Maternal exposure to tributyltin alters female reproductive system development.

ABSTRACT: Tributyltin (TBT) is a toxic compound used in antifouling paints and known for its endocrine-disrupting properties, including female reproductive dysfunction. We hypothesized that TBT exposure during gestation and lactation induces long-term reproductive alterations in female offspring. Pregnant Wistar rats were orally exposed from gestational day 7 to the end of lactation to 0.01% ethanol (control), TBT 100 ng/kg, or TBT 1000 ng/kg body weight. Female offspring were evaluated at postnatal days (PND) 21, 45, and 180 for biometric, hormonal, and ovarian parameters. Birth weight was re

Maternal exposure to childhood maltreatment and adverse birth outcomes.

Exposure to traumatic events during pregnancy may influence pregnancy and birth outcomes. Growing evidence suggests that exposure to traumatic events well before pregnancy, such as childhood maltreatment (CM), also may influence the course of pregnancy and risk of adverse birth outcomes. We aimed to estimate associations between maternal CM exposure and small-for-gestational-age birth (SGA) and preterm birth (PTB) in a diverse US sample, and to examine whether common CM-associated health and behavioral sequelae either moderate or mediate these associations. The Measurement of Maternal Stress (

Infantile neuroblastoma and maternal occupational exposure to medical agents.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers are often exposed to hazardous agents and are at risk for adverse health consequences that affect not only themselves but also their infants. This study aimed to examine whether such occupational exposure increased the risk of childhood cancer in offspring. METHODS: We used the dataset of the Japan Environment and Children's Study, a nationwide birth cohort involving over 100,000 mother-child pairs. Information was obtained via successive questionnaires that were completed until the child turned 1 year of age. The parents were asked whether they occupationally h

Maternal periconceptional occupational pesticide exposure and neural tube defects.

BACKGROUND: Adverse associations between maternal pesticide exposure and neural tube defects (NTDs) have been suggested but not consistently observed. This study used data from the multisite National Birth Defects Prevention Study to examine associations between maternal periconceptional (1 month preconception through 2 months postconception) occupational pesticide exposure and NTDs. METHODS: Mothers of 502 NTD cases and 2950 unaffected live-born control infants with estimated delivery dates from 1997 through 2002 were included. Duration, categorical intensity scores, and categorical frequenc

Maternal magnesium sulphate exposure predicts neonatal magnesium blood concentrations.

Tocolytic use of magnesium sulphate is associated with excess neonatal mortality and has been proposed to follow a dose-response relationship. This study aimed to define the correlation between maternal and neonatal magnesium blood concentrations. Magnesium blood concentrations were retrospectively obtained for mother-neonate pairs who were cared for at an Intermountain Healthcare facility from January 2009 to October 2011. Complete data were available for 231 mother-neonate pairs. Mean (±SD) maternal and neonatal magnesium concentrations were 5.43±1.69 and 2.98±0.94 mg/dL, respectively. Mater

Maternal occupational exposure to ionizing radiation and birth defects.

So far, only a few studies investigated occupational exposure to ionizing radiation in pregnancy to cause birth defects (BDs). No association between BDs and ionizing radiation, although described for high-dose exposure, could ever be confirmed for employees, or specific job titles. Here, an explorative analysis of a prospective population-based birth cohort used to quantify the prevalence of BDs in infants between 1/2007 and 2/2008 is presented. An active examination of all livebirths by specially trained paediatricians in two defined areas was performed. Additionally, a study-specific questi

Maternal personality disorder and babies' exposure to tobacco smoke.

This study examined the association between smoking practices and maternal personality disorder in a sample of 200 mothers of 2-month-old babies. Maternal personality disorder was robustly associated with allowing smoking in the home and also exposing the baby to tobacco smoke. The findings suggest that mothers with personality disorders might particularly benefit from targeting with education and advice about reducing their baby's exposure to environmental tobacco smoke in the postpartum period.

Maternal seafood diet, methylmercury exposure, and neonatal neurologic function.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether neonatal neurologic function is adversely affected by seafood contaminants from maternal diet during pregnancy. STUDY DESIGN: One hundred eighty-two singleton term births were evaluated in the Faeroe Islands, where marine food includes pilot whale. Maternal serum, hair, and milk and umbilical cord blood were analyzed for contaminants. Levels of essential fatty acids, selenium, and thyroid hormones were determined in cord blood. Each infant's neurologic optimality score was determined at 2 weeks of age adjusted for gestational age, and predictors were assessed b

Post-axial limb defects with maternal sodium valproate exposure.

A male child is described with bilateral talipes equinovarus, absent fibulae with bowing and shortening of the tibiae and facial dysmorphic features. His mother was on a daily dose of 2000 mg sodium valproate for convulsions. This case raises the possibility that postaxial limb defects might be caused by intrauterine valproate exposure.

Perinatal lung development following maternal exposure to methylmercuric chloride.

Mercury ingested from dietary sources has potent neurotoxic and teratogenic effects. Initial studies have shown that mercury may also affect fetal lung development. Since these pulmonary effects may play a role in subsequent neonatal morbidity and mortality due to compromising of the development of the lung, mercury effects in fetal and neonatal lung were investigated. Methylmercuric chloride (MMC), 1,000 ppm (15 mg/kg of body weight); was administered via an intragastric tube to timed-pregnant Swiss/Webster mice on day 9 of gestation. Lungs from fetuses on gestational day 18 and from neonates

Congenital anomalies associated with maternal exposure to oxydemeton-methyl.

Thirty-five workers became ill after they entered a cauliflower field contaminated with residues of three different insecticides, the organophosphates oxydemeton-methyl (Metasystox-R) and mevinphos (Phosdrin), and a carbamate, methomyl (Lannate). One crew member was pregnant with a 4-week-old fetus. At birth, the 3200-g female infant had multiple cardiac defects, bilateral optic nerve colobomas, microphthalmia of the left eye, cerebral and cerebellar atrophy, and facial anomalies. The cardiac defects included ventricular and atrial septal defects, stenosis of the pulmonary artery, and a patent

Maternal cannabinoid exposure. Effects on spermatogenesis in male offspring.

Maternal exposure to cannabinoids influenced spermatogenesis and fertility in their male offspring examined at 60-80 days of age. Approximately 20% less spermatozoa were found in males whose mothers had received either the non-psychoactive cannabinol (CBN) or cannabidiol (CBD) on day 1 postpartum. Males exposed to the major psychoactive component of marihuana, delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) appeared to have spermatozoa in number comparable to controls. This finding may be consistent with the additional observation that CBN or CBD, but not THC, reduced the percentage of successful impregnat

Maternal exposure to alkali, alkali earth, transition and other metals: Concentrations and predictors of exposure.

Most studies of metals exposure focus on the heavy metals. There are many other metals (the transition, alkali and alkaline earth metals in particular) in common use in electronics, defense industries, emitted via combustion and which are naturally present in the environment, that have received limited attention in terms of human exposure. We analysed samples of whole blood (172), urine (173) and drinking water (172) for antimony, beryllium, bismuth, cesium, gallium, rubidium, silver, strontium, thallium, thorium and vanadium using ICPMS. In general most metals concentrations were low and belo

Maternal and neonatal exposure to mercury in the Amazon: A systematic review.

This systematic review investigated maternal and neonatal mercury (Hg) exposure in traditional Amazonian populations. Based on a comprehensive search of five databases (Science Direct, Scopus, Embase, PubMed, and Google Scholar), 13 observational studies (cohort and cross-sectional) published between 1998 and 2022 were selected and assessed using the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Quality Assessment Tool. The results showed transplacental and lactational transfer of Hg, demonstrating consistent positive associations between maternal and fetal contamination levels. However, t

Maternal exposure to zolpidem and risk of specific birth defects.

Zolpidem is a non-benzodiazepine agent indicated for treatment of insomnia. While zolpidem crosses the placenta, little is known about its safety in pregnancy. We assessed associations between self-reported zolpidem use 1 month before pregnancy through to the end of the third month ("early pregnancy") and specific birth defects using data from two multi-site case-control studies: National Birth Defects Prevention Study and Slone Epidemiology Center Birth Defects Study. Analysis included 39,711 birth defect cases and 23,035 controls without a birth defect. For defects with ≥ 5 exposed cases, we

Gastroschisis Due to Maternal Exposure to Carbimazole in A Term Neonate.

Pregnant women with hyperthyroidism need careful management, which is due to the increased risk of maternal and fetal complications. However, safe and effective therapies for hyperthyroidism during pregnancy remain limited. Carbimazole is an anti-thyroid agent and has been used to treat hyperthyroidism. Gastroschisis is a congenital severe abdominal birth defect of the fetus but its etiology remains unclear. Here, we present a case of a female term neonate who developed gastroschisis after being exposed to carbimazole in uteroduring the first and half of the second trimester.

Maternal exposure to violence and offspring neurodevelopment: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Stress during pregnancy is known to affect fetal neurodevelopment. It seems likely therefore that intimate partner violence (IPV) and domestic violence (DV) as extreme stressors will have a similarly adverse effect. OBJECTIVES: A systematic review was conducted to assess the association between prenatal exposure to violence for mothers and developmental difficulties in their children. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, PsycInfo, CINAHL, ERIC, Science Direct, SCOPUS, PsyARTICLES, Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations, Women's Studies International and Gender Studies Database we

Maternal and paternal preconception exposure to phenols and preterm birth.

BACKGROUND: Phenol exposure during pregnancy has been associated with preterm birth, but the potential effect of preconception exposure in either parent is unknown. There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that the preconception period is a critical window of vulnerability for adverse pregnancy outcomes. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether maternal and paternal preconception urinary concentrations of select phenols were associated with the risk of preterm birth among couples attending fertility care. METHODS: The analysis included 417 female and 229 male participants of the Environment and

Maternal exposures and risk of oral clefts in South Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Oral clefts are among the most common congenital anomalies. Most studies on risk factors of oral clefts have been carried out in developed countries. We investigated the associations between maternal exposures in the first trimester and oral clefts in South Vietnam. METHODS: We conducted a hospital-based case-control study during October 2014-November 2015. Cases included 170 patients with nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate and those with cleft palate only. Controls were 170 children without oral clefts, matched to each case by age and gender. Mothers were intervi
