Impact of the sintering parameters on the grain size, crystal phases, translucency, biaxial flexural strength, and fracture load of zirconia materials.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the influence of the zirconia and sintering parameters on the optical and mechanical properties. METHODS: Three zirconia materials (3/4Y-TZP, 4Y-TZP, 3Y-TZP) were high-speed (HSS), speed (SS) or conventionally (CS) sintered. Disc-shaped specimens nested in 4 vertical layers of the blank were examined for grain size (GS), crystal phases (c/t'/t/m-phase), translucency (T), and biaxial flexural strength. Fracture load (FL) of three-unit fixed dental prostheses was determined initially and after thermomechanical aging. Fracture types were classified, and data statistica

Sensitivity of cartilage mechanical behaviour to spatial variations in material properties.

Articular cartilage tissue exhibits a spatial dependence in material properties that govern mechanical behaviour. A mathematical model of cartilage tissue under one dimensional confined compression testing is developed for normal tissue that takes account of these variations in material properties. Modifications to the model representative of a selection of mechanisms driving osteoarthritic cartilage are proposed, allowing application of the model to both physiological and pathophysiological, osteoarthritic tissue. Incorporating spatial variations into the model requires the specification of m

Articular cartilage fatigue causes frequency-dependent softening and crack extension.

Soft biological polymers, such as articular cartilage, possess exceptional fracture and fatigue resistance, offering inspiration for the development of novel materials. However, we lack a detailed understanding of changes in cartilage material behavior and of crack propagation following cyclic compressive loading. We investigated the structure and mechanical behavior of cartilage as a function of loading frequency and number of cycles. Microcracks were initiated in cartilage samples using microindentation, then cracks were extended under cyclic compression. Thickness, apparent stiffness, energ

Plastic strain localization in Bouligand structures.

The Bouligand structure represents helicoidal stacking of aligned fibers; such a structure is widely observed in biological composites. Despite the progress in characterization of toughening caused by Bouligand arrangement of fibers, the inelastic deformation mechanisms of this structure remain elusive. In this study, we carry out calculations for plastic deformation of Bouligand structure, crossed-lamellar structure and the single lamellar structure. It is found that the single lamellar structure and crossed-lamellar structure can undergo necking, while in the Bouligand structure, plastic str

Biomechanical testing of virtual meniscus implants made from a bi-phasic silk fibroin-based hydrogel and polyurethane via finite element analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the suitability of different material compositions and structural designs for 3D-printed meniscus implants using finite element analysis (FEA) to improve joint function after meniscal injury and guide future implant development. DESIGN: This experimental study involved in-silico testing of a meniscus model developed from two materials: a specially formulated hydrogel composed of silk fibroin (SF), gelatine, and decellularized meniscus-derived extracellular matrix (MD-dECM), and polyurethane (PU) with stiffness levels of 54 and 205 MPa. Both single-material implants a

The mechanical importance of myelination in the central nervous system.

Neurons in the central nervous system are surrounded and cross-linked by myelin, a fatty white substance that wraps around axons to create an electrically insulating layer. The electrical function of myelin is widely recognized; yet, its mechanical importance remains underestimated. Here we combined nanoindentation testing and histological staining to correlate brain stiffness to the degree of myelination in immature, pre-natal brains and mature, post-natal brains. We found that both gray and white matter tissue stiffened significantly (p≪0.001) upon maturation: the gray matter stiffness doubl

Simulation of finite deformation failure in soft biological tissues by a mixed local and nonlocal gradient damage approach.

This study introduces an anisotropic energy limiter-based gradient damage framework designed to predict the failure of soft biological tissues under finite deformations. Traditional damage models often struggle with these materials due to their complex, anisotropic microstructures and highly nonlinear behavior. The proposed framework addresses these challenges by incorporating an anisotropic energy limiter function to control local damage evolution and a gradient-enhanced formulation that ensures mesh-independent results through a rate-dependent damage evolution law that accounts for the loadi

Impact of the hen egg size on its fracture point measuring the eggshell deformation.

A digital holographic interferometer is used to measure surface deformation and fracture points in hen eggs under mechanical compression. All samples were subjected to a constant compression load until they fractured. Three different tests are performed to analyze the eggs' mechanical response. In the first test, the egg is vertically oriented, and so the applied load; meanwhile, for the second test, the egg is horizontally oriented with the load applied vertically. The third test keeps the egg horizontal, but on this occasion, the applied load is also horizontal. As the mechanical load is app

Topological optimization and biomechanical analysis of porous fusion cage with TPMS structures.

Porous fusion cages present a promising alternative to traditional solid fusion cages in anterior cervical decompression and fusion surgery (ACDF), offering improved bone in growth through interconnectivity and a reduced elastic modulus, which may reduce the risk of cage subsidence. This study employs an integrated topology optimization approach to design a novel porous fusion cage to minimize the risk associated with cage subsidence and stress shielding. Two innovative porous cervical fusion implants, RPF-G and RPF-D, were proposed through Boolean operations based on optimal topological struc

Biomechanical effect of interspinous process distraction height after lumbar fixation surgery: An in vitro model.

Pedicle screw fixation may induce abnormal activity at adjacent segment and accelerate the degeneration of lumbar vertebrae. Dynamic stabilizers could provide an intermediate solution between conservative treatment and fusion surgery. Lumbar vertebral segment cephalad to instrumented fixation was the most common localization of adjacent segment degeneration. The aim of this study is to explore the use of interspinous process devices in the lumbar vertebral segment cephalad to fixation segment in changing the mechanical distribution and limiting abnormal activity of the spine. Eight specimens w

Fracture toughening of peritubular microstructure in biological porous dentine.

Fracture behavior of biological porous dentine is important to the success of dental restoration. The role of peritubular dentine (PTD) microstructure on the fracture properties of human dentine is investigated by analysis of its crack tip shielding effect on microcracks and macrocracks. The evolution of microcracks around the dentine tubules (DTs) and the growth of macrocracks in the dentine are experimentally observed by scanning electron microscope. Two cases of an individual PTD&DT penetrating the microcrack tip and locating ahead of the microcrack tip are discussed. The effects of multipl

A finite element study of the effect of cross-link stabilisation in a lumbar spine tumour model.

Spinal metastases can increase the risks of vertebral fracture due to bony destruction and instability in the spine. There are concerns that cross-links may impair adjuvant treatments, such as radiotherapy and proton beam therapy. The aim of this study was to assess the biomechanical effects of cross-link stabilisation for a growing tumour in order to provide recommendations on the use and placement of the cross-link. A finite element (FE) model of a fixation device was developed. The device was inserted virtually into a FE model of the lumbar spine (L1-S1) between L2 and L4. Tumour deposit of

Biomechanical evaluation of plate positioning in ulnar shortening osteotomy for nonunion prevention.

Ulnar shortening osteotomy (USO) is a commonly used technique for treating ulnar impaction syndrome (UIS), but nonunion remains a non-negligible complication. Currently, there is still no consensus on the best surgical protocol to prevent nonunion. There are limited studies on plate placement, which is a key factor influencing the mechanical environment at the osteotomy site. In this study, finite element analysis (FEA) was used to investigate the biomechanical differences between volar and dorsal plate fixation in USO. The results showed that the volar-side plate model demonstrated superior i

Therapeutic radiation directly alters bone fatigue strength and microdamage accumulation.

Radiotherapy (RTx) is an essential and efficacious oncologic treatment, however, post-RTx bone fragility fractures present a challenging clinical problem. Cancer survivors treated with RTx are at variable risk for these late-onset, complex fragility fractures. Little data exists regarding the effects of RTx on bone fatigue properties despite the likelihood of fatigue loading as a mechanism leading up to atraumatic fracture. In this study, femurs collected from adult male rats were irradiated ex vivo with a therapeutic dose of x-irradiation (20 Gy), and then fatigued using a three-point bend se

Methodology to identify subject-specific dynamic laxity tests to stretch individual parts of knee ligaments.

The mechanical properties of ligaments are important for multiple applications and are often estimated from laxity tests. However, the typical laxity tests are not optimized for this application and, a potential exists to develop better laxity tests in this respect. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop a methodology to identify optimal, dynamic laxity tests that isolate the stretch of the individual ligaments from each other. To this end, we applied an existing rigid body-based knee model and a dataset of ∼100.000 random samples of applied forces (0-150 N), moments (0-10 Nm) and

The effects of knee support on the sagittal lower-body joint kinematics and kinetics of deep squats.

UNLABELLED: Little work has been done to examine the deep squat position (>130° sagittal knee flexion). In baseball and softball, catchers perform this squat an average of 146 times per nine-inning game. To alleviate some of the stress on their knees caused by this repetitive loading, some catchers wear foam knee supports. OBJECTIVES: This work quantifies the effects of knee support on lower-body joint kinematics and kinetics in the deep squat position. METHODS: Subjects in this study performed the deep squat with no support, foam support, and instrumented support. In order to measure the fo

Nondestructive Assessment of Growing Rat Tibial Mechanical Properties Under Three-Point Bending: A Microcomputed Tomography Based Finite Element Study.

Microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) based finite element models (FEM) are efficient tools to assess bone mechanical properties. Although they have been developed for different animal models, there is still a lack of data for growing rat long bone models. This study aimed at developing and calibrating voxel-based FEMs using micro-CT scans and experimental data. Twenty-four tibiae were extracted from rats aged 28, 56, and 84 days old (d.o.) (n = 8/group), and their stiffness values were evaluated using three-point bending tests. Prior to testing, tibiae were scanned, reconstructed, and converted

Sequential irradiation does not improve fatigue crack propagation resistance of human cortical bone at 15 kGy.

Sequential irradiation has been advocated for mitigating the reduction in fatigue properties of tendon compared to a single dose. However, to our knowledge, its capability of mitigating fatigue losses in bone is unknown. Recently, we reported that sequential irradiation did not mitigate losses in high-cycle S-N fatigue life of cortical bone at 15 kGy; however, it is unclear if sequential irradiation provides a benefit to fatigue crack propagation resistance. Our previous study also showed that radiation-induced collagen chain fragmentation and crosslinking increased from 0 to 15 kGy, suggestin

Mechanical Consequence of Induced Intervertebral Disc Degeneration in the SPARC-Null Mouse.

Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration is associated with low back pain (LBP) and accompanied by mechanical changes to the spine. Secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC) is a protein that contributes to the functioning and maintenance of the extracellular matrix. SPARC-null mice display accelerated IVD degeneration and pain-associated behaviors. This study examined if SPARC-null mice also display altered spine mechanics as compared to wild-type (WT) mice. Lumbar spines from SPARC-null (n = 36) and WT (n = 18) mice aged 14-25 months were subjected to cyclic axial tension and compre

Enhancing the Mechanical Properties of Electrospun Nanofiber Mats through Controllable Welding at the Cross Points.

This communication describes a simple and effective method for welding electrospun nanofibers at the cross points to enhance the mechanical properties of their nonwoven mats. The welding is achieved by placing a nonwoven mat of the nanofibers in a capped vial with the vapor of a proper solvent. For polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers, the solvent is dichloromethane (DCM). The welding can be managed in a controllable fashion by simply varying the partial pressure of DCM and/or the exposure time. Relative to the pristine nanofiber mat, the mechanical strength of the welded PCL nanofiber mat can be
