Although children with learning disabilities frequently manifest comorbid reading and mathematics deficits, the cause of this comorbidity is unknown. To assess the extent to which comorbidity between reading and mathematics deficits is due to genetic and environmental influences, we conducted a twin study of reading and mathematics performance. Data from 148 identical and 111 fraternal twin pairs in which at least one member of the pair had a reading disability were subjected to a cross-concordance analysis and also fitted to a bivariate extension of the basic multiple regression model for the

The use of AI-based technologies is reshaping mathematics in ways that extend but also strain the classic Big Science analogy. As in Big Science, the new AI-based mathematical work relies on concentrated computation, specialized and hierarchical teams, sociopolitical justification, and large-scale collaboration. But AI also changes how epistemic labor is distributed and attributed: Systems now generate constructions, explore proof spaces, and formalize arguments, prompting mathematicians to renegotiate how credit, authority, and accountability are assigned across hybrid human-machine assemblag

The present research examined the influence of improved knowledge of odds and mathematical expectation on the gambling behavior of university students. A group of 198 students in an introductory statistics class received instruction on probability theory using examples from gambling. A comparison group of 134 students received generic instruction on probability, and another group of 138 students in classes on unrelated topics received no mathematical instruction. Students receiving the intervention demonstrated superior ability to calculate gambling odds as well as resistance to gambling falla

This article proposes an integrative theoretical model that articulates the interdependence between teacher professional knowledge and identity in mathematics education. An integrative theoretical synthesis of national and international approaches, it distinguishes the professional profile-defined by observable competencies and knowledge-from identity, which is constructed in a situated, dynamic, and reflective manner. The study draws on the MTSK model, Wenger's theory of communities of practice, and the identity framework by Van Zoest and Bohl. It incorporates recent contributions on professi

Mathematical performance relies on multiple cognitive components, including numerical understanding, language comprehension, and working memory. Although children experiencing mathematical difficulties (MD) share common challenges, their underlying cognitive profiles vary considerably. Understanding this cognitive diversity is important for developing targeted assessment and intervention. This study aims to identify and characterize distinct cognitive profiles among elementary school children, based on their general strengths and weaknesses, and their mathematics-specific cognitive domains. We

Many children from low-income backgrounds worldwide fail to master school mathematics1; however, some children extensively use mental arithmetic outside school2,3. Here we surveyed children in Kolkata and Delhi, India, who work in markets (n = 1,436), to investigate whether maths skills acquired in real-world settings transfer to the classroom and vice versa. Nearly all these children used complex arithmetic calculations effectively at work. They were also proficient in solving hypothetical market maths problems and verbal maths problems that were anchored to concrete contexts. However, they w

While mathematics anxiety (MA) has been widely researched in recent decades, this study addresses significant gaps: namely, research that explores the relationship between MA and self-reported mathematics experiences; samples adults with a range of MA levels; and controls for general anxiety. Additionally, the study sampled deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students, whose diverse life and educational experiences often differ from hearing students'. We investigated whether DHH students' experiences with mathematics (i.e., parental behaviors, school environment, and mathematics feelings) and demog

The purpose of this study was to investigate the incremental validity of a set of domain general cognitive measures added to a traditional screening battery of early numeracy measures. The sample consisted of 458 kindergarten students of whom 285 were designated as severely at-risk for mathematics difficulty. Hierarchical multiple regression results indicated that Wechsler Abbreviated Scales of Intelligence (WASI) Matrix Reasoning and Vocabulary subtests, and Digit Span Forward and Backward measures explained a small, but unique portion of the variance in kindergarten students' mathematics per

There is considerable interest in determining whether high-quality American Sign Language videos can be used as an accommodation in tests of mathematics at both K-12 and postsecondary levels; and in learning more about the usability (e.g., comprehensibility) of ASL videos with two different types of signers - avatar (animated figure) and human. The researchers describe the results of administering each of nine pre-college mathematics items in both avatar and human versions to each of 31 Deaf participants with high school and post-high school backgrounds. This study differed from earlier studie

Mathematical ability, especially perception of numbers and performance of arithmetics, is known to rely on the activation of intraparietal sulcus (IPS). However, reasoning ability and working memory, 2 highly associated abilities also activate partly overlapping regions. Most studies aimed at localizing mathematical function have used group averages, where individual variability is averaged out, thus confounding the anatomical specificity when localizing cognitive functions. Here, we analyze the functional anatomy of the intraparietal cortex by using individual analysis of subregions of IPS ba

The purpose of this study was to examine the cognitive and academic profiles associated with learning disability (LD) in reading comprehension, word reading, applied problems, and calculations. The goal was to assess the specificity hypothesis, in which unexpected underachievement associated with LD is represented in terms of distinctive patterns of cognitive and academic strengths and weaknesses. At the start of 3rd grade, the authors assessed 684 students on five cognitive dimensions (nonverbal problem solving, processing speed, concept formation, language, and working memory), and across Gr

Developmental learning disabilities such as dyslexia and dyscalculia have a high rate of co-occurrence in pediatric populations, suggesting that they share underlying cognitive and neurophysiological mechanisms. Dyslexia and other developmental disorders with a strong heritable component have been associated with reduced sensitivity to coherent motion stimuli, an index of visual temporal processing on a millisecond time-scale. Here we examined whether deficits in sensitivity to visual motion are evident in children who have poor mathematics skills relative to other children of the same age. We

INTRODUCTION: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and learning difficulties are two diagnostic categories of great social importance and impact, and which are associated in around 25-35% of cases. One explanation offered by researchers to account for this overlap is a deficit in executive functioning (EF).
AIMS: 1) To compare EF and applied mathematical knowledge in children with ADHD, difficulties in learning mathematics (DLM) or ADHD + DLM, and to identify the deficiencies they experience. 2) To verify whether the phenotype hypothesis is fulfilled in the case of the ADHD + DLM c

In the present study children with dycalculia were described and compared with children with specific reading and spelling disabilities and children without clinical diagnosis. All children were referred to a child psychiatric outpatient and inpatient department. The comparison was carried out over clinical data drawn from the general data documentation and from written case reports including diagnostical, anamnestical, symptomatological and developmental neurological data. More than 50% of the dyscalculic children displayed other child psychiatric disorders, especially emotional disorders. It

Running two separate two-stage randomized trials, we implement and test three variants of a small group instruction intervention aimed at improving mathematics competencies for the 20% lowest achievers in mathematics in grades 2 and 8 in Danish public schools. We calculate immediate impacts on math competencies as well as impacts in the medium term and conduct cost-effectiveness analyses of the different intervention arms. The context is the Scandinavian welfare state with an already high-quality public school system. Nevertheless, we find very large positive and cost-effective impacts of seve

Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a rare neurological condition that causes impaired blood flow to the brain, transient ischemic attacks or strokes, and accompanying cognitive impairments, especially in executive functioning. There is little data on the impact of this rare condition on academic outcomes in late childhood and adolescence. Here, we present the case of Ms. X, a 17-year-old white female diagnosed with MMD, who presented with evidence of a specific learning disorder (SLD) in mathematics. Ms. X was diagnosed with MMD at 6 years old and underwent revascularization surgery. Though she recover

The current study aimed at investigating the comorbidity between reading disability (RD) and mathematical disability (MD) in a non-alphabetic language context. Over 1,900 Chinese first graders were screened on their reading and mathematics achievement twice. Children who scored consistently below the 10th percentile in reading and/or mathematics were identified as RD and/or MD respectively. A subsample of these children, together with a group of typically-achieving children, were further assessed on their cognitive capacities. Results suggested that while there were cognitive deficits that wer

In this chapter, we address one potentially overlooked component of the relation between executive function (EF) skills and early mathematics, a relation for which there is widespread empirical support. Evidence for this relation has, thus far, been largely correlational. Here we emphasize that because positive correlations do not guarantee concordance among all members of a sample or population, a small but meaningful number of children may either fare well in mathematics despite poor EF skills, or may have strong EF skills despite weak mathematics skills. We propose that attention to differe

In order to assess the genetic etiology of the comorbidity of reading and mathematics difficulties, data were ascertained from two samples: (1) 102 identical and 77 same-sex fraternal twin pairs in which at least one member of each pair is reading disabled and (2) 42 identical and 23 same-sex fraternal twin pairs in which at least one member is math disabled. Composite reading and mathematics performance data from each sample were fitted to the basic multiple regression model for the analysis of selected twin data and its bivariate extension. Resulting estimates of bivariate heritability and t

Reading and mathematics performance data from a sample of 264 reading-disabled twin pairs and 182 matched control twin pairs were subjected to multivariate behavior genetic analysis. The factor structure of reading and math performance measures was found to be highly similar for both groups. Consistent with previous findings obtained using alternative methods, a significant heritable component to individual differences in reading performance was found both within the reading-disabled (h2 = 0.78) and control (h2 = 0.74) twin samples. In addition, a substantial genetic influence on mathematics p
