Cluster-randomised trial to evaluate the 'Change for Life' mass media/ social marketing campaign in the UK.

BACKGROUND: Social marketing campaigns offer a promising approach to the prevention of childhood obesity. Change4Life (C4L) is a national obesity prevention campaign in England. It included mass media coverage aiming to reframe obesity into a health issue relevant to all and provided the opportunity for parents to complete a brief questionnaire ('How are the Kids') and receive personalised feedback about their children's eating and activity. Print and online C4L resources were available with guidance about healthy eating and physical activity. The study aims were to examine the impact of perso

Awareness about Tobacco Causing Head and Neck Cancers via Mass Media: A Case-Control Study from India.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the awareness of people about the adverse effects of tobacco (smoking and chewing) consumption causing head and neck cancers (HNCs) via mass media channels like television, cinema, radio and newspapers or magazines, wall painting or billboards / hoardings, public transportation and packets of chewing tobacco, bidis or cigarettes. METHODS: Hospital-based case-control was conducted in Pune, Maharashtra, India. Face to face interviews were conducted for the purpose of data collection on 225 cases and 240 controls. Assessment of Carotid Intima Media Thickness and Left Ventricular Mass Index in Children with Idiopathic Nephrotic Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Children with nephrotic syndrome (NS) are at a greater risk of atherosclerosis due to recurrent exposures to hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and immunosuppressive medications. CIMT (carotid intima media thickness) is a reliable marker for assessment of atherosclerosis of large and medium-sized blood vessels; endothelial dysfunction and increased CIMT usually precede the development of cardiovascular diseases. Some manifestations of NS, like proteinuria and hyperlipidemia, are associated with an increased risk of cardiac morbidity and mortality. The aim of the current study was to eva

Search interest in alleged COVID-19 treatments over the pandemic period: the impact of mass news media.

BACKGROUND: Understanding how individuals obtain medical information, especially amid changing guidance, is important for improving outreach and communication strategies. In particular, during a public health emergency, interest in unsafe or illegitimate medications can delay access to appropriate treatments and foster mistrust in the medical system, which can be detrimental at both individual and population levels. It is thus key to understand factors associated with said interest. METHODS: We obtained US-based Google Search Trends and Media Cloud data from 2019-2022 to assess the relationsh

Incubation time and culture media impact success of identification of Nocardia spp. by MALDI-ToF mass spectrometry.

Identification of Nocardia can be challenging, even by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-ToF MS). We examined the impact of incubation duration, culture media and bead-beading on identification success. When isolates were grown for 3 days on SAB (Saboround dextrose agar), then extracted using a bead-beating, ethanol/formic acid (EtOH/FA) procedure, MALDI-ToF MS correctly identified 36.4% to species level. By contrast, 80.9% of isolates were correctly identified to species level when processed with the standard EtOH/FA extraction from Columbia b

Promoting cervical screening after introduction of the human papillomavirus vaccine: the effect of repeated mass media campaigns.

OBJECTIVES: In 2007, Australia implemented an ongoing, school-based human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination programme for school-aged girls, and a catch-up programme for 18-26-year-old women that ran until the end of 2009. The availability of what is widely known as the 'cervical cancer vaccine' means there is the potential for women to believe, incorrectly, that they no longer require regular cervical screening, and this risk needs to be addressed. The current study aimed to assess the effect of three mass media campaigns to promote cervical screening on the rate of cervical screening tests in

Instigating bystander intervention in the prevention of alcohol-impaired driving: analysis of data regarding mass media campaigns.

OBJECTIVE: Research in the area of bystander intervention in the prevention of alcohol-impaired driving (AID) has mostly focused on the influence of existing factors (such as status or relationships) on the likelihood of intervening and has relied mostly on samples of college-age students. It remains unknown whether exposure to external stimuli, such as that of mass media marketing, has the ability to influence bystander intervention and whether differential tendencies to intervene hold true for the larger population. This study sought to explore the influence of external stimuli, in the form

Gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric quantitation of tri-, di- and monomethylxanthines and uric acids from hepatocyte incubation media.

A gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric method is described for the measurement of the concentration of fourteen methylxanthines and methyluric acid metabolites of methylxanthines, especially caffeine, from cell incubation media. The method shows linearity, accuracy and recovery suitable for metabolic studies. The reproducibility of relative retention times is satisfactory (less than 0.07%) and allows rapid and conclusive identification of chromatographic peaks corresponding to metabolites. Moreover, this method enables the simultaneous determination of 3.7-methylxanthine and its 1.7-isomer,

Exposure to mass media chronic health campaign messages and the uptake of non-communicable disease screening in Ghana.

The main goal of this study was to examine the relationship between exposure to mass media health campaign massages and the uptake of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) screening services in Ghana and whether this relationship differs by place of residence. Available evidence suggests a general low uptake of NCDs screening in developing country settings. Unfortunately, many NCDs evolve very slowly and are consequently difficult to detect early especially in situations where people do not screen regularly and in settings where awareness is low. In this study, we contribute to understanding the po

Media Exposure and the Risk of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Following a Mass traumatic Event: An In-silico Experiment.

Introduction: Following mass traumatic events, greater exposure to traditional media like television (TV) about the event is associated with higher burden of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, we know little about how social media exposure, combined with other media sources, shapes the population burden of PTSD following mass traumatic events. Materials and Methods: We built a microsimulation of 1,18,000 agents that was demographically comparable to the population of Parkland and Coral Springs, Florida that experienced the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in 2018. We parametr

Carotid Intima-Media Thickness but Not Carotid Artery Plaque in Healthy Individuals Is Linked to Lean Body Mass.

Background Lean body mass has been identified as a key determinant of left ventricular mass and wall thickness. However, the importance of lean body mass or other body-size measures as normative determinants of carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT), a widely used early indicator of atherosclerosis, has not been well established. Methods and Results Carotid artery ultrasound measurements of cIMT and carotid artery plaque burden (derived from plaque number and maximum size) and measurements of body size, including height, body mass index, weight, body fat proportion, and lean body mass ([1-body

The tic in TikTok and (where) all systems go: Mass social media induced illness and Munchausen's by internet as explanatory models for social media associated abnormal illness behavior.

This paper explores the recent phenomenon of adolescents presenting en masse (both online and in clinical settings) with symptoms seemingly acquired from viewing illness-related content posted by social media influencers. The most frequently reproduced illnesses have included Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) and Tourette Syndrome. It discusses evidence that the recent spate of new-onset, severe tics are a form of Mass Psychogenic Illness facilitated by social media networks (a phenomenon labeled Mass Social Media Induced Illness). It then suggests that many of those self-diagnosed with DID

Mass media representation of suicide in a high suicide state in India: an epidemiological comparison with suicide deaths in the population.

OBJECTIVES: Suicide rates in India are among the highest in the world, equating to over 200 000 suicides annually. Reports of suicides are a routine feature in major newspapers in India, and reporters may selectively present 'newsworthy' suicide stories. The aim of this paper was to systematically investigate whether mass media reports of suicides reflect the epidemiological data on suicide in a high suicide state in India. DESIGN: We undertook a content analysis study to extract sociodemographic data on suicides reported among nine of the most highly read daily newspapers in the high suicide

Are Anti-Tobacco Messages Delivered through Different Mass-Media Channels Effective in India? Results from GATS-II Survey.

BACKGROUND: Anti-tobacco mass-media campaigns are an integral part of tobacco control. There is still a need to understand which mode of mass-media channels aids in promoting tobacco cessation. This study aimed to examine if exposure to anti-tobacco messages delivered through different media channels is associated with tobacco user's thoughts and attempts to quit. METHODS: We selected a sample of tobacco users (N=21857) from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS-2), and assessed the association of noticing the anti-tobacco information through different media channels with tobacco user's thoug

Prevalence of mass social media-induced illness presenting with Tourette-like behavior in Germany between 2019 and 2021.

Starting in 2019, in Germany the first well documented outbreak of mass sociogenic illness induced by social media (mass social media-induced illness; MSMI) occurred presenting with functional Tourette-like behaviors (FTB). This study aimed to provide first data on the prevalence rate of MSMI-FTB in Germany between 2019 and 2021 in the general population. We conducted a large-scale representative population survey in cooperation with the USUMA market and social research institute. Between August and December 2021, n = 2.509 people (mean age: 49.5 years, range: 16-95 years, n = 1.276 females) w

[Railroad suicides and attempted suicides in Austria 1990-1994. Extending the hypothesis mass media transmission of suicidal behavior].

Suicide on railways (either by being run over by or jumping in front of a train) is one of the "hardest' suicide methods. In Austria, 617 suicides or attempted suicides on railways were registered between 1990 and 1994. This amounts to 5.73% of all suicides committed in this period with women showing a higher percentage than men. In both men and women there was a predominance of younger age groups; the mean age was higher in women than in men (48.0 vs 40.4 years). There was a significant increase in suicides or attempted suicides on railways after a television report on the stress suffered by
