OBJECTIVES: To identify whether advanced maternal age (AMA), defined as age ≥35 years old, is independently associated with small for gestational age (SGA).
STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort of births from the National Vital Statistics System in the United States from 2009 to 2013. Women were categorized based on four age groups at the time of delivery: 20 to 29, 30 to 34, 35 to 39, and ≥40 years old. The primary outcome of SGA < 10th and SGA < 5th percentiles was compared between the four groups using both univariable and multivariable analyses to determine whether maternal age w

BACKGROUNDS: Maternal hypertensive disorders (MHDs) remain a critical global health challenge, disproportionately impacting low-resource regions. Using GBD (Global Burden of Disease, Injury, and Risk Factor Study) 2021 data, we first analyze global MHD epidemiology from 1990 to 2021 and project trends to 2035.
METHODS: Age-standardized rates and estimated annual percentage change quantified incidence, prevalence, mortality rate, and disability-adjusted life years. Trends were stratified by sociodemographic index (SDI) and geography. Decomposition analysis attributed temporal variances (1990-2

BACKGROUND: Advanced maternal age is associated with adverse pregnancy and delivery outcomes. Few studies have directly compared outcomes between women of advanced maternal age (35-44 years old) and women of very advanced maternal age (≥45 years old).
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine the differences in outcomes between women of advanced maternal age and women of very advanced maternal age.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study conducted at a large urban US medical center. Demographic and obstetrical data were collected in all patients who delivered within the study window (2012

OBJECTIVE: To investigate outcomes of twin gestations with advanced maternal age (AMA).
STUDY DESIGN: Historical cohort of twin gestations cared for by a maternal-fetal medicine faculty practice. Outcomes of patients with AMA (70) and non-AMA (75) were compared. AMA was defined as age > or =35. Analysis including mode of delivery, gestational age at delivery and overall complications was performed. Significance was determined using the chi-square test or the Student's t-test.
RESULTS: The Cesarean rate for AMA was significantly greater compared to non-AMA (80.0% vs. 54.7%; p = 0.001). The ma

Children who are born small for gestational age (SGA) are at increased risk of adverse neurological outcomes, and there is limited evidence that maternal genitourinary (GU) infections may be associated with SGA. Our objective was to explore the possible relationship between maternal GU infection during pregnancy and SGA. We modeled the association between maternal GU infections and SGA using linked South Carolina Medicaid billing data and birth certificate records for 141,035 women and infants born from 1996 through 2002. Controlling for demographic covariates and maternal medical conditions,

Stillbirth rates among single and multiple births show markedly decreasing temporal trends. In addition, several studies have demonstrated that the stillbirth rates are dependent on maternal age, in general, showing a U- or J-shaped association with maternal age. In this study, the temporal trends in and the effect of maternal age on the stillbirth rate were considered simultaneously. Our goal was to split the variation into temporal trends and maternal age effects. We applied two-dimensional analysis of variance because no linear association between maternal age and stillbirth rate can be ass

OBJECTIVES: To determine the risk of intrapartum stillbirth among teen mothers.
METHODS: The Missouri maternally linked data containing births from 1978 to 1997 were analyzed. The study group (teen mothers) was sub-divided into younger (<15 years) and older (15-19 years) teenagers. Women aged 20-24 were the referent category. We used Kaplan-Meier product-limit estimator to calculate the cumulative probability of death for each group and the Cox Proportional Hazards Regression models to obtain adjusted hazards ratios.
RESULTS: The rate of antepartum and intrapartum stillbirth among teenagers

OBJECTIVE: This case-control study was performed to compare the pregnancy outcomes of women aged 40 years and older with those of 20- to 30-year-old women.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Among 28,507 women who delivered in the Zeinabieh and Hafez hospitals affiliated to Shiraz University of Medical Sciences between September 2001 and October 2004, 574 women (2.01%) were 40 years old or older at the time of delivery. Eight cases were excluded because of multifetal pregnancies. From the 566 remaining cases, 200 women (case group) were selected by simple random sampling and their hospital admission char

OBJECTIVE: To determine if the risk for fetal growth inhibition among gastroschisis-afflicted fetuses is heightened among younger gravidas (teen mothers).
METHOD: This was a retrospective cohort study on live-born infants with isolated gastroschisis delivered in New York State from 1983 through 1999. We compared infants of mature (>20 years) mothers with those of younger (<20 years) mothers with respect to the following indices of fetal morbidity outcomes: low birth weight and very low birth weight, preterm and very pre-term, and small for gestational age. We used adjusted odds ratios to appr

AIM: To determine whether patients with septooptic dysplasia (SOD) are of normal birth weight and gestation but are born to mothers who are significantly younger than average.
METHODS: Retrospective study of 30 patients with SOD attending the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Glasgow. Birth data for the Scottish population were used for comparison.
RESULTS: Mean birth weight was 3.42 (range 2.66-4.18) kg. One patient was born preterm while the rest were born at term. Data for the Scottish population were available from 1979 onwards and 26 patients born after this year were selected for analy

Maternal ageing is the only etiological factor unequivocally associated with the occurrence of aneuploid conceptuses. Molecular studies of trisomies have demonstrated that the pattern of recombinaison was an important predisposing factor to meiotic nondisjunction. To complete this data, a large chromosomal study has been undertaken on 1,397 unfertilised human oocytes recovered from women participating in in vitro fertilization programmes. Conventional whole chromosome nondisjunction and premature chromatid separation were the major types of numerical abnormalities observed. A positive relation

BACKGROUND: A twin pregnancy imposes greater demands on maternal physiology and smoking may thus be associated theoretically with a greater risk of preterm delivery than in singleton pregnancies.
POPULATION AND METHODS: From 1989 to 1996 all women who booked for antenatal care at the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark were asked to fill in two questionnaires. Apart from smoking habits, these questionnaires provided information on medical and obstetric history together with information on sociodemographic and other lifestyle variables. Gestational age

PURPOSE: Hypospadias incidence rates have been widely reported to be increasing. During the last 20 years there has been a significant increase in the number of women who delay childbearing until their mid 30s. Therefore, it was of interest to determine if increasing maternal age is an independent risk factor for hypospadias.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from the New York State Department of Health and California Birth Defects Monitoring Program were analyzed from 1983 to 1996 by maternal age groups of less than 20, 20 to 24, 25 to 29, 30 to 34, and 35 or greater years. A Poisson model was fit

Among 639 spontaneous abortions between the 8th and 14th week of gestation 342 (53.5%) revealed an abnormal karyotype. While the rate of trisomies distinctly increased with advancing maternal age, a decrease in the rate of 45,X conceptuses and polyploidies was observed among abortions from older women. The overall relation of XXXX:XXYY among the tetraploidies was 14:11 and that of XXX:XXY:XYY among the triploidies was 26:36:1. However, when the latter was related to maternal age, a reversal of the XXX:XXY ratio of 1:2 in the younger to 2:1 in the older age groups became evident. Furthermore a

The relationship between maternal age and neonatal outcome was examined in 22,689 pregnancies using various determinants of neonatal well-being which included evidence of fetal distress, birth-weight, Apgar scores, the necessity for admission to the neonatal unit and other indicators of neonatal morbidity. Differences in the incidence of congenital malformations and perinatal mortality were also studied. There was a trend towards more frequent fetal heart monitoring, lower birth-weight and a higher rate of neonatal unit admission for infants delivered by younger women. There was also a signifi

PURPOSE: The incidence of women giving birth at advanced maternal age is increasing. Literature regarding the long-term implications of delivery at advanced maternal age is limited. This study aimed to investigate whether advanced maternal age at first delivery correlates with elevated long-term risk of endocrine morbidities.
METHODS: This retrospective population-based study included women who gave birth between 1991 and 2021. Participants were categorized by age at first delivery: < 30, 30-35, 35-40, and > 40 years. Women with pre-existing endocrine disorders before pregnancy were excluded.

An association has been reported between 'low' maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MSAFP) and fetal chromosome abnormalities, notably Down syndrome. We suggest the predictive value be used for genetic counselling when a 'low' MSAFP is found, and present an illustrative risk table. It can also be seen that normal MSAFP in a woman may lower her age-related risks below that previously defined as 'high risk'. However, until good estimates of sensitivity and specificity are available from prospective, population based studies, patients should be told that any risk estimates are rough approximations.
