Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT), or the Pindborg tumor, is very rare neoplasm, which accounts up to 1% of all odontogenic tumors. These tumors involve mandible almost twice as common as the maxillary bone, mostly in the premolar and molar region and present at first with local swelling. There is no gender predilection and the tumor usually appears between 2nd and 6th decade of life. We report the case of a 36-year-old male patient with a Pindborg tumor in the maxillary region on the right side, also involving the adjacent maxillary sinus, with destroying of the local anatomical

Pindborg tumor or calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor is a rare benign neoplasm. The average age at diagnosis is 40 years without a significant prevalence for one sex. The most frequent localization is the mandibular premolar and molar area; less frequently the lesion is found in the maxilla, while other localizations like the maxillary sinus are extremely rare. Ethiology of this lesion is not clear. The complete surgical removal of the lesion is usually considered the most common type of treatment. The authors report a peculiar case of Pindborg tumor characterized by a rare localization o

Endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) widely conducted in nasal and paranasal sinus surgery provides superior magnification, illumination, and angled visualization, enabling the surgeon to isolate the tumor base and accurately define disease extent. Endoscopic medial maxillectomy (EMM), an advanced ESS procedure, effectively treats benign sinonasal neoplasms such as inverted papilloma. We analyzed a series of EMM cases and their clinical outcomes, including 9 inverted papillomas, 1 solitary fibrous tumor, 1 hemangioma, 1 blood boil and 1 esthesioneuroblastoma. EMMs were conducted by an experienced su

Maxillary sinus cancer with metastasis outside of the head and neck is a relatively rare occurrence. We describe two cases of carcinoma of the maxillary sinus that metastasized to the spine and compressed the cauda equina. In the first case, the neurological complication happened synchronously with the primary malignant neoplasm, while in the second instance, cauda equina compression occurred several months later. The treatment of metastatic compression of the cauda equina consisted mainly of radiotherapy, with palliation being achieved in one patient. Survival was expectedly short (3 months)

Olfactory neuroblastoma is an uncommon intranasal neoplasm that has not been previously documented to invade the oral cavity. The tumor's variable clinical manifestations and microscopic features may create a diagnostic dilemma for the clinician. The neoplasm has been identified as a direct cause of ectopic arginine vasopressin production leading to inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion. An unusual case of olfactory neuroblastoma invading the oral cavity through the maxillary sinus in a patient with pathologic antidiuretic hormone secretion is reported.

The radiographic manifestation of malignant lesions of the maxillary sinus on dental radiographs may be nonspecific, making it difficult to differentiate the lesion from disease of odontogenic origin or more benign sinus pathoses. A radiopaque mass in the maxillary sinus, resulting from a malignant neoplasm growing within or extending into the sinus, can be easily confused with the mass of a mucous retention pseudocyst. Similarly, a malignant growth in the early stages of development can produce radiographic patterns in the alveolar process that may resemble inflammation of odontogenic origin.

Maxillary cancers include neoplasms arising in both maxillary sinus and oral cavity (upper alveolar ridge, hard palate) according to the American Joint Committee on Cancer. Although it is universally accepted that the combination of surgery and radiotherapy seems to be the treatment of choice, there is no accordance about the treatment of clinically negative neck. We retrospectively analyzed 20 patients with maxillary sinus cancer and 37 with an upper alveolar ridge or hard palate cancer, evaluating the incidence of N-disease and the recurrence at local site. On the basis of our findings, we c

BACKGROUND: Recently, modified endoscopic medial maxillectomy (MEMM) has been described as an alternative technique to open maxillectomy for benign sinonasal neoplasms. However, few reports discuss the efficacy of MEMM for treatment of inflammatory disease of the maxillary sinus. We evaluate the efficacy of MEMM in treating chronic maxillary sinusitis.
METHODS: A retrospective review of patients who underwent MEMM for refractory inflammatory disease between December 2002 and September 2004 was performed. All patients were treated with MEMM alone or as part of an endoscopic sinus surgery proce

This article represents an overview of normal and pathological findings of the oral structures for the practicing radiologist. Some of the disease processes discussed are of dental etiology, whereas others are manifestations of systemic diseases. Normal tooth development is described followed by an overview of radiolucent, radiopaque, and mixed lucent-opaque lesions. In the radiolucent category, normal anatomical landmarks of the jaws include the mental foramen, manidbular canal, incisive canal and maxillary sinuses. Other lucencies that represent normal structures or variations include develo

Myxoinflammatory fibroblastic sarcoma (MIFS) is rare and malignant soft-tissue neoplasms that typically present in the extremities. In the literature, MIFS has been reported in the groin, back, neck, nose, and temporal regions in addition to the extremities. We report a case of MIFS presenting with the complaints of nasal bleeding, purulent nasal discharge, and swelling on the right side of his face. Polypoid tissues protruded from the middle meatus were observed and initial diagnosis was inverted papilloma. The painless tumor was initially mistaken for low-grade myxofibrosarcoma in biopsy. Ma

Maxillary sinus hypoplasia (MSH) is an uncommonly encountered condition by otolaryngologists. The computerized tomography (CT) scans provide valuable data about the anatomic details of the paranasal sinuses. MSH may be misdiagnosed as an infection or a neoplasm of the maxillary sinuses. Variations of the other paranasal structures, especially the uncinate process associated with MSH were defined. MSH shows three distinct hypoplasia patterns. Type I MSH characteristics are mild hypoplasia of the maxillary sinus, normal uncinate process and a well-developed infundibular passage. Significant hypo

BACKGROUND: Classic Hodgkin lymphoma is a malignant neoplasm of the lymphatic system that commonly presents with cervical and mediastinal lymphadenopathy. Primary extranodal disease of the head and neck is rare, with only a few cases reported in the literature. In this case report, we describe the presentation, treatment, and clinical outcome of a patient who presented with extranodal Hodgkin lymphoma of the maxillary sinus.
METHODS: We report a case of extranodal classic Hodgkin lymphoma of the maxillary sinus treated with 2 cycles of chemotherapy and consolidative radiotherapy (RT). We also

UNLABELLED: Adenomatoid odontogenic tumour is a rare benign, odontogenic tumour with uncertain histogenesis. Whether it is a hamartoma or a neoplasm is still a controversial topic. It is usually associated with an unerupted maxillary canine. Here, we discuss a follicular adenomatoid odontogenic tumour in a young girl with uncommon features such as it arose from two unerupted teeth and partial resorption of the roots of other normal teeth. The tumour was large enough to completely occupy the maxillary sinus. It was treated with enucleation and curettage by lateral rhinotomy approach.

Central ossifying fibroma is a benign neoplasm, having slow growing nature. Some rare lesions show very aggressive nature, multifocal appearance and reach up to a very massive size. So, these kinds of cases require special attention for their treatment. A unique case of central ossifying fibroma with aggressive nature, multifocal appearance is reported. This case shows growth both in maxilla and mandible with maxillary lesion massive in size involving maxillary sinus. There have not been any such cases reported so far in the literature showing bimaxillary growth of ossifying fibroma.

Unusual presentation of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the maxillary antrum. Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare tumour which affects mainly the major and accessory salivary glands. It is an aggressive neoplasm characterized by early neural invasion and a high incidence of local recurrence and distant metastases, which may develop years after the initial resection. Surgery followed by radiotherapy seems to be the best treatment. Based on a well-illustrated case of extensive maxillary ACC involving the palate, orbit floor, and pterygo-palatine fossa, we discuss the prognosis and the importanc

Ameloblastoma is an odontogenic neoplasm of enamel organ type tissue which does not undergo transformation to the point of enamel formation. We present the second case in the English literature of maxillary ameloblastoma that presented with nasal obstruction and rhinorrhoea, and the first to be excised using a combined maxillotomy and endoscopic ethmoidectomy. The patient had no previous dental history. The unusual presenting symptoms, as well as the highly destructive nature of these lesions when arising in the maxilla, make them worthy of consideration in the differential diagnosis of nasal

IMPORTANCE: Noncongenital immature teratomas in the head and neck are extremely rare, and to our knowledge have not previously been reported in the maxillary sinus of a pediatric patient.
OBSERVATIONS: Teratomas are neoplasms that contain tissue from more than 1 embryonic cell layer that is foreign to the location where they arise and are most commonly found in the sacrococcygeal and gonadal regions in children. We present an unusual case of an immature teratoma in the maxillary sinus of a 10-year-old boy and discuss the diagnostic workup, management, and clinical course.
