Reversible Effects of Functional Mandibular Lateral Shift on Masticatory Muscles in Growing Rats.

In this study, we aimed to determine the effects of functional mandibular lateral shift (FMLS) on the muscle mass, fiber size, myosin heavy chain fiber type, and related gene expression in masticatory muscles (masseter and temporalis), as well as whether the baseline levels could be recovered after FMLS correction in growing rats. The FMLS appliance was placed to shift the mandible leftward by approximately 2 mm. After FMLS placement for 2 and 4 weeks, the muscles on the left side had significantly lower wet weight, mean cross-sectional area, and proportion of type IIa fibers than those on the

High Myopia and Thickness of Extraocular and Masticatory Muscles-7T MRI, Preliminary Study.

(1) Background: Myopia is one of the most common refractive errors in the world. The aim of this study was to evaluate the transverse dimensions of selected masticatory muscles (temporalis muscle and masseter muscle) versus the transverse dimensions of selected extraocular muscles (superior rectus, inferior rectus, medial rectus and lateral rectus) in emmetropic and high myopic subjects. (2) Methods: Twenty-seven individuals were included in the analysis, resulting in 24 eyeballs of patients with high myopia and 30 eyeballs of emmetropic subjects. A 7 Tesla resonance was used to analyze the de

Development of masticatory muscles and oral behavior from suckling to chewing in dogs.

1. At the age of 20 postnatal days, more than a half of the dogs (13/20) showed incisor eruption. At the age of 25 postnatal days, half of the dogs (10/20) showed molar eruption. 2. At the age of 24 postnatal days, half of the dogs (10/20) started chewing behavior. 3. EMG amplitudes of temporal muscle were larger than that of masseter muscle until 26.5 days after birth, but they were reversed at 26.5 days after birth. 4. This suggests that in dogs the earlier teeth erupted, the earlier the dominant oral behavior was changed from suckling to mastication, and concomitantly the dominant muscle fo

[Disorders of the coordination of masticatory muscles in lesions of the brain stem].

Observations of 10 patients were reported. In addition to other neurologic deficits, coordination of the trigeminus, a motor nerve, may also be disturbed with brain lesions. Disturbance of bilateral synergism can be demonstrated with the EMG. The muscles closing the jaw on the affected side are paradoxically innervated when the jaw is opened, i.e., they function like antagonists to the muscles responsible for jaw closure on the opposite side. This condition may produce trismus. Similar central disturbances in bilateral coordination of the ocular muscles have also been established. Bilateral sy

Effects of experimental muscle pain on electromyographic activity of masticatory muscles in the rat.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of noxious chemical stimulation of a jaw muscle on postural electromyographic (EMG) activity from several masticatory muscles in lightly anesthetized rats. Unilateral injection of a substance known to induce acute muscle pain (5% NaCl) or longer duration of pain with inflammation (mustard oil) was made into the masseter muscle. The changes in EMG activity following the injection were recorded from the injected and contralateral masseter muscles and the ipsilateral digastric muscle. The algesic chemicals produced a significant but tran

Immediate curative effects of exercise therapy in patients with myalgia of the masticatory muscles.

BACKGROUND: Exercise therapy is occasionally considered as an initial treatment for temporomandibular disorders. However, pain can be exacerbated during exercise therapy. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the immediate curative effects of exercise therapy in patients with masticatory muscle myalgia. METHODS: Fifty-nine patients with masticatory muscle myalgia were included. Therapists performed exercise therapy (stretched the painful masseter and/or cervical muscles along the direction of muscle contraction) in 10 rounds of traction, each lasting 10 s. The patient's pain-free maximum mouth opening d

Focal atrophy of the masticatory muscles caused by pure trigeminal motor neuropathy: case report.

Pure trigeminal motor neuropathy is rare and characterised by weakness of the mandibular motor branch with no signs of involvement of the trigeminal sensory or other cranial nerve. Its aetiology is unclear but it has been hypothesised that a viral infection may be a cause. Magnetic resonance imaging is useful in its diagnosis and typically shows loss of volume of the affected masticatory muscles and infiltration of fat. We describe the case of a 29-year-old woman who presented with a 12-year history of progressive facial asymmetry, which was later shown on imaging to be caused by unilateral at

The NLRP3 Mediates Masticatory Muscle Atrophy by Pyroptosis and Mitophagy.

Masticatory muscle atrophy is relatively common and affects occlusal function, facial appearance, and even quality of life. The molecular mechanisms underlying changes in the masticatory muscles remain largely unknown. The Nod-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome has been extensively reported to be associated with various myopathies; however, little is known about its role in masticatory muscle atrophy. Here, we investigated the function and underlying mechanisms of NLRP3 inflammasome activation in muscle atrophy models both in vitro and in vivo. First, significant atrophy of the masti

[Masticatory muscle disorders and treatment from the perspective of prosthodontics].

Masticatory muscle disorders (MMD) is the biggest subtype of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Among them, local fibromyalgia and myofascial pain are localized lesions, manifested as masticatory muscle pain, which can be aggravated with jaw function. MMD is caused by a combination of multiple factors. Occlusal disharmony such as occlusal trauma, occlusal interference, and decreased vertical dimension of occlusion have the potential risk of inducing or aggravating the MMD. During prosthodontic treatment, iatrogenic occlusal interference should be avoided. Most patients with MMD can be relieved

Nasal CPAP therapy associated with masticatory muscle myalgia.

This case report describes a rare side effect associated with nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP), masticatory muscle myalgia. A 69-year-old man was referred to a clinic specializing in orofacial pain and dysfunction with complaints of pain in the area of the masseter muscles. He was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) 9 months earlier, for which he received nCPAP. Six months ago, his pain complaints started. The pain was diagnosed as masticatory muscle myalgia, due to sleep-related tooth clenching and intense tongue thrusting. These activities were likely related

[Clinical management of masticatory muscle pain: an update of the recommendations].

Besides the different forms of odontalgia, myalgias of the masticatory muscles are the most frequent noninfectious complaints in the orofacial region. After summarizing the recommendations set forth by the Interdisciplinary Working Group of Orofacial Pain within the German Chapter of the IASP (German Pain Society), we present the current state of knowledge regarding the etiology, diagnosis, and therapeutic options, based on an extensive literature search. A systematic literature search was carried out in PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and the database of the Deutsche Zahnärztliche Zeitschrift.

Ultrasound measurements of superficial and deep masticatory muscles in various postures: reliability and influencers.

Masticatory muscle thickness provides objective measurements of the oral motor function, which may change in patients with oral myofascial pain. In this study, we aimed to establish a reliable ultrasound (US) protocol for imaging the superficial and deep masticatory muscles and to identify the potential influencers of the measurements. Forty-eight healthy participants without orofacial pain were enrolled. The intra-and inter-rater reliabilities of US measurements for masseter, temporalis, and lateral pterygoid muscles were assessed. Intraclass correlation coefficients for all muscles were grea
