Bilateral simultaneous hearing conservation mastoidectomy has not been previously documented. We present our experience with this procedure. Three patients with pyogenic meningitis secondary to bilateral unsafe ears had hearing preservation surgeries of both ears in a single sitting. Although ear surgery carries risk of inner ear damage, in our series there was no deterioration of inner ear function in the 6 ears operated on. The air conduction threshold improved in 3 (50%) of the ears. When meningitis results from bilateral otogenic foci as in our series, simultaneous mastoidectomy in both ea

INTRODUCTION: Humans who have close contact with livestock, wild or feral animals can risk acquiring zoonotic infections such as brucellosis, Q fever, and leptospirosis. Human infection with Brucella suis (swine brucellosis) usually follows occupational or recreational exposure to infected animals. Worldwide, many cases of human infection follow contact with infected feral pigs. In Australia there is a growing market for the export of 'wild boar' and a considerable number of people are involved in feral pig hunting. However, feral pig hunters are often hard to reach with health strategies. Acc

Dural exposure may occur during the course of thinning the tegmen tympani and tegmen mastoideum in mastoid procedure. If large area of dura is exposed or lacerated, cerebrospinal fluid and brain herniation may enter the mastoid cavity. We report a case of a patient with injured dura mater and tegmen mastoideum during mastoidectomy for chronic suppurative otitis media with cholesteatoma managed by using DuraGen. The dura mater and tegmen defect healed totally showing the success of the procedure. A collagen matrix like DuraGen is an option for repairing dural tear in mastoid region.

In this article, a Wohlfahrtia magnifica otomyiasis case, a 31-year-old, non-mentally retarded patient who had undergone radical mastoidectomy previously is presented. Maggots in the radical mastoidectomy cavity were removed then topical treatment was applied. The maggots were identified as W. magnifica. In cases of myiasis, identification of larvae following direct extraction and application of preventative methods is essential.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: This article is a retrospective review of 5 cases of delayed labyrinthine fistula in patients with a longstanding canal wall down mastoidectomy.
MATERIAL: All patients had a long-term postoperative follow up with no evidence of complications till they suddenly started to have vertigo. The symptoms were caused by a bony erosion of the lateral semicircular canal detected on physical examination or by a CT-scan. There was no evidence of a recurrent cholesteatoma.
RESULTS: The patients underwent surgery in order to close the fistula, with a good result. In all cases, a fact

Standard recommended treatment for patients with intracranial complications from otitis media, has been radical mastoidectomy, whether cholesteatoma is present or not. This was established in the pre-antibiotic era to improve survival. Over a six-year period, from January 1985 to December 1990, 268 patients were admitted with intracranial and extracranial complications of otitis media. The prospective treatment consisted of antibiotics and surgery. Surgery entailed mastoidectomy and drainage of intracranial collections of pus in all patients. However, prospectively in these patients the ear pa

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the feasibility, morphological, and functional outcomes of endoscopic retrograde transcanal mastoidectomy.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study.
SETTINGS: Tertiary Referral Hospital.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed 31 patients with a diagnosis of chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma that extended to the mastoid cavity who underwent endoscopic transcanal retrograde canal wall down mastoidectomy under general anesthesia. The tympanic membrane and posterior canal wall reconstruction were done using the tragal cartilage palisade technique reinforced with perichondrium.

A long-term, retrospective, non-controlled study was performed on the drainage results of mastoidectomy (both radical and modified radical) and the relevant statistical factors that could influence the anatomic outcome were defined. The present study took into consideration the same cohort of 200 patients we have communicated with before in our previous studies concerning the long-term functional results of mastoidectomy and long-term results of ossicular replacement with biovitroceramic prosthesis. The patients were clinically followed for the same period of 8.12 years. The drainage (anatomic

To find the incidence of complications of modified radical mastoidectomy and to evaluate different parameters that play a role in their causation, we conducted a retrospective study spanning a period of 12 years. Included were 210 patients who underwent primary modified radical mastoidectomies performed by one senior surgeon; of these patients, 163 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The charts were evaluated for patients' age and sex, laterality, intraoperative pathology, and complications. The complications were grouped into nine categories for analysis of their etiology. The results in this s

Transfusion‑related acute lung injury (TRALI) is a life‑threatening disease caused by blood transfusion. However, its pathogenesis is poorly understood and specific therapies are not available. Experimental and clinical studies have indicated that alveolar fibrin deposition serves a pathological role in acute lung injuries. The present study investigated whether pulmonary fibrin deposition occurs in a TRALI mouse model and the possible mechanisms underlying this deposition. The TRALI model was established by priming male Balb/c mice with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) 18 h prior to injection of an a

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Mastoidectomy has long been identified as an effective method of treatment for chronic ear infection. The effect of mastoidectomy on patients without evidence of active infectious disease remains highly debated and unproven. The objective in the study was to examine the impact of mastoidectomy on the repair of uncomplicated tympanic membrane perforations.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study of patients at tertiary referral center.
METHODS: Four hundred eighty-four patients who underwent surgical repair of simple tympanic membrane perforations were identified and reviewed

Modified radical mastoidectomy (MRM) provides relatively safe surgical access for the removal of chronic middle ear and mastoid disease and gives reproducible results. However, it had been suggested that hearing may not be as good as that after "intact canal wall mastoidectomy" (ICWM). This paper reviews 153 tertiary referrals suffering from extensive disease who underwent MRM and compares their hearing results with those obtained by other authors using ICWM and MRM and a variety of reconstructive techniques. In this study there were no dead ears and no significant changes in bone conduction d

In a cohort of 200 patients, we performed both radical and modified radical mastoidectomy (MRM) and followed them clinically for a period of 8.12 years. The functional results were defined by the analytical function of the severity and the period of evolution of the disease. These parameters were defined by assessing the pre-operative absolute hearing threshold (AHT), bon

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term anatomical and frequency-specific hearing results of canal wall down (CWD) and canal wall up (CWU) mastoidectomy by retrograde mastoidectomy (RM) surgical method.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients underwent CWU and CWD procedures with method of RM, 53 and 59 patients between January 2010 and June 2015 were evaluated retrospectively. The pre- and post-operative pure tone average air-bone gap (ABG) values of these patients were recorded in detail at 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 kHz. Pre and post-operative ABG were evaluated in detail in each group i

Attic cholesteatoma with antral extension in tight sclerotic mastoid cavities is a common presentation that creates difficult decision-making intraoperatively. Drilling through a sclerotic and small mastoid cavity, keeping the canal wall intactis often difficult and increases the risk of serious injury. Consequently, a canal-wall-down mastoidectomy is often performed. The endoscopic transcanal modified canal-wall-down mastoidectomy approach allows the benefits of an open cavity for cholesteatoma resection and the benefits of a closed cavity for better long-term care and a more normal ear canal

OBJECTIVE: Candidates for revision tympanoplasty have experienced at least one failed attempt at repair of the tympanic membrane and are, therefore, at higher risk for subsequent repair failure. The adjunctive use of mastoidectomy with tympanoplasty in those patients with noncholesteatomatous chronic otitis media is often used to decrease the risk for subsequent failure. However, at this institution, where we use cartilage tympanoplasty, mastoidectomy is rarely performed in the absence of cholesteatoma. Our objective was to assess outcomes in patients undergoing revision tympanoplasty without

OBJECTIVE: A new minimally invasive cochlear implantation method with direct electrode insertion through the external auditory canal (EAC) is presented.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Surgery begins with a retroauricular skin incision. The bony surface of the mastoid plane behind the ear is dissected free and the skin of the EAC is elevated together with the posterior part of the tympanic membrane. Cochleostomy is performed through the EAC with a microdrill anterior to the round window. A rim is drilled into the postero-superior region of the bony EAC immediately above the incus towards the outer bord
