The role of differential diagnosis in intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia of the sinonasal cavity mimicking angiosarcoma: A case report.

Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH), also known as Masson's tumour, is an unusual vascular lesion characterized by the proliferation of endothelial cells. The principal significance of IPEH is its clinical and radiological resemblance to angiosarcoma, resulting in a potential misdiagnosis and overtreatment. The aim of the present study is to report a rare case of IPEH of the right maxillary sinus, focusing on the radiological and histopathological features of the neoplasm and their role in the differential diagnosis with angiosarcoma. Herein we present a case of a 67-year-ol

Large calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor with extension into the maxillary sinus: a case report.

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is a rare, locally invasive neoplasm characterized by the presence of amyloid material that can become calcified. It often is found in the posterior region of the mandible. Such tumors in the maxilla and those that invade the maxillary sinus are extremely rare. This article presents the sixth reported clinical case of a CEOT that invaded the maxillary sinus and extended to the interior of the nasal cavity. The tumor had grown toward the sinus roof, but there was no association with an impacted tooth. Histopathologically, the tumor was composed of

Immature teratoma of the maxillary sinus: a rare pediatric tumor.

IMPORTANCE: Noncongenital immature teratomas in the head and neck are extremely rare, and to our knowledge have not previously been reported in the maxillary sinus of a pediatric patient. OBSERVATIONS: Teratomas are neoplasms that contain tissue from more than 1 embryonic cell layer that is foreign to the location where they arise and are most commonly found in the sacrococcygeal and gonadal regions in children. We present an unusual case of an immature teratoma in the maxillary sinus of a 10-year-old boy and discuss the diagnostic workup, management, and clinical course. CONCLUSIONS AND REL

Cementoblastoma of posterior maxilla involving the maxillary sinus.

Cementoblastoma is a rare neoplasm, representing <1% of all odontogenic tumors. It usually occurs in the posterior mandible and is associated with roots of a mandibular first molar or second premolar. This paper presents a rare case of cementoblastoma in the maxillary posterior region involving the maxillary sinus, in a young female patient. The clinical, radiological, and histopathological features of the lesion are discussed along with a review of previously reported cases in the literature.

Treatment Outcomes of Maxillary Sinus Squamous Cell Carcinoma at a Dedicated Cancer Institute: A Retrospective Study.

Introduction Squamous cell carcinoma arising at the maxillary sinus is a rare neoplasm, characterized by an aggressive growth pattern and glooming prognosis. The proximity of the maxillary sinus with complex anatomical structures such as the eye, skull base, infratemporal fossa, pterygomaxillary fossa, nasal cavities, and ethmoid sinuses makes the surgical treatment of tumors infiltrating into these structures very challenging. The study's objective was to investigate the prognostic factors of survival and maxillary sinus SCC treatment outcomes. Methods We did a retrospective analysis of patie

Ameloblastoma of the maxillary sinus 11 years after extirpation of extensive dentigerous cysts and dystopic wisdom tooth.

We present the case of a 36-year-old patient with ameloblastoma of the maxillary sinus. The history of the patient was extraordinary with respect to the diagnosis of an extensive odontogenic cyst of this sinus with a maxillary wisdom tooth located far from the region of origin. Both cyst and tooth had been completely extirpated more than 10 years prior to the current tumor diagnosis. Diagnosis of ameloblastoma was based on routinely processed specimen and supported by immunohistochemical markers. Localization and extension of both cyst and neoplasm support the assumption that both entities aro

Surgical treatment of sinonasal inverted papilloma.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To highlight how surgery of inverted papilloma has developed during the past year. Moreover, to give our own opinion on the state of research regarding inverted papilloma surgical management. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies covering surgical treatment of inverted papilloma concentrated on the optimum surgical management aiming at complete resection, least morbidity and best outcome, with special interest regarding the maxillary and frontal sinuses. In maxillary sinus inverted papilloma, to avoid empty nose and/or epiphora, recent articles exerted all attempts to preserve th

Orbital compartment syndrome during endoscopic drainage of subperiosteal orbital abscess.

BACKGROUND: Orbital compartment syndrome is a rare ocular emergency requiring immediate intervention to prevent vision loss. It can arise due to a variety of causes including trauma, neoplasms and retrobulbar hemorrhage during endoscopic sinus surgery. Lateral canthotomy and inferior cantholysis is a well-known therapeutic procedure to rapidly relieve raised intraocular pressures. CASE REPORT: We report a case of a subperiosteal orbital abscess due to acute maxillary sinusitis that underwent endoscopic drainage. Intraoperatively, he developed raised intraocular pressure following irrigation o

Squamous cell carcinoma at maxillary sinus: clinicopathologic data in a single Brazilian institution with review of literature.

Squamous cell carcinoma arising at maxillary sinus is a rare neoplasm, characterized by aggressive growth pattern and glooming prognosis. There are no studies describing specifically its epidemiology in the South America. The aim of the current paper is to characterize a Brazilian maxillary sinus squamous cell carcinoma sample and to compare such data with others worldwide relevant series. The records of the Brazilian National Cancer Institute (1997-2006) were gathered and plotted. Additionally, an extensive literature review was carry out using electronic database (PUBMED/MEDLINE and LILACS)

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumours of the maxillary sinus: A brief clinical report and review of the literature.

Although inflammatory myofibroblastic tumours (IMTs) have been accepted as a clonal neoplasm, their pathology is poorly understood due to variable presentation. There is no identifiable cause and they are usually observed as tumour growth combined with inflammation. In the current WHO classification, IMTs are designated as intermediate malignancies. In terms of biological potential, IMTs are classified under 'rarely metastasizing'. IMTs are rare in the maxillary sinus but, when reported, can be locally aggressive or even destructive if they invade the orbit. The authors present a brief clinica

ENT assessment in the integrated management of candidate for (maxillary) sinus lift.

As stated at the 1996 Consensus Conference at Babson College, a (maxillary) sinus lift is a "safe and predictable" procedure for increasing alveolar bone height in the postero-superior alveolar regions in order to allow oral rehabilitation and restore masticatory function by means of the insertion of a dental implant even in the case of an atrophic maxilla. However, the procedure has a well-known impact on the delicate homeostasis of the maxillary sinus: the concomitant presence of systemic, naso-sinusal or maxillary sinus disease may favour the development of post-operative complications (par

Multiple myeloma of the thyroid cartilage.

A 60-year-old male presented with hoarseness. His past medical history was remarkable for a plasmacytoma of the left maxillary sinus having been resected without systemic evidence of plasma cell myeloma (PCM), also known as multiple myeloma (MM), at the time. This maxillary sinus disease recurred and was treated with radiation. Workup for PCM was conducted. Treatment included melphalan and autologous stem cell transplant. Because of the therapeutic and prognostic implications, a Plasma cell neoplasm (PCN) in a neck mass must be carefully evaluated by clinical and pathological criteria in order

A possible association of pernicious anemia with neoplasia.

7 out of 39 patients with pernicious anemia developed 9 different neoplasms during a period of 3--20 years after the diagnosis of pernicious anemia. These primary neoplasms originated from the lymph nodes, larynx, colon, stomach, kidney, meninges, maxillary sinus and eighth nerve. Treatment with vitamin B12 did not influence the development of tumor. Statistical analysis showed that the observed incidence of 9 neoplasms in this group was significantly higher than the expected 3.3 cases during the aggregate follow-up period (p = 0.002). Although a higher incidence of neoplasms in patients with
