spores. The prevalence of BoNT/A, B, C, D, and E in biogas wastes was 16.6, 8.3, 10.7, 7.1, and 10.8

Effects of winter manure application in Ohio on the quality of surface runoff.

Winter application of manure poses environmental risks. Seven continuous corn, instrumented watersheds (approximately 1 ha each) at the USDA-ARS North Appalachian Experimental Watershed research station near Coshocton, Ohio were used to evaluate the environmental impacts of winter manure application when using some of the Ohio Natural Resources Conservation Service recommendations. For 3 yr on frozen, sometimes snow-covered, ground in January or February, two watersheds received turkey litter, two received liquid swine manure, and three were control plots that received N fertilizer at planting

Dose effects of Mg and PO4 sources on the composting of swine manure.

A series of experiments were performed to study the effects of magnesium (Mg) and phosphate (PO(4)) addition on the decomposition of organic matter and struvite formation during the composting of swine manure. In these experiments, different amounts of magnesium chloride (MgCl(2)) with or without PO(4) salts were added to the samples, and the optimum molar ratio of Mg and PO(4) to the total nitrogen (TN) in swine manure was studied. The temperature profiles revealed that no organic matter was decomposed when 0.1M or more Mg and PO(4) salts were added and that when 0.05 M ratio of Mg and PO(4)
