Maternal mental health and adverse birth outcomes.

Recent research in economics emphasizes the role of in utero conditions for the health endowment at birth and in early childhood and for social as well as economic outcomes in later life. This paper analyzes the relation between maternal mental health during pregnancy and birth outcomes of the child. In particular, we analyze the relationship between maternal mental health during pregnancy and the probability of giving birth preterm (PT), having a newborn at low birth weight (LBW) or being small for gestational age (SGA). Based on large population-representative data from the German Socio-Econ

Employer Groups Pushing For Improving Maternal Health.

Given the startling statistic that the rate of women dying of pregnancy-and childbirth-related complications in the United States is increasing, it seems logical that the U.S. health system would focus on improving outcomes in this area of care. But not all health plans address this disparity in health care delivery.

Public health approach to address maternal mortality.

Reducing maternal mortality is one of the major challenges to health systems worldwide, more so in developing countries that account for nearly 99% of these maternal deaths. Lack of a standard method for reporting of maternal death poses a major hurdle in making global comparisons. Currently much of the focus is on documenting the "number" of maternal deaths and delineating the "medical causes" behind these deaths. There is a need to acknowledge the social correlates of maternal deaths as well. Investigating and in-depth understanding of each maternal death can provide indications on practical

Fatty acid status and maternal mental health.

Maternal mental health (MMH) problems are a major public health concern with adverse consequences for women, their offspring and families. Intake of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially the n-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid, which are found predominantly in cold water fish, has been associated with a range of mental health outcomes and may improve MMH. The demands for these fatty acids are increased during pregnancy and lactation, and may influence MMH as they are integral parts of cell membranes especially in the brain and play a role in physio

Maternal health-related behaviours during pregnancy: a critical public health issue.

AIM: The aim of the study was to investigate the health-related behaviours of pregnant women. Maternal health-related habits, use of psychoactive medicines, diet, prevention of neural tube defects, oral cavity hygiene, chronic diseases and physical activity were analysed in a group of pregnant women attending antenatal classes. METHODS: Hundred pregnant women recruited from various antenatal classes in Poznań, Poland, were investigated using a questionnaire based on the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System. RESULTS: The results showed that 29% of pregnancies were unplanned. In women w

Maternal Tuberculosis and Infant Gut and Immune Development: Implications for Maternal-Child Health.

BACKGROUND: Maternal tuberculosis (TB) during pregnancy involves chronic infection, immune activation, and antimicrobial therapy, which may alter the maternal gut, vaginal, and breast milk microbiomes and influence neonatal immune development. METHODS: We conducted a narrative review of studies identified through PubMed and GoogleScholar addressing the maternal TB-microbiome-infant immunity axis. Where evidence from pregnant women with TB was limited, findings were extrapolated from non-pregnant TB populations, antibiotic exposure studies, and broader maternal-infant microbiome research. RES

Mortality-weighted severe maternal morbidity: a novel approach to assessing maternal health outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to develop a robust mortality-weighted severe maternal morbidity (SMM) composite measure that provides increased clinical granularity by measuring the individual and combined risk of inpatient mortality across multiple SMM indicators. The enhanced metric better reflects the complexity gradient of individual patients through a weighted SMM (w-SMM) composite score expressed on a continuous scale. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed 7,174,412 inpatient deliveries from 2016 to 2023 extracted from the Premier Healthcare Database, an all-payer, nati

Maternal Birth Weight From Maternal and Child Health Handbooks Predicts LGA Neonates Better Than Maternal Parameters in Pregnancy.

Objective: This study is aimed at evaluating maternal birth weight, recorded in Japan's Maternal and Child Health Handbooks, as a predictor for large for gestational age (LGA) neonates compared to traditional pregnancy factors. Methods: In this retrospective study, we analyzed maternal and neonatal data from 374 singleton, full-term pregnancies at Keiju General Hospital (2017-2020). Maternal birth weight was obtained from Japan's Maternal Child Health Handbooks, and fasting plasma glucose was measured during the 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Logistic regression models assessed the p

Measures of Maternal Socioeconomic Status in Yemen and Association with Maternal and Child Health Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Reliable measurement of socioeconomic status (SES) in health research requires extensive resources and can be challenging in low-income countries. We aimed to develop a set of maternal SES indices and investigate their associations with maternal and child health outcomes in rural Yemen. METHODS: We applied factor analysis based on principal component analysis extraction to construct the SES indices by capturing household attributes for 7295 women of reproductive age. Data were collected from a sub-national household survey conducted in six rural districts in four Yemeni provinces

Postpartum haemorrhage management, risks, and maternal outcomes: findings from the World Health Organization Multicountry Survey on Maternal and Newborn Health.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical practices, risks, and maternal outcomes associated with postpartum haemorrhage (PPH). DESIGN: Secondary analysis of cross-sectional data. SETTING: A total of 352 health facilities in 28 countries. SAMPLE: A total of 274 985 women giving birth between 1 May 2010 and 31 December 2011. METHODS: We used multivariate logistic regression to examine factors associated with PPH among all births, and the Pearson chi-square test to examine correlates of severe maternal outcomes (SMOs) among women with PPH. All analyses adjust for facility- and country-level cluster

Maternal antenatal health and infant growth outcomes: a Microbiome Understanding in Maternity Study.

The influence of the maternal antenatal environment on infant growth and development beyond the neonatal period is not well understood. This study investigated associations between maternal cardiometabolic health and lifestyle on infant growth during the first year of life. This sub-study of the longitudinal Microbiome Understanding in Maternity Study included 87 mother-infant dyads. Maternal anthropometrics were collected at each trimester. Lifestyle was assessed through the Australian Eating Survey (Trimester T1 and T3) and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (T1, T2 and T3). Infan

Obstetric transition in the World Health Organization Multicountry Survey on Maternal and Newborn Health: exploring pathways for maternal mortality reduction.

OBJECTIVE: To test whether the proposed features of the Obstetric Transition Model-a theoretical framework that may explain gradual changes that countries experience as they eliminate avoidable maternal mortality-are observed in a large, multicountry, maternal and perinatal health database; and to discuss the dynamic process of maternal mortality reduction using this model as a theoretical framework. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of a cross-sectional study by the World Health Organization that collected information on more than 300 000 women who delivered in 359 health facilities in

Leading with Innovation: Maternal Health Transformation in New York City Health + Hospitals.

New York City's (NYC) maternal health crisis drew close attention in the late 2010s, driven by alarming data: Approximately 30 women died annually during childbirth in NYC, Black non-Hispanic women were 12 times more likely to die than white women, and more than 3,000 women experienced life-threatening birth complications each year. In response, NYC committed $12.8 million in July 2018 to reduce maternal mortality and eliminate racial disparities.NYC Health + Hospitals (H+H)-the nation's largest public health system, serving 1.1 million patients annually with roughly 15,000 births per year-bec
