Improving meat inspection and control in resource-poor communities: the Nepal example.

Meat is an important source of protein and a valuable commodity in resource-poor communities. In many developing countries, lack of appropriate slaughtering facilities and unsatisfactory slaughtering techniques are causing unnecessary losses of meat as well as invaluable by-products from animal carcasses. Slaughtering places are frequently contaminated and may not be protected against dogs, rodents and insects. Meat products coming from such conditions are often deteriorated due to bacterial infection or contaminated, which may cause food poisoning or diseases in consumers. In many developing

[Zoonotic infections in persons working in plants producing meat and bone meal].

The present study has revealed that persons working at offal and bone processing plants show no specific pathology, peculiar to such plants, in the state of their health and severe mass diseases among these persons are absent. Nevertheless, rather frequent occurrence of erysipeloid should be noted. The survey of workers employed at different stages of the production process has revealed the presence of ornithosis, listeriosis and leptospirosis infections. No clinically manifest cases of these diseases have been detected. The infection of individual workers occurs in the process of production a

[Legionellosis in meat-packing combines of the Lithuanian SSR].

The article presents the results of a study of Legionella pneumophila morbidity in Lithuanian meat-processing factory workers, as well as the specific position of legionellosis in the fever diseases structure among the workers of the industry. The technique showed that Legionella pneumophila 1st serogroup seropositive reaction was traced among the healthy workers in 0.2% (antibody titer 1:64). Rather high percentage (7.1%) of persons with specific antibodies was found among those who had suffered the fever disease 6 month before the examination. Among 191 fever patients examined, in 35 (18.3%)

In-Depth Longitudinal Study of Listeria monocytogenes ST9 Isolates from the Meat Processing Industry: Resolving Diversity and Transmission Patterns Using Whole-Genome Sequencing.

Listeria monocytogenes is a pathogen mostly associated with the consumption of ready-to-eat foods and can cause severe disease and death. It can be introduced into food chains from raw materials, but often the contamination source is the food production environment, where certain clones can persist for years. In the meat chain, ST9 is one of the most commonly encountered L. monocytogenes sequence types, and for effective source tracking, the divergence and spread of ST9 must be understood. In this study, whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was used to characterize and track 252 L. monocytogenes ST9

Zoonoses in the meat industry: a review.

Zoonoses are diseases, the infections of which can be transmitted between man and animals. Only a few are of importance with respect to poultry meat and meat from cattle, sheep, horses and goats. Advances in the control of diseases such as tuberculosis, brucellosis and trichinosis in animals have reduced the hazards posed to workers in the meat industry and to consumers of meat. However, inspection of animals ante- and post-mortem cannot detect all infectious agents present. This applies particularly to bacteria such as Campylobacter, Salmonella, verotoxigenic and other pathogenic Escherichia

Associations of processing level variables with Salmonella prevalence and concentration on broiler chicken carcasses and parts in Canada.

A national baseline study was conducted between December 2012 and December 2013 to determine the pre-packaging prevalence and concentration of foodborne pathogens on broiler chicken carcasses and parts at processing; a survey was implemented simultaneously to collect data on the processing practices used to control these pathogens. Thirty federally-registered Canadian poultry processing establishments completed the questionnaire. A total of 2,732 samples of carcasses and parts (breast and thigh pieces) were collected over the study period from these establishments. For Salmonella, the overall

Is depression a risk factor for meatpacking injuries?

BACKGROUND: While meatpacking is a physically demanding industry, the effect of depression on risks for injury has not been studied. OBJECTIVE: To assess depressive disorders (major depression and dysthymia) using a validated screening tool administered to injured and uninjured meatpacking workers in two Midwestern plants. METHODS: Matched case-control analyses were conducted among 134 workers to evaluate the association between depressive disorder and the occurrence of laceration injury. RESULTS: Of the 268 workers, 13.8% screened positive for depressive disorder, whereas the general popul

Leptospirosis in Western Australia, 1983-1984.

The diagnosis of leptospirosis is often difficult to make because of vague and mild symptoms. Patients who present with a "flu-like" illness and who have had either direct or indirect contact with infected animals should be investigated by serological examination. In Western Australia during 1983 and 1984, the sera of 937 patients were tested for the presence of leptospiral antibodies. Of these, 131 gave positive results; in 45, these were consistent with recently acquired infection. Apart from one veterinary worker, all the cases that were diagnosed serologically occurred in farmers and meatw

Yersinia enterocolitica: a brief review of the issues relating to the zoonotic pathogen, public health challenges, and the pork production chain.

Yersinia enterocolitica is a zoonotic agent that causes gastrointestinal disease in humans, as well as reactive arthritis and erythema nodosum. Enteropathogenic Yersinia are the etiological agents for yersiniosis, which can be acquired through the consumption of contaminated foods. As porcine animals are the main carriers of Y. enterocolitica, food safety measures to minimize human infection are of increasing interest to the scientific and medical community. In this review, we examine why it is imperative that information on the reservoirs, prevalence, virulence, and ability of this pathogen t

Translocation and cross-contamination of E. coli O157 in beef eye-of-round subprimal cuts processed with high-pressure needleless injection.

UNLABELLED: High-pressure needleless injection (HPNI) is an emerging enhancing process where small-diameter, high-velocity bursts of liquid penetrate soft foods at pressures up to 69 MPa. The incidence and depth of translocated surface-inoculated E. coli O157 in HPNI-processed beef eye-of-round subprimal cuts was determined. HPNI translocated E. coli O157 from the surface to the interior of the eye-of-round subprimal cuts with incidence of 40% (± 7%), 25% (± 8%), and 25% (± 8)% for subprimals that had been surface-inoculated with a 4-strain cocktail at 0.5, 1, and 2 log₁₀ CFU/cm² , respectivel

Prevalence and serotypes of Listeria monocytogenes contamination in Chinese beef processing plants.

The aim of this work was to study the epidemiology of Listeria spp., particularly Listeria monocytogenes, and to identify the serotypes present in contaminated samples from beef processing plants in China. A total of 439 samples were obtained from bovine feces, hides, and carcasses at three commercial processing plants. A standard protocol (ISO 11290-1) was followed to detect Listeria spp. and L. monocytogenes, and multiplex polymerase chain reaction was used to identify the various L. monocytogenes serotypes. The overall prevalences of Listeria spp. and L. monocytogenes were 65.6% and 26.4%,

Neoliberal Governance and Agribusiness Influence: Public Health Policymaking and the Risk to Meatpacking Workers During COVID-19.

In this article, we examine how neoliberal governance, corporate influence and public health policy intersected during the COVID-19 pandemic in one meatpacking town we call Cattleford. We focus on two research questions: (1) In what ways did the political power of agribusiness shape local-level public health policymaking around meatpacking during COVID-19? and (2) how did neoliberalised governance mechanisms influence public health policies during the COVID-19 pandemic? Utilising 39 in-depth interviews, we found that Cattleford's public health approach was heavily influenced by pro-business, l

Band-like opacity in the corneas of abattoir-acquired pig eyes.

In the course of an investigation into the distribution of immune cells in the porcine cornea, a band-like lesion on the cornea of two-thirds of the eyes acquired from the local abattoir was noted. Histological investigations revealed an area of corneal epithelium debridement with no obvious other pathological changes. Discussions with abattoir staff soon revealed the cause of the lesions to be the scalding process that all pig carcasses undergo immediately post-mortem that serves to remove unwanted hair and reduce skin-dwelling bacterial contamination. We concluded that the band-like opacity

An outbreak of psittacosis in Minnesota turkey industry workers: implications for modes of transmission and control.

From June through November 1986, an outbreak of psittacosis occurred in turkey industry workers in central Minnesota. A total of 186 suspect cases were identified, and 122 cases (66%) were serologically confirmed. Cases occurred in three turkey processing plants, two rendering plants, one farm, and one "further processing" plant (where meat is removed from previously eviscerated carcasses and consumer products, such as roasts, are made). As in previous outbreaks, workers exposed to the viscera of infected birds were at greatest risk of becoming infected. However, our data showed that 31 (25%)

Analysis of Q fever in Uruguay.

The first outbreak of Q fever in Uruguay occurred in 1956. The infection, which is caused by Coxiella burnetti, occurs in sheep, cattle, swine, and horses, but not in fowl or guinea pig. Most of the cases studied have been traced to cattle. Fourteen outbreaks of this disease were studied between 1975 and 1985. All of the 1,358 clinically suspected cases (814 serologically confirmed) reported in Uruguay occurred in workers at meat-processing plants. Diagnoses of cases and serologic surveys were made by use of complement fixation, capillary agglutination, and layer microagglutination techniques.
