Periapical radiographs are routinely used in dental practice for diagnosis and treatment planning purposes. However, they often suffer from artifacts, distortions, and superimpositions, which can lead to potential misinterpretations. Thus, an automated detection system is required to overcome these challenges. Artificial intelligence (AI) has been revolutionizing various fields, including medicine and dentistry, by facilitating the development of intelligent systems that can aid in performing complex tasks such as diagnosis and treatment planning. The purpose of the present study was to verify

The rehabilitation of patients with acquired defects of the maxilla is a challenge in terms of reestablishing oronasal separation. In most patients these goals are met by means of prosthetic rehabilitation with an obturator prosthesis. If the remaining dentition does not offer sufficient retention and support, the placement of zygoma implants can enhance the stability of the prosthesis. Due to the anatomic intricacies of the zygomatic bone and the implant length, computer-supported navigated implant placement can be advantageous. In the following clinical report, a diabetic patient with a stat

After orbital exenteration and high- dose irradiation (60 Gy on average), 17 endosseous implants were placed periorbitally in 5 patients. No hyperbaric oxygen therapy was performed. All implants were primarily covered with regional or free flaps. After second-stage surgery and aesthetic rehabilitation with an external maxillofacial prosthesis, the pocket depth and implant stability (periotest) were checked, an occipitonasomental radiograph was taken and the soft tissue assessed in short recall intervals. When the implant was uncovered, osseointegration was stable. Within a follow-up period of

The aim of this study was to evaluate extraoral prostheses and the use of extraoral implants in patients with facial defects. 10 cases were treated utilizing maxillofacial prostheses employing extraoral implants in five cases. 16 extraoral implants were installed. Seven implants were placed in irradiated sites in the orbital regions. Six implants were placed in mastoid regions and three in a zygoma region that was irradiated. Two implants failed before initial integration was achieved in irradiated areas. Using 14 extraoral implants as anchors, five extraoral prostheses were set. The other fiv

This clinical report describes the use of a glass fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) substructure to reinforce the silicone elastomer of a large facial prosthesis. The FRC substructure was shaped into a framework and embedded into the silicone elastomer to form a reinforced facial prosthesis. The prosthesis is designed to overcome the disadvantages associated with traditionally fabricated prostheses; namely, delamination of the silicone of the acrylic base, poor marginal adaptation over time, and poor simulation of facial expressions.

BACKGROUND: Facial mutilation and deformities can be caused by cancer, tumours, injuries, infections, and inherited or acquired deformities and has the potential to degrade one's quality of life by interfering with fundamental tasks like communication, breathing, feeding, and aesthetics. Depending on the type of defect, producing maxillofacial prostheses for the rehabilitation of patients with various defects can be challenging and complex. The prosthesis is used to replace missing or damaged parts of the cranium and face, like the nose, auricle, orbit, and surrounding tissues, as well as miss

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of maxillofacial defects is challenging due to the region's complex anatomy. During the COVID-19 era, many patients lost their maxilla and chewing efficiency as a result of Mucormycosis. In such cases, custom-designed implants offer a graftless solution for seemingly hopeless situations. This case report aims at miraculous dental transformation utilizing the Patient Specific Implant (PSI) approach.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 64-year-old male patient presented to the Prosthodontics Department with the chief complaint of missing teeth. He had been struggling with chewing fo

BACKGROUND: This study evaluates surgical outcomes and survival rates of implants placed in a multidisciplinary implant teaching programme.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all implant surgery performed over a 6-year period by accredited oral and maxillofacial surgery trainees at the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne was undertaken. Patients were reviewed for a minimum of 6 months post-implant placement. Implant survival was defined as those implants which were not removed, were clinically integrated as assessed by torque testing and in an appropriate position to receive a subsequent prost

Background/Objectives: Defects in maxillary and mandibular continuity are common in maxillofacial practice. They can occur after trauma, osteonecrosis, congenital jaw deformities, or surgical resection of benign or malignant tumours. Reconstruction with microvascular bone flaps and subsequent prosthetic rehabilitation is considered the contemporary first line treatment. This study assessed the extent to which the underlying disease influences the treatment course of microvascular segmental jaw reconstruction. Methods: A retrospective review of prospectively collected data from all patients who

UNLABELLED: In this fourth and final paper on the management of patients with congenitally missing teeth, the use of dental implants is considered. This group of patients often provides unique challenges when implant reconstruction is considered. Often a multidisciplinary approach is required involving orthodontists, oral surgeons and restorative dentists. The use of dental implant systems is a rapidly developing area of dentistry and its implications on hypodontia are discussed. This paper identifies the problems associated with a congenital absence of teeth and addresses their management in

Oral cancer may affect up to 275 000 new patients per year worldwide. Many of these will be disfigured by the destruction of tissue within the face and head area. Maxillofacial prosthodontics can play a vital role in restoring such patients to a semblance of normality in appearance and function. This article will describe the role of maxillofacial prosthodontics in the treatment of these oral cancer patients.

The functional restoration of Brown class III maxillary defects is a challenging endeavour in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Conventional reconstruction techniques with osseous free flaps have certain limitations, such as the need for multiple operations and greater patient morbidity. This study introduces a single-stage computer-assisted approach for tumour resection and functional restoration of these defects using titanium mesh, zygomatic implants, and a vascularized anterolateral thigh flap (ALTF). Virtual surgical planning was used to simulate tumour resection, titanium mesh placement, a
