BACKGROUND: Aircraft wastewater surveillance (AWS) at airports is an emerging method for detecting pathogens shed by international and domestic travellers. Global spread of infectious diseases occurs rapidly through air travel, and implementing surveillance systems at airports can help identify emerging viruses and track pathogens at scale. We aimed to characterize the viral diversity shed by travellers, which may represent routine viral circulation or active infection, at Ahmedabad airport in Gujarat.
METHODS: We collected wastewater samples from domestic and international terminals where do

The white-eared opossums (Didelphis albiventris) is the largest Brazilian marsupial and a great example of animal synanthropy. Considering the high potential as a carrier of viruses originating from environmental contamination, the presence of Human adenovirus (AdV) and rotavirus was investigated in the feces of rescued white-eared opossums, which were in the process of rehabilitation. The feces of 49 animals were initially investigated by immunochromatography, with three samples positive for AdV and one sample positive for rotavirus. When submitted to PCR and nested PCR, the samples of six an

Next generation sequencing was used to determine the whole genome sequence for two different strains of guinea pig adenovirus (GPAdV) detected in association with outbreaks of pneumonia in Australia in 1996, and in Germany in 1997 using total DNA extracted from infected archival frozen lung tissue as a template. The length of the determined genomic sequences was 37,031 bp and 37,070 bp, respectively. The nucleotide composition showed a relatively high content of guanine + cytosine (G + C) of 62 %. The 99.6 % nucleotide identity between the two sequenced viruses suggests that they may represent

Squirrel adenovirus (SqAdV) was reported previously. However, only partial sequences of its hexon and polymerase genes have been revealed. For the first time, we report the full-length genome of SqAdV including the complete hexon and penton base genes. From internal body organs of 59 red squirrels archived in Korea Bank for Pathogenic Viruses, the hexon, penton base, and full-length genome of SqAdV were determined by a PCR method. Of the internal body organs examined, the spleen showed the highest detection rate (25.42%) for SqAdV whereas the kidney and lung exhibited 18.64% and 3.39% rates, r

We report a rare case of pneumonia caused by human mastadenovirus (HAdV) B55 in France in a patient without recent travel history. HAdV-B55 infection was identified retrospectively after being detected in feces during an investigation for concomitant diarrhea. This case suggests possible silent endemic circulation of HAdV-B55 in France.

Bovine adenovirus (BAdV) is associated with respiratory and enteric diseases in cattle. In this study, the complete genomic sequence of a novel BAdV strain (named BAdV/LN/CHN/2023) was sequenced and annotated using the next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology. The viral genome comprises 32,391 base pairs with a GC content of 44.93%, encoding 33 predicted open reading frames (ORFs), consistent with the genomic organization of mastadenoviruses. Comparative genomic analysis confirmed that BAdV/LN/CHN/2023 contains conserved structural and functional motifs characteristic of the genus Mastadeno

Human adenoviruses (HAdVs) are responsible for various clinical diseases. Molecular epidemiological studies of respiratory HAdVs are limited in Turkey. To determine the main genotypes and epidemiological characteristics of HAdVs in patients with respiratory symptoms. HAdV PCR-positive extracts of nasal/nasopharyngeal specimens sent to the Turkish Public Health Institution from various cities of Turkey in 2015-2016 were investigated by seminested PCR. Partial sequence analysis of the hexon gene of HAdVs was performed. SPSSv.24.0 was used. A total of 23/68 (33.82%) HAdV-positive samples were amp

The presence of a novel adenovirus (AdV) was detected by PCR and sequencing, in the internal organs of a captive polar bear that had died in the Budapest zoo. The virus content of the samples proved to be high enough to allow for conventional Sanger sequencing on PCR-amplified genomic fragments. With this approach, the sequence of the entire genome of the putative polar bear adenovirus 1 (PBAdV-1) was obtained. Although the genome was found to be short, consisting of 27,952 base pairs merely, with a relatively balanced G + C content of 46.3 %, its organisation corresponded largely to that of a

Equine adenovirus 2 (EAdV-2) is one of two serotypes of adenoviruses known to infect equines. Initial studies did not associate EAdV-2 infections with any specific clinical syndromes, although more recent evidence suggests that EAdV-2 may be associated with clinical and subclinical gastrointestinal infections of foals and adults respectively. In contrast, Equine adenovirus 1 is well recognised as a pathogen associated with upper respiratory tract infections of horses. In this study the complete genome sequence of EAdV-2 is reported. As expected, genes common to the adenoviruses were identified

Understanding the spatial spread of viruses within wildlife populations is often a key component of disease management efforts. Viral spread is likely constrained by host ecology, but inter-virus differences in infection strategy might allow some viruses to overcome these constraints, leading to divergent population structures within a common host environment. We studied the phylogeographic structure of six virus taxa (dependoparvovirus, deltavirus, mastadenovirus, betaherpesvirus and two lineages of rabies virus) circulating in common vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus) in Peru, finding that vir

Bats are important reservoirs for emerging zoonotic viruses. For extensive surveys of potential pathogens in straw-colored fruit bats (Eidolon helvum) in Zambia, a total of 107 spleen samples of E. helvum in 2006 were inoculated onto Vero E6 cells. The cell culture inoculated with one of the samples (ZFB06-106) exhibited remarkable cytopathic changes. Based on the ultrastructural property in negative staining and cross-reactivity in immunofluorescence assays, the virus was suspected to be an adenovirus, and tentatively named E. helvum adenovirus 06-106 (EhAdV 06-106). Analysis of the full-leng

UNLABELLED: Since the first description of adenoviruses in bats in 2006, a number of micro- and megabat species in Europe, Africa, and Asia have been shown to carry a wide diversity of adenoviruses. Here, we report on the evolutionary, biological, and structural characterization of a novel bat adenovirus (BtAdV) recovered from a Rafinesque's big-eared bat (Corynorhinus rafinesquii) in Kentucky, USA, which is the first adenovirus isolated from North American bats. This virus (BtAdV 250-A) exhibits a close phylogenetic relationship with Canine mastadenovirus A (CAdV A), as previously observed wi

Adenoviruses are common pathogens in vertebrates, infecting a wide range of hosts, but only having rarely been detected and correlated with disease in cetaceans. This article describes the first complete genomic sequence of a cetacean adenovirus, bottlenose dolphin adenovirus 1 (BdAdV-1), detected in captive bottlenose dolphin population (Tursiops truncatus) suffering from self-limiting gastroenteritis. The complete genome sequence of BdAdV-1 was recovered from data generated by high-throughput sequencing and validated by Sanger sequencing. The genome is 34,080bp long and has 220 nucleotides l

Adenoviruses (AdVs) have been detected in a wide variety of animals. To date, eight types of AdVs in sheep and two types in goats have been identified, which belong to two distinct genera, Mastadenovirus and Atadenovirus. Typically, the term pneumo-enteritis is used to describe adenovirus-induced disease in small ruminants, which has been associated with both enteric and respiratory symptoms of varying severity. The aim of this study was to detect and identify AdVs of small ruminants belonging to the genera Mastadenovirus and Atadenovirus. For this purpose, diagnostic samples (47 lung, 27 inte

Bats are an important natural reservoir of various pathogenic microorganisms, and regular monitoring is necessary to track the situation of zoonotic infections. When examining samples from bats in South Kazakhstan, nucleotide sequences of putative novel bat adenovirus (AdV) species were found. Estimates of amino acid identities of the hexon protein have shown that potentially novel Bat mastadenovirus BatAdV-KZ01 shared higher similarity with monkey Rhesus adenovirus 59 (74.29%) than with Bat AdVs E and H (74.00%). Phylogenetically, BatAdV-KZ01 formed a separate clade, distant from Bat AdVs and

Human adenovirus type 3 (HAdV-3) in the species Mastadenovirus blackbeardi is a frequent cause of hundreds of respiratory infections in Japan, with outbreaks varying in clinical severity. Such a high frequency of cases could be due to regular migration of novel variants or persistent circulation of endemic strains. Either scenario would require different measures to ameliorate the burden on public health. We designed a new cost-effective whole-genome sequencing protocol based on tiled amplicons and nanopore sequencing to clarify the circumstances behind the frequent outbreaks. This protocol wa

The complete genomic sequence along with phylogenetic analyses of an adenovirus (AdV), isolated from a dead captive pygmy marmoset (Callithrix pygmaea) from a Hungarian zoo is reported. Earlier, based on the phylogenetic analysis of the sequence of a PCR-amplified fragment from the DNA polymerase gene, the pygmy marmoset AdV (PMAdV) has been reported to cluster closest to certain chiropteran AdVs. In the following years similar AdVs were discovered in additional mammalian hosts, including a skunk (Mephitis mephitis), African pygmy hedgehogs (Atelerix albiventris), North American porcupines (Er

Here we provide a comprehensive update on the diversity and genetic relatedness of adenoviruses occurring in rodents. Extensive PCR screenings revealed the presence of adenoviral DNA in samples originating from representatives of 17 rodent species from four different suborders of Rodentia. Distinct sequences of 28 different adenoviruses were obtained from the positive samples. Out of these, 20 were from hitherto unknown, putative novel adenoviruses, whereas 6 were variants of previously published murine adenoviruses. Additionally, two known viruses, guinea pig adenovirus 1 and squirrel adenovi
