Adaptive evolution of the venom-targeted vWF protein in opossums that eat pitvipers.

The rapid evolution of venom toxin genes is often explained as the result of a biochemical arms race between venomous animals and their prey. However, it is not clear that an arms race analogy is appropriate in this context because there is no published evidence for rapid evolution in genes that might confer toxin resistance among routinely envenomed species. Here we report such evidence from an unusual predator-prey relationship between opossums (Marsupialia: Didelphidae) and pitvipers (Serpentes: Crotalinae). In particular, we found high ratios of replacement to silent substitutions in the g

Parasitological examination results of zoo animals in Germany between 2012 and 2022.

Parasitic infections in zoo animals are a critical concern for both animal health and management. The aim of this study was to assess the occurrence of endo- and ectoparasites among zoo animals in Germany. A retrospective analysis of the submitted samples of a diverse range of zoo animals (5768) from a ten-year period (2012-2022) was conducted. Overall, 31.1% of those samples tested positive for at least one parasite. In the examined samples, helminths (28.4%) were found more often than protozoans (10.3%) or ectoparasites (0.8%). Among the various animal groups the following parasites were fou

Gastrointestinal, skin and blood parasites in Didelphis spp. from urban and sylvatic areas in São Paulo state, Brazil.

Didelphis (Marsupialia, Didelphimorphia) are synanthropic mammals, whose omnivorous diet predisposes them to infections caused by endoparasites. Their higher frequency in urban areas makes them potential carriers of zoonotic protozoans and helminths, enhancing potential transmission to humans. Our purpose was to study two common species, Didelphis albiventris (54 individuals) and D. aurita (2 individuals), which were screened for blood, skin and intestinal parasites in animals captured in urban areas and in riparian forest regions associated with the Capivari River Basin, in Monte Mor's munici

Australia's first fossil marsupial mole (Notoryctemorphia) resolves controversies about their evolution and palaeoenvironmental origins.

Fossils of a marsupial mole (Marsupialia, Notoryctemorphia, Notoryctidae) are described from early Miocene deposits in the Riversleigh World Heritage Area, northwestern Queensland, Australia. These represent the first unequivocal fossil record of the order Notoryctemorphia, the two living species of which are among the world's most specialized and bizarre mammals, but which are also convergent on certain fossorial placental mammals (most notably chrysochlorid golden moles). The fossil remains are genuinely 'transitional', documenting an intermediate stage in the acquisition of a number of spec

A Case of Suspected Congenital Hypothyroidism Causing Generalised Alopecia in a Wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons).

An 18-month-old southern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons) was presented with progressive alopecia. Histopathological investigation revealed atrophic hair follicles in telogen. Thyroid hormone levels were decreased compared to age-matched controls. Treatment with thyroxine improved the haircoat. This case highlights the consideration of congenital endocrinopathies as a cause of noninflammatory alopecia in young wombats.

Over-eruption in marsupial carnivore teeth: compensation for a constraint.

Pronounced over-eruption of the canine teeth, causing the cervical enamel margin to extend beyond the alveolar bone and exposing the root, occurs with age and growth in Australian marsupial carnivores, much more than in eco-morphologically equivalent placental carnivores. Suppression of functional tooth replacement is characteristic of marsupials, where most placentals have the primitive diphyodont pattern of two generations of incisor, canine and premolar teeth. Canine and molar tooth dimensions of four species of marsupial carnivores (thylacine Thylacinus cynocephalus, Tasmanian devil Sarcop

The effect of spatial dynamics on the behaviour of an environmentally transmitted disease.

Understanding the spread of pathogens through the environment is critical to a fuller comprehension of disease dynamics. However, many mathematical models of disease dynamics ignore spatial effects. We seek to expand knowledge around the interaction between the bare-nosed wombat (Vombatus ursinus) and sarcoptic mange (etiologic agent Sarcoptes scabiei), by extending an aspatial mathematical model to include spatial variation. S. scabiei was found to move through our modelled region as a spatio-temporal travelling wave, leaving behind pockets of localized host extinction, consistent with field

Herpesvirus genome mapping: a rapid generic approach.

A protocol for mapping the genome of the alphaherpesvirus macropodid herpesvirus 1 is described. This protocol greatly simplifies a similar protocol that was used to map the genome of the poxvirus molluscum contagiosum virus. A single restriction digestion is carried out on the viral DNA, and the fragments cloned into a plasmid vector. The ends of each cloned fragment are sequenced, translated, and used to search peptide sequence databases. Putative genomic maps are constructed by assembling contiguous fragments identified by the sharing of common open reading frames and through the demonstrat

Helminth species of Brazilian marsupials: a comprehensive checklist with updated taxonomy.

Marsupials have been the subject of experimental and natural parasitological studies on helminths in the Americas. Brazil has a significant proportion of the American marsupial fauna, with approximately 15 genera and 69 species out of 95 extant. Helminths have been reported for approximately one-third of the Brazilian marsupial species. Consequently, an update of this information is necessary to ensure the correct identification of the species. This work represents the first comprehensive review of the helminths of the Brazilian marsupials, including taxonomic information on both parasites and

Determining Environmental Factors That Influence the Occurrence of Sarcoptic Mange in Bare-Nosed Wombats (Vombatus ursinus) Using Citizen Science Data.

Sarcoptic mange is a significant welfare and conservation issue in a diverse range of mammalian species, wombats being some of the most impacted. Cases have been observed in bare-nosed (Vombatus ursinus) and southern hairy-nosed (Lasiorhinus latifrons) wombats but not the northern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii). Here, we map the prevalence and model habitat suitability for sarcoptic mange that infests wombats across Australia. Presence-only data was isolated from wombat observation records entered into the citizen science project Wombat Survey and Analysis Tool (WomSAT). Environment

Who was the real sabertooth predator: Thylacosmilus or Thylacoleo?

Sabertoothed mammalian predators, all now extinct, were almost exclusively feloid carnivorans (Eutheria, Placentalia): here a couple of extinct metatherian predators are considered in comparison with the placental sabertooths. Thylacosmilus (the "marsupial sabertooth") and Thylacoleo (the "marsupial lion") were both relatively large (puma-sized) carnivores of the Plio-Pleistocene in the Southern Hemisphere (Argentina and Australia, respectively). Both carnivores have captured the public imagination, especially as predators that were somehow analogous to northern placental forms. But a more det

The effects of spatially-constrained treatment regions upon a model of wombat mange.

The use of therapeutic agents is a critical option to manage wildlife disease, but their implementation is usually spatially constrained. We seek to expand knowledge around the effectiveness of management of environmentally-transmitted Sarcoptes scabiei on a host population, by studying the effect of a spatially constrained treatment regime on disease dynamics in the bare-nosed wombat Vombatus ursinus. A host population of wombats is modelled using a system of non-linear partial differential equations, a spatially-varying treatment regime is applied to this population and the dynamics are stud

Clade-specific forebrain cytoarchitectures of the extinct Tasmanian tiger.

The thylacine, or Tasmanian tiger, is the largest of modern-day carnivorous marsupials and was hunted to extinction by European settlers in Australia. Its physical resemblance to eutherian wolves is a striking example of evolutionary convergence to similar ecological niches. However, whether the neuroanatomical organization of the thylacine brain resembles that of canids and how it compares with other mammals remain unknown due to the scarcity of available samples. Here, we gained access to a century-old hematoxylin-stained histological series of a thylacine brain, digitalized it at high resol

Helminth community structure of Didelphis marsupialis (Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae) in a transition area between the Brazilian Amazon and the Cerrado.

Although the common opossum, Didelphis marsupialis (Didelphimorphia: Didelphidae) is a species widely distributed in South America, knowledge about their helminth parasites and helminth community structure is scarce. The aims of this study were to describe the species composition and analyze the structure of the helminth community of the common opossum in an area of the Amazonian Arc in northern Mato Grosso. The helminths were recovered, counted, and identified in 32 individuals. Overall, 10,198 specimens were categorized into 9 helminths taxa (seven nematodes, one cestode, and one acanthoceph
