Distribution of incompatibility factors in natural populations of Hypsizygus marmoreus in Japan.

Hypsizygus marmoreus (bunashimeji in Japanese) is a major cultivated edible mushroom in Japan. Characterizing its mating incompatibility factors in natural populations is essential for improving breeding efficiency. In this study, 71 wild isolates of H. marmoreus collected from different regions in Japan were analyzed to determine the composition and distribution of incompatibility factors. Mating tests using tester monokaryotic strains identified 82 cases of monokaryons that were carrying different alleles at both the A and B mating locus, whereas another 60 factors were shared among isolates

Intra- and Intersexual Mate Competition in Two Cultures : A Comparison of Women's Response to Mate Competition with Women and Gender-Nonbinary Males in Samoa and among the Istmo Zapotec.

The present study examined women's mate competition tactics in response to female and feminine-male rivals in two cultures in which competition against both occurs. In Samoa and the Istmo Zapotec (Southern Mexico), women not only compete with other women (intrasexually) but also compete with rival feminine males (intersexually) in order to access/retain the same masculine men as sexual/romantic partners. Using a mixed-method paradigm, women were asked about their experiences of intra- and intersexual mate competition, and these narratives were recorded. The tactics reportedly employed by parti

Development of factor VIII:C antibodies in dogs with hemophilia A (factor VIII:C deficiency).

Classic hemophilia A (factor VIII:C deficiency) was diagnosed in a miniature Schnauzer dog and a breeding program established. Inbreeding and crossbreeding produced 16 hemophilic animals. All were initially treated with canine cryoprecipitate, as required, for sporadic hemorrhagic events. Five animals developed potent antibodies to canine factor VIII:C. All were the offspring of obligate carriers, resulting from the mating of a hemophilic purebred miniature Schnauzer male to a normal female Brittany spaniel. The mean age at first treatment and factor VIII exposure at the time of inhibitor deve

Swarming Behavior in Anopheles gambiae (sensu lato): Current Knowledge and Future Outlook.

Effective management of insect disease vectors requires a detailed understanding of their ecology and behavior. In Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (s.l.) (Diptera: Culicidae) mating occurs during swarming, but knowledge of their mating behavior under natural conditions is limited. Mosquitoes mate in flight over specific landmarks, known as swarm markers, at particular locations. Swarms consist of males; the females usually approach the swarm and depart following copulation. The number of mating pairs per swarm is closely associated with swarm size. The shape and height of swarm markers vary and m

Pseudomonas shiyinii ST4 inhibits sexual mating of Sporisorium scitamineum through the GacS/GacA two-component system and the mib1 gene cluster.

Sugarcane smut is one of the most devastating fungal diseases affecting sugarcane plantations. The virulence of the causative agent, Sporisorium scitamineum, depends on a process called sexual mating of compatible sporidia MAT-1 and MAT-2 to form infectious dikaryotic hyphae. We previously isolated Pseudomonas shiyinii strain ST4, capable of inhibiting the fungal sexual mating. However, its biocontrol mechanism remains unclear. In this study, Tn5 mutagenesis of strain ST4 led to the identification of a number of genes potentially associated with the biosynthesis of mating inhibitors. Among the

Semen Modulates Inflammation and Angiogenesis in the Reproductive Tract of Female Rabbits.

The maternal environment modulates immune responses to facilitate embryo development and ensure pregnancy. Unraveling this modulation could improve the livestock breeding systems. Here it is hypothesized that the exposure of the female rabbit reproductive tract to semen, as well as to early embryos, modulates inflammation and angiogenesis among different tissue segments. qPCR analysis of the gene expression changes of the anti-inflammatory interleukin-10 (IL10) and transforming growth factor beta family (TGFβ1-3) and the angiogenesis mediator vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF-A) were ex

Mating behavior of the West Nile virus vector Culex pipiens - role of behavioral asymmetries.

Culex pipiens is a vector of West Nile, Rift Valley fever, Japanese encephalitis and Usutu viruses. In agreement with the criteria of Integrated Vector Management, several research efforts have been devoted to develop behavior-based control tools to fight mosquito vectors. However, our knowledge of mosquito mating biology and sexual communication is still patchy. Despite the high relevance of C. pipiens as a vector of medical and veterinary importance, no studies on its mating behavior and the factors routing mating success have been conducted. In this study, I quantified the mating behavior o

Effects of Melatonin on Early Pregnancy in Mouse: Involving the Regulation of StAR, Cyp11a1, and Ihh Expression.

To test whether melatonin plays an important role in the process of early pregnancy, melatonin was given in drinking water to pregnant mice at different gestation stages. These included mice who were given melatonin 14 days prior to their successful mating (confirmed by vaginal plug) (Group A), after successful mating (Group B), and 14 days prior to and until after successful mating (Group C). Melatonin administration significantly enhanced serum as well as ovarian melatonin levels in the mice. It was observed that melatonin did not affect the natural estrous of mice. On day 0.5 of gestation (

Biotic factors as key determinants for ovarian and oothecal developmental plasticity of a tortoise beetle.

Ovarian development in r-selected species is a highly dynamic process widely studied in various insect groups. An array of biotic and abiotic factors may influence it. So, the present investigation was to evaluate the impact of a female's age and mating status on the ovarian development, ootheca formation, body colour polymorphism, and fat content of the tortoise beetle, Aspidomorpha miliaris (Fabricius). Females of a certain age and mating status were dissected to demonstrate changes in their ovarioles, lateral oviduct, accessory gland, elytral colour, fat body content, and body size. It was

Sequences upstream of the STE6 gene required for its expression and regulation by the mating type locus in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

The STE6 gene of Saccharomyces cerevisiae is an a-specific gene; it is repressed in alpha cells by the alpha 2 product of the mating type locus. To study the role of sequences upstream of STE6 in its regulation and expression, we have determined the DNA sequence of the promoter region, identified the start sites for the STE6 transcript, and identified sequences governing its transcription. Deletions that remove DNA upstream of the STE6 gene were produced and assayed for effects on regulation and expression. The deletions defined two intervals upstream of the STE6 transcription initiation sites

Evaluation of the role of exogenous pathogens on the incidence of embryo loss during early pregnancy in mice.

The mating of CBA/j female mice (H2k) by DBA/2j male mice (H2d) typically results in an elevated incidence of spontaneous embryo loss thus providing an ideal genetically controlled laboratory model for the study of the factors causing early embryo loss during pregnancy. There is now considerable data on the cells and factors involved in fetal resorption but little is known about the events which activate this process. While the activation of the maternal response to the fetal implant could have endogenous or genetic origins, a role for exogenous factors including microbial pathogens could also

A conserved C2H2 zinc finger protein, Rel1, links ribosome biogenesis to sexual development and antifungal susceptibility in a ubiquitous human fungal pathogen.

Sexual development is a fundamental process that promotes environmental adaptation and the emergence of highly virulent and drug-resistant isolates in the human fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans. Although the genetic factors involved in the sexual life cycle have been extensively investigated in this pathogenic fungus, the critical regulator(s) beyond transcriptional machinery remain poorly understood. Rei1, a conserved C2H2-type zinc finger protein, functions as a 60S ribosome biogenesis factor and plays a crucial role in maintaining cellular growth at low temperature in yeast. In this

Prezygotic reproductive barriers in precopulatory behavior of tidepool copepod species.

Complexity in prezygotic mating behavior can contribute to the emergence of sexual incompatibility and reproductive isolation. In this study, we performed behavioral tests with two tidepool copepod species of the genus Tigriopus to explore the possibility of precopulatory behavioral isolation. We found that interspecific mating attempts failed prior to genital contact, and that this failure occurred at different behavioral steps between reciprocal pairings. Our results suggest that prezygotic barriers may exist at multiple points of the behavioral process on both male and female sides, possibl

The effects of box stocking density on the reproduction of female Bombus terrestris (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Bombini).

Bumblebees (Bombus spp.) are important pollinators that are widely used for greenhouse crop pollination and are produced annually by commercial breeding facilities. In this study, we used the commercially important bumblebee species Bombus terrestris Linnaeus (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Bombini) to evaluate the effects of artificial box stocking density on the reproductive performance of newly eclosed females under commercial rearing conditions. Newly eclosed gynes and workers were artificially held in separate wooden boxes at different stocking densities (1 to 150 individuals per box for gynes and

Canine systemic lupus erythematosus. Genetic analysis of an established breeding colony.

Three breeding lines, originating from dogs with SLE, have been established. Two lines were initiated by mating a female with SLE with a normal male. The third line resulted from a mating of two affected dogs. Brother-to-sister matings have reached the third generation in each line. In addition, backcross and outcross matings were carried out. More than one-third of the autopsied dogs had thymic abnormalities. The commonest lesion was a lymphoid follicle; the thymus of one dog contained multiple granulomas, and in one animal a reticulum cell sarcoma of the thymus was found. Multiple serologica

The alpha-specific cell identity factor Sxi1alpha is not required for virulence of Cryptococcus neoformans.

Cryptococcus neoformans is a human fungal pathogen that has two mating types (a and alpha). Experiments have shown that in some backgrounds alpha strains are more virulent than a strains. Our studies reveal that the only known alpha-specific factor, SXI1alpha, is not necessary for virulence.

Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) consumption is associated with higher bone mineral density in postmenopausal women.

Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) tea consumption is higher in Argentina and other South American countries than those of coffee or tea (Camellia sinensis). The effects of Yerba Mate on bone health have not previously been explored. From a program for osteoporosis prevention and treatment, postmenopausal women who drank at least 1 L of Yerba Mate tea daily during 4 or more years (n=146) were identified, and matched by age and time since menopause with an equal number of women who did not drink Yerba Mate tea. Their bone mineral density (BMD) was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA

Investigation of SNPs in GDF9 gene and their relationship with some reproductive traits of Ossimi and Rahmani sheep in different lambing seasons.

BACKGROUND: Fertility is an important economic trait for sheep breeding. The growth differentiation factor 9 (GDF9) is a key gene influencing the reproductive traits in sheep. We focused on investigating SNPs in the GDF9 gene and their relationship with some reproductive traits like pre-mating weight, lambing weight, litter size (LS), DRIL (days from rams’ introduction to lambing), lamb birth weight, lamb gender and survival rate in Ossimi and Rahmani sheep. PCR, Single‑strand conformational polymorphism and sequencing were performed on the genomic DNA of 231 ewes (144 Ossimi and 87 Rahmani) t

Evolution of nuptial gifts and its coevolutionary dynamics with male-like persistence traits of females for multiple mating.

BACKGROUND: Many male animals donate nutritive materials during courtship or mating to their female mates. Donation of large-sized gifts, though costly to prepare, can result in increased sperm transfer during mating and delayed remating of the females, resulting in higher paternity. Nuptial gifting sometimes causes severe female-female competition for obtaining gifts (i.e., sex-role reversal in mate competition) and selection on females to increase their mating rate, changing the intensity of sperm competition and the resultant paternity gains. We built a theoretical model to simulate such co
