BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Segmental, depressed fractures of the posterolateral maxillary sinus may occur as a result of trauma to the masticator space, previously described in association with mandibular fractures. The authors hypothesize that the fracture is due to a transient increase in pressure in the masticator space (blow out) and therefore should be seen in association with other regional fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Injuries of the masticator space were retrospectively identified by searching the imaging database from January 2014 to November 2014 for keywords that would identify r

Fifty patients with maxillary fractures treated by closed reduction over an 85 month period at a Level I trauma center were reviewed. Thirty patients (60%) experienced forty-one midfacial complications. The most frequent problems were infraorbital nerve paresthesia (12), enophthalmus (5), septal deviation (3), and altered vision (3). No relationship could be established between complications and age, sex, cause of injury, or the method of suspension used. Most complications were related to concomitant injury or the concurrent management of fractures of other facial bones. Only eight problems (

Between 1978 and 1984, 558 patients with complex facial fractures have been treated. One hundred and seventy-one of these patients have had complex Le Fort fractures of the maxilla. In this group of patients, the importance of direct anatomic reconstruction of the anterior maxillary buttresses has been assessed. Complete exposure of the injured buttresses will facilitate assessment of the exact fracture pattern. Direct fixation of the medial and lateral maxillary buttresses on each side, in combination with immediate bone-graft reinforcement or replacement of comminuted or missing buttresses,

Background: Maxillary tuberosity fracture is an uncommon but clinically significant complication of maxillary molar extraction. It may compromise immediate surgical outcomes, reduce posterior maxillary bone volume, and complicate subsequent prosthetic or implant rehabilitation. Despite its clinical relevance, the available literature remains limited and heterogeneous, and no universally accepted recommendations for diagnosis or management have been established. Methods: This structured narrative review was undertaken to synthesize clinically relevant evidence on anatomical risk factors, biomec

A heretofore unreported type of facial fracture is discussed. Twenty-two cases of posterior maxillary wall fracture are reviewed, of which 59% demonstrated concomitant mandibular fracture. The proposed mechanism for this injury is an impact from the ipsilateral mandibular coronoid process striking the posterior maxillary wall, with associated mandibular dislocation or fracture. As such, further investigation of the mandible may be warranted when this type of maxillary wall fracture is encountered to exclude concomitant injury.

STUDY DESIGN: A single blind randomized controlled study.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the use of ultrasonography intraoperatively to assess the reduction of unilateral zygomatic complex fractures with a control group using the conventional blind digit palpation.
METHODS: The study comprised of a sample size of 24 patients with 21 male and 3 female patients. Patients of all age groups diagnosed with unilateral displaced zygomatic complex fracture with or without mandible fracture were included in the study. The subjects were randomized into study and control groups based o

Maxillary fractures present complex challenges in facial trauma repair due to the intricate anatomy and functional importance of the midface. Traditional fixation methods, such as titanium plates and screws, provide mechanical stability but are associated with complications, including infection, palpability, and interference with imaging. This review examines the role of Glass Fiber-reinforced Composites (GFRC) as an emerging alternative for maxillary fracture repair, emphasizing its mechanical properties, clinical applications, and potential for improving patient outcomes.GFRC offers distinct

RATIONALE: Medial maxillary fractures are defined as fractures of the medial aspect of the maxilla, that is, fractures of the nasomaxillary buttress. The diagnosis of medial maxillary (nasomaxillary buttress) fractures is challenging because of its similarities with nasal, and naso-orbito-ethmoidal (NOE) fractures.
PATIENT CONCERN: The patients included a 17-year-old Japanese man and a 37-year-old Japanese woman with facial injuries. Swelling of the affected cheek, nasal hemorrhage, periorbital ecchymosis, and C-shaped deviation of the nasal dorsum with normal nasal tip and root position were

The major challenge in traumatic injuries is the management of subgingival fracture of anterior teeth. Forced orthodontic extrusion is a suitable approach for these teeth as it provides both a sound tissue margin for final restoration and creates a periodontal environment (biological width) which is easy for the patient to maintain. Restoration after orthodontic eruption may present a more conservative treatment choice in young patients compared with the prosthetic restoration after extraction. This paper reports a case of the fractured maxillary anterior tooth at the subgingival level that wa

An 80-year-old patient fell while jogging, hitting his face on the concrete trail and causing a horizontal root fracture of his maxillary right central incisor. The fracture separated the root into 2 halves about 0.60-0.84 mm apart, resulting in extrusion of the incisal half. The patient had severe lip swelling and facial injury but no tooth pain. Various options for care were evaluated, but, other than reducing the extrusion, placing local antibiotics, and prescribing periodontal medication, the dentist did not provide or recommend further treatment. At the most recent recall, 8 years after t

The aim of this study was to elucidate the precise location of the maxillary ostium using computed tomography for the reduction of depressed nasomaxillary fractures.Computed tomography images (61 males, 42 females; age range, 3-97 years) were analyzed. Coronal sections were cut every 3 mm.The primary maxillary ostium (PMO) was located 24.7% ± 3.9% of bizygomatic distance (BZD) lateral to septum. The horizontal distance of the PMO significantly increased with age (P = 0.032). The PMO was located 53.3% ± 8.0% of nasal length (NL) above superior surface of the palatal bone (SP). The vertical-to-h

AIM: This in vitro study aimed to test the fracture resistance of 4 different posts used in the restoration of severely decayed primary incisors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty primary incisors were selected for this study and sectioned 1 mm above the CEJ. After filing and irrigation of the root canal space, the canals were obturated with Metapex and 3 mm of post space was prepared inside the canals. Intact glass fiber posts, split-ended glass fiber posts, composite resin posts, and orthodontic γ 'gamma' wire posts were used as intracanal posts and the final composite resin restoration was plac

Fracture of the maxillary tuberosity sometimes can happen when pneumatization of the maxillary sinus extends between the roots of upper molars. Some factors may lead to this complication including prominent or curved roots, chronic periapical infection, hypercementosis, root ankylosis and tooth fusion. This paper reports a case with fracture of the maxillary tuberosity following extraction of an upper first molar in general dental practice. Prevention from any complication during extractions of maxillary molars with large antral enlargement is possible with careful preoperative examination and

Aberrant tooth development following facial fractures is unusual. It is commonly reported that tooth buds involved in the line of a mandibular fracture will continue to develop normally and erupt sequentially. Few cases have been cited regarding developing teeth in the line of maxillary fractures. In the case reported, the normal growth and position of a maxillary third molar can be seen to be retarded at the position of a maxillary fracture, sustained by a child in the mixed dentition phase of dental development.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the most frequent radiographic appearance of bony lesions associated with vertically fractured roots of endodontically treated maxillary premolars.
STUDY DESIGN: The radiographic features of 102 endodontically treated teeth and their periradicular areas (51 with and 51 without vertically fractured roots) were evaluated and compared.
RESULTS: The predominant appearance of the periradicular area in the teeth with vertically fractured roots was the "halo" lesion (57%); by contrast, in the non-vertically fractured roots group, a "periapical" r

PURPOSE: The goal of the current study was to evaluate the ability to diagnose the presence of an inferior orbital wall fracture through the use of a transantral endoscopy technique at bedside.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seven trauma patients with initial axial computed tomography (CT) scan findings consistent with an orbital floor fracture were studied. Before endoscopy, the patients underwent a coronal CT scan with 3-mm cuts for later comparison with the endoscopic findings. The surgeon performing the endoscopy procedure was blinded to the results of the coronal CT scan. Visual acuity, intraocul

In this paper a new technique for correction of maxillary, the anterior down fracture technique, protrusion is introduced and operative experience of 21 cases were reported, with one typical case presented in detail. The advantage of this technique and the combination with other orthognathic surgical operations were discussed. We believe that anterior down fracture technique is a new and good procedure for correction of maxillary protrusion, and should be advocated.
