Effects of REM sleep restriction during pregnancy on rodent maternal behavior.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of sleep restriction during pregnancy on maternal care and maternal aggression in a rodent model. METHODS: Twenty-three female Wistar rats were assigned to one of two groups: control (n=12) or sleep restriction (n=11) during the entire pregnancy. At the fifth postpartum day, the animals were subjected to the resident-intruder paradigm and to the pup retrieval test. RESULTS: Sleep restriction during pregnancy had no direct effects on maternal care. Regarding aggressive behavior, defensive aggression was increased by sleep loss, with a lower responsiveness th

The impact of cumulative maternal trauma and diagnosis on parenting behavior.

This study examines the relative contributions of cumulative maternal trauma, substance use, depressive and posttraumatic stress diagnoses on parental abuse potential, punitiveness, and psychological and physical aggression in a sample of 176 urban mothers. Participants were categorized into four groups: substance use (n = 41), depressed (n = 40), comorbid (n = 47), and control (n = 48). Participants in the three diagnostic groups reported significantly greater interpersonal trauma exposure than did controls. Hierarchical regressions reveal that cumulative trauma is a significant predictor of

Early postnatal diazepam exposure facilitates maternal behavior in virgin female rats.

Virgin female rats do not display maternal behavior if they are not exposed to the pups during several days. This exposure is called induction. In this work we have studied the effects of early postnatal (PO-P16) diazepam (DZ) administration (1 and 2.5 mg/kg, SC) on the display of maternal behavior of virgin female rats when adults. Although we did not find statistically significant differences between P0-P16 DZ treated and control females with respect to the latency of retrieval, P0-P16 DZ administration resulted in a statistically significant increase of the percentage of female rats that be

Naltrexone delays the onset of maternal behavior in primiparous parturient ewes.

Previous studies indicate that morphine facilitates the induction of maternal behavior in nonpregnant multiparous ewes but has no effect in nulliparous females. Naltrexone (NAL) has the opposite effect. The aim of the present experiment was to investigate whether this also applied at parturition in ewes lambing for the first time. We studied the behavior of parturient ewes that received either saline (n = 9) or 50 mg (n = 7) or 150 mg (n = 8) of naltrexone, intravenously, at the first signs of lambing. either dose of naltrexone was found to reduce significantly the duration of maternal licking

Long-term alterations in the maternal behavior of neonatally undernourished rats.

The effect of early food and sensory deprivation on the maternal responsiveness of female rats was investigated. Animals that were neonatally undernourished by daily mother-litter separation (involving both food and sensory deprivation) showed significant deficits in maternal care, consisting of a reduction in nest rating, nursing time, and retrieving responses. Moreover, they exhibited exaggerated grooming and circling movements in comparison with the controls. Dams neonatally undernourished by the nipple-ligation of their mothers (a method that minimizes sensory deprivation) displayed less a

Inapparent maternal ZIKV infection impacts fetal brain development and postnatal behavior.

Zika virus (ZIKV) has emerged as a significant public health concern due to its association with severe neurological outcomes in infants, including microcephaly and congenital Zika syndrome (CZS). However, while the majority of ZIKV infections during pregnancy do not result in CZS, the potential long-term neurological effects of mild or inapparent maternal infections remain poorly understood. In this study, we adapted a model of maternal ZIKV infection in human STAT2 knock-in (hSTAT2) mice to investigate the effects of ZIKV infection during mid-gestation, aiming to mirror typical asymptomatic

Maternal bioactive lipids during pregnancy and early childhood neurodevelopment and behavior.

BACKGROUND: Maternal immune activation, including inflammation and oxidative stress during pregnancy, has been linked to child neurodevelopmental problems (NDP) and emotional and behavioral problems (EBP). Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and their oxidized metabolites (oxylipins) are important bioactive lipids that modulate immune responses, inflammation, and oxidative stress. However, their roles in child NDP and EBP remain unclear. METHODS: This study included 259 mother-child pairs from the PROTECT birth cohort in Puerto Rico. Maternal plasma samples collected around 26 weeks' gestatio

Maternal deprivation affects goat kids' social behavior before and after weaning.

Maternal deprivation has been shown to disrupt the development of neonates. Nevertheless, separating the young animals from their dams soon after birth is a common practice in dairy farming. We investigated the effects of maternal deprivation on goat kids' (Capra hircus) social behavior and social ontogeny before and after weaning. Twenty female kids were raised together with their dams (DR kids) and other lactating goats and kids, whereas 20 female kids were separated from their dams 3 days after birth and artificially reared together (AR kids). At weaning, each treatment group was split in h

Prenatal exposure to air pollution, maternal psychological distress, and child behavior.

BACKGROUND: Airborne polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are pollutants generated by combustion of fossil fuel and other organic material. Both prenatal PAH exposure and maternal psychological distress during pregnancy have each been associated with neurodevelopmental problems in children. The goal was to evaluate potential interactions between prenatal exposure to airborne PAHs and maternal psychological distress during pregnancy on subsequent behavioral problems in children. METHODS: In a longitudinal birth cohort study, 248 children of nonsmoking white women in the coal-burning region

Effects of early life social stress on maternal behavior and neuroendocrinology.

Maternal mood disorders such as depression and chronic anxiety can negatively affect the lives of both mothers and their adult offspring. An active focus of maternal depression and anxiety research has been the role of chronic social stress in the development of these disorders. Chronic exposure to social stress is common in humans, especially in lactating mothers, and postpartum mood disorders have been correlated with high levels of social conflict and low levels of social support. Recent studies have described an effective and ethologically relevant chronic social stress (CSS) based rodent

Ingestive behavior in rat pups is modified by maternal sodium depletion.

Developmental programming by maternal stress during pregnancy is found to influence behavioral development in the offspring. The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of maternal sodium depletion in rats during pregnancy on the development of thirst mechanisms in the offspring. Pregnant rats underwent 3 episodes of saline depletion, induced by injecting sc 10 mg of Furosemide in saline (0.5 ml). The treatment, given on the 14th, 17th and 20th days post-conception, is thought to induce acute sodium depletion on dams. The offspring were tested for their drinking responses to

Overlapping litters in rats: effects on maternal behavior and offspring emotionality.

Female rats have a fertile postpartum estrus, which can result in a simultaneous gestation and lactation and later in the overlapping of two different-age litters. These different physiological and contextual situations may affect the maternal behavior of lactating rats and provoke long-lasting changes in the affective behavior of the litter. Therefore, we aimed to assess the effect of pregnancy and of litter overlapping on the maternal behavior of lactating rats and to describe the maternal- and anxiety-like behaviors of the juveniles that remained in contact with their younger siblings. Effects of dopamine receptor antagonists on ongoing maternal behavior in rats.

The effects of different peripheral doses of four dopamine (DA) receptor antagonists on general activity and maternal behavior were examined in lactating female rats. Administration of the classic D1-like and D2-like DA receptor blocker haloperidol (0.1 and 0.05 mg/kg) disrupted pup retrieval and nest-building behaviors and reduced motor activity. Pimozide (0.5 and 0.2 mg/kg), which has more affinity for DA D2-like receptors, mildly disrupted pup retrieval while showing no significant influence on open-field behaviors. The putative DA D(4) receptor blocker, clozapine (1.5 and 1.0 mg/kg) reduce

Peridural anesthesia disturbs maternal behavior in primiparous and multiparous parturient ewes.

Several experiments were carried out to study the effects of peridural anesthesia (Sylvocaine, 6 ml between sacrum and 1st caudal vertebra) performed either at the first signs of birth (early peridural: EP), or little before expulsion (late peridural: LP). When performed late, peridural anesthesia altered maternal behavior only slightly when compared with controls. By contrast severe deficits were observed in the case of EP. Seven out of 8 primiparae failed to show interest for their lamb within 30 min of the birth of the young (vs. 1/9 in LP group, p less than 0.01). In multiparae these propo

Exploring the Association of Maternal Adverse Childhood Experiences with Maternal Health and Child Behavior Following Intimate Partner Violence.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been empirically linked to a host of negative health outcomes, both physical and psychosocial. Exposures to ACEs make individuals more susceptible to conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancers, and depression. Many of these conditions do not appear until sometime in adolescence or adulthood and have been linked to premature death. OBJECTIVE: This study explores the association between the number and type of exposure to ACEs in women (mothers) who experienced intimate partner violence and health outcomes. Specifically, it

Maternal Hyperglycemia in Pregnancy and Offspring Internalizing and Externalizing Behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between exposure to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and maternal glycemic markers during pregnancy and offspring behaviors at 3 and 5 years. We hypothesized that exposure to maternal hyperglycemia would be associated with more behavioral problems in offspring. METHODS: We included 548 mother-child pairs from the prospective pre-birth Gen3G cohort (Canada). Glycemic markers were measured during a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) in the second trimester of pregnancy. Based on OGTT, we classified 59 women (10.8%) as having GDM according to intern

Maternal antenatal stress and mental and behavioral disorders in their children.

BACKGROUND: Maternal antenatal stress, including symptoms of depression, anxiety and perceived stress, is associated with mental and behavioral problems in children. Whether it is associated with child mental and behavioral disorders remains uncertain. We examined if maternal antenatal symptoms of depression, anxiety and perceived stress were associated with mental and behavioral disorders in their children, if the associations varied according to gestational week, stress type, fluctuating or consistently high symptoms, and if they were driven by maternal or paternal lifetime mood or anxiety d

The Influence of Maternal History of Abuse on Parenting Knowledge and Behavior.

This study examined the intergenerational transmission of abuse among a sample of 681 teen, adult low, and adult high resource first-time mothers. Participants ranged in age from 14 to 36 years, with a mean of 20 years. Exposure to childhood emotional and physical abuse was associated with 6-month parenting behavior; but not parenting knowledge. Teen mothers, as opposed to adult mothers, had higher mean scores for exposure to childhood emotional and physical abuse. Adult high resource mothers reported lower mean scores on each abuse outcome than both teen and adult low resource mothers. For th
