May-Thurner syndrome (MTS) consists of common iliac vein compression from an extrinsic source. Patients with MTS can present with a variety of symptoms, potentially making the diagnosis difficult. Classically, MTS will result in left iliac vein compression from the right iliac artery. In rare cases, it can be secondarily caused by compression from other anatomic structures in the pelvis. We present the case of a 43-year-old woman with MTS with iliofemoral deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism caused by a large uterine leiomyoma. Our findings underscore the need to consider various etiolo

May-Thurner syndrome (MTS) is an underdiagnosed cause of lower limb deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The clinical prevalence of MTS-related DVT is likely underestimated, particularly in patients with other more recognisable risk factors. MTS is classically described in females between the age group of 20-50 years. In patients with acute iliofemoral thrombosis, medical treatment with anticoagulation alone has been associated with higher risk of postthrombotic syndrome (PTS) and lower iliofemoral patency rates, as compared to endovascular correction. We describe a case of MTS-related extensive iliofe

May-Thurner syndrome most commonly involves compression of the left common iliac vein by the right common iliac artery and can result in leg pain and swelling as well as potentially precipitate deep venous thrombosis. These symptoms can be exacerbated by additional vascular abnormalities. This is a case report of a 91-year-old woman with intractable massive left lower extremity edema that interfered with walking. She was diagnosed with concurrent May-Thurner syndrome and pelvic arteriovenous fistula. Treatment with embolization of the fistula and stenting of the left common iliac vein relieved

BACKGROUND: Embolic occlusion of intracranial vessels can be caused by material arising proximally, most commonly from the heart, the aorta, or the carotid or vertebral arteries, and rarely from systemic veins. May-Thurner syndrome is an uncommon condition in which there is impaired venous return because of compression of the left common iliac vein by the overlying right common iliac artery, resulting in iliofemoral deep venous thrombosis.
OBJECTIVE: To describe a young patient with presumed paradoxical embolism to the basilar apex associated with a patent foramen ovale and May-Thurner syndro

BACKGROUND: For women with left common iliac vein compression (ie, May-Thurner syndrome) who undergo venous stenting and subsequently become pregnant, concerns have been raised regarding a possible compromise of stent patency due to compression from the gravid uterus and the hypercoagulability induced by pregnancy. Only a small body of literature exists on this subject, and limited management guidelines are available. The present study was designed to evaluate the safety of iliac vein stenting for May-Thurner syndrome (MTS) with subsequent pregnancy.
METHODS: Female patients who had undergone

PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate the incidence, etiology, treatment, and clinical course of atypical iliac vein compressions (AIVCs) among patients with May-Thurner syndrome (MTS).
METHODS: A total of 173 patients who presented with MTS were retrospectively analyzed at a single center. Computed tomographic venography (CTV) was used to diagnose MTS. An AIVC was defined as the compression of the left common iliac vein (LCIV) by structures other than the right common iliac artery (RCIA) or the compression of other venous structures in the pelvic cavity instead of the LCIV. The patients with AIVC

BACKGROUND: May-Thurner syndrome (MTS) or Cockett's syndrome is a rare clinical syndrome, which refers to the compression of the left common iliac vein (LCIV) by right common iliac artery and vertebral body. Complications of MTS include deep vein thrombus formation and even life-threatening pulmonary embolism.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report the case of a 60-year-old female patient with a complaint of swelling in the left lower limb and pain for 5 days. Computed tomography angiography indicated MTS, and thrombus formation of left external iliac vein and femoral vein. The patient was diagno

May-Thurner syndrome (MTS) is a rare condition in which patients develop iliofemoral deep venous thrombosis owing to an anatomic variant in which the right common iliac artery overlies and compresses the left common iliac vein against the lumbar spine. Data regarding lower extremity trauma in patients with previously diagnosed MTS are rare. We discuss the operative approach for ankle trauma occurring 3 weeks after endovascular surgery for the treatment of MTS.

The association of cerebral ischemic attack with patent foramen ovale has not been extensively studied, and frequently the site of origin of embolism is not detected despite routine studies. We present the case of a young patient with ischemic stroke and permeable oval foramen in the context of May Thurner syndrome. The May Thurner syndrome is an entity scarcely studied in the medical literature and it has also been infrequently related to ischemic vascular cerebral accident, but in patients with permeable oval foramen without evidence of the emboligen source, it is interesting to rule it out

May-Thurner syndrome is a rare clinical entity involving venous obstruction of the left lower extremity. The May-Thurner syndrome is a phenomenon commonly described as an acquired stenosis of the left common iliac vein secondary to compression of the left common iliac vein between the right common iliac artery and the underlying vertebral body. We report one case of May-Thurner syndrome, and another rare case of reverse May-Thurner syndrome, incidently detected during intervention, in a case of aortic stenosis and mitral stenosis with dextrocardia and situs inversus.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the effect of various endovascular interventions on the clinical manifestations of the pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS) caused by May-Thurner syndrome (MTS).
METHODS: The study included 12 female patients with PCS caused by MTS. Patients were examined by duplex ultrasound, computed tomography of the pelvic veins, and ovarian and pelvic venography. All 12 patients underwent endovascular stenting of the left common iliac vein (CIV), and 10 of them underwent subsequent endovascular embolization of the left gonadal vein. The indication for sten

An 18-year-old female presented to the emergency department with progressive bilateral lower extremity pain and swelling. She reported a two-week history of back pain radiating down both legs, initially treated with steroids and muscle relaxants without improvement. Initial imaging, including an MRI and hip X-rays, was unremarkable. She subsequently developed worsening left leg swelling, prompting further evaluation for deep vein thrombosis (DVT). She had no history of oral contraceptive use, recent travel, surgery, or prolonged immobility. A family history of "thick blood" in her mother and a

We present two clinical cases of successful endovascular treatment of proximal deep vein thrombosis following May-Thurner syndrome. In the first case, 2-day regional catheter thrombolysis, percutaneous mechanical thrombectomy and venous stenting were required to restore hemodynamics in the left lower limb. In the second case, regional catheter thrombolysis continued for 3 days with subsequent thrombotic mass lysis. However, iliac vein was severely narrowed that required venous stenting. Long-term results were favorable in both cases. Venous outflow has become almost normal after endovascular t

Deep venous thrombosis is a significant medical condition that results in life-threatening complications such as pulmonary embolism. Various factors can contribute to the formation of deep venous thrombosis, including prolonged immobility, surgery, and specific health conditions. May-Thurner syndrome is an underrecognized cause of deep venous thrombosis due to the compression of the left common iliac vein by the right common iliac artery. It poses diagnostic challenges due to its varied clinical presentations. This report discusses a 42-year-old female with no notable medical history who prese

May-Thurner syndrome (MTS) is a venous outflow obstruction disorder characterized by compression of the left common iliac vein by an overriding right common iliac artery. MTS primarily affects young to middle-aged women, although many patients remain entirely asymptomatic. Anatomic variations of MTS, while uncommon, have been described. Treatment usually involves endovascular management, including thrombolysis and/or thrombectomy with or without inferior vena cava filter placement, followed by angioplasty and stenting of the left common iliac vein. We report a unique case of a 31-year-old woma

PURPOSE: With the increase in the incidence of venous thrombosis, interest in May-Thurner syndrome (MTS) accompanying iliac vein compression has increased. Some patients with MTS have inferior vena cava thrombosis or thrombosis beyond iliac vein stenosis (TBIVS). This study aimed to identify the characteristics of MTS with TBIVS including pulmonary embolism (PE) and post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) compared to those of MTS without TBIVS.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-five patients with deep vein thrombosis associated with MTS were treated between March 2012 and February 2016. Demographic data,

We report a 53-year-old female patient presenting with a refractory venous leg ulcer and unremarkable findings in the doppler Ultrasound venous mapping of the leg veins. Further comprehensive diagnostics demonstrated an underlying May-Thurner syndrome. After resolution of the primary mechanical obstruction, rapid wound healing in the following 3 weeks was documented. Iliac vein compression syndrome, commonly known as May-Thurner syndrome, is a distinguishable anatomical variant that results from an external compression over the left iliac vein exerted by the overriding adjacent right common il
