Effects of media exposure on PTSD symptoms in college students during the COVID-19 outbreak.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the influence of media on college students' mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: After the COVID-19 outbreak, we used cross-sectional surveys through online questionnaires to investigate the mental health of college students in lockdown at home. We identified the influencing factors of PTSD symptoms using the Chi-Square test and ordinal logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: In 10,989 valid questionnaires, 9,906 college students with no PTSD symptoms, 947 college students with subclinical PTSD symptoms (1-3 items), and 136 college students w

Exposure to radiologic contrast media and an increased risk of treated end-stage renal disease.

BACKGROUND: Radiologic contrast media can cause acute renal failure, but whether their repeated use is associated with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is unknown. METHODS: We compared 716 incident case subjects of treated ESRD with 361 control subjects, frequency matched on age, drawn from the general population (age, 20-65 years). Participants were interviewed by telephone regarding their previous exposure (before initiation of dialysis for case subjects and the study interview for control subject) to various imaging procedures. RESULTS: As expected, the case subjects reported having more im

Patterns of ENDS-Related Content Exposure on Social Media Among US Adolescents and Young Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Many US adolescents and young adults (AYA) are exposed to electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS)-related content regularly through social media platforms. Prior research treats exposure to ENDS-related content as uniform, both in its source and theme. METHODS: This study examined the variation in frequency, source, and theme of ENDS-related content online among AYA (ages 12-25), using the nationally representative Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study Wave 7 (2022/23) data. Latent class analysis was used to identify patterns of ENDS-related content exposu

Keeping Employees Safe During Health Crises: The Effects of Media Exposure, HR Practices, and Age.

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a rare, late detected developmental disorder associated with severe deficits in the speech-language domain. Despite a few reports about atypicalities in the speech-language development of infants and toddlers with RTT, a detailed analysis of the pre-linguistic vocalisation repertoire of infants with RTT is yet missing. Based on home video recordings, we analysed the vocalisations between 9 and 11 months of age of three female infants with typical RTT and compared them to three age-matched typically developing (TD) female controls. The video material of the infants had a

Risk factors for persistent middle-ear effusions. Otitis media, catarrh, cigarette smoke exposure, and atopy.

To ascertain risk factors for persistent middle-ear effusions (PMEE), we interviewed the parents of two groups of children. The first consisted of 76 children with PMEE who were admitted to the hospital for tympanostomy-tube insertion. The second, a control group, consisted of 76 children admitted for other types of surgery, who were matched for age, sex, season, and surgical ward. Nearly all (97%) of the children admitted for insertion of tympanostomy tubes had one or more episodes of suppurative otitis media. Only 59% of the control children had previous ear infections. Frequent ear infectio

Using Exogenous Social Media Exposure Measures to Assess the Effects of Smokeless Tobacco-Related Social Media Content on Smokeless Tobacco Sales in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Prior research on the effects of social media promotion of tobacco products has predominantly relied on survey-based self-report measures of marketing exposure, which potentially introduce endogeneity, recall, and selection biases. New approaches can enhance measurement and help better understand the effects of exposure to tobacco-related messages in a dynamic social media marketing environment. We used geolocation-specific tweet rate as an exogenous indicator of exposure to smokeless tobacco (ST)-related content and employed this measure to examine the influence of social media

Insights on Media Alcohol Exposure Following Daily Self-Monitoring: Strategies for Prevention and Intervention in Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent exposure to alcohol-related media content is widespread and may contribute to early initiation and risky patterns of use. Using a sample of participants who self-monitored their alcohol exposure during adolescence, the aim of this qualitative study was to gain their perspectives on alcohol-related media exposure, its perceived influence, and potential strategies to mitigate associated risks. METHODS: Adolescents aged 15-18 were enrolled into a multi-burst (21 day bursts) ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study based on prior alcohol involvement (any lifetime use or

Mechanism of CuSO4 cytotoxicity in goat erythrocytes after high-level in vitro exposure to isotonic media.

Copper (Cu) is a common environmental pollutant in nature. Cu-poisoning can cause liver damage and erythrocytes hemolysis. To evaluate the effect of CuSO4 poisoning on the morphological and functional characteristics of goat red blood cells. Five 10-14-month-old goats were selected for jugular vein blood sampling to obtain erythrocytes, and then the erythrocytes were processed with different concentrations (0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 μmol/L) of CuSO4 for 48 h, and 40 μmol/L doses CuSO4 incubated for different time (12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 h) to process erythrocytes. We observed the changes in eryt

From social media exposure to disordered eating: mechanisms, risks and protective factors in children and adolescents.

Social media (SM) has emerged as an important environmental context associated with children's and adolescents' eating behaviors, body image and psychological well-being, fueled by the proliferation of visual and appearance-focused content. Trends such as "thinspiration" and "fitspiration" have been widely linked to the internalization of unrealistic body ideals and higher levels of body dissatisfaction, particularly among adolescent girls. Concurrently, exposure to digital marketing of high-fat, sugar and salt (HFSS) foods has been associated with less healthy nutritional preferences and diet

Impact of mother's mass media exposure on early childhood development in pakistan: urban vs. rural analysis.

BACKGROUND: Mothers play a pivotal role in early childhood development (ECD), and mass media serves as a key channel for shaping maternal knowledge and practices. OBJECTIVE: This study examines how maternal exposure to five types of mass media-newspapers, radio, television, internet, and mobile phones-affects ECD outcomes in Pakistan, with a focus on rural-urban disparities. METHODS: We used nationally representative data from the 2014 and 2018 waves of Pakistan's Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS), analyzing 73,866 children aged 3-4 years. ECD was assessed across four domains: physica

Exposure to family planning messages on social media and its association with maternal healthcare services in Mauritania.

BACKGROUND: Mauritania, a lower-middle-income country in Northwest Africa, has one of the highest maternal and infant mortality rates worldwide and struggles to ensure optimal use of maternal healthcare services. Raising health awareness through family planning messages can promote maternal healthcare use, potentially reducing preventable maternal and child mortalities. The objective of the study was to assess the potential impact of exposure to family planning messages through social media on the utilization of maternal healthcare services among Mauritanian women. METHODS: Data from the 2019

Systems perspectives on pediatric otitis media: environmental exposures, genetic susceptibility, and biomarker-guided interventions.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric otitis media remains one of the most common childhood diseases worldwide and is a major cause of hearing impairment, recurrent healthcare utilization, and antibiotic exposure. Its pathogenesis is highly heterogeneous and can no longer be adequately explained by a traditional single-pathogen model. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to synthesize current evidence on the roles of environmental exposures, host genetic susceptibility, biomarkers, and microbial factors in pediatric otitis media, with particular emphasis on their interactions and translational relevance. Idiosyncratic media exposures during a pandemic and their link to well-being, cognition, and behavior over time.

Over the past two decades of research, increased media consumption in the context of collective traumas has been cross-sectionally and longitudinally linked to negative psychological outcomes. However, little is known about the specific information channels that may drive these patterns of response. The current longitudinal investigation uses a probability-based sample of 5,661 Americans measured at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic to identify a) distinct patterns of information-channel use (i.e., dimensions) for COVID-related information, b) demographic correlates of these patterns, and c)

The association between exposure to antibiotics in the first week of life and later otitis media: The INCA study.

UNLABELLED: Otitis media (OM) is one of the most common diagnoses in preschool-age children. Its pathophysiology is poorly understood, but is associated with changes in the nasopharyngeal microbiome, immune system, and presence of allergies. These, in turn, can be affected by early-life antibiotic exposure. Therefore, this study aimed to determine if antibiotic treatment in the first week of life in children born at term was associated with acute otitis media (AOM) and otitis media with effusion (OME) in the first 4-6 years of life. METHODS: A prospective birth cohort of 436 term-born infants

Consequences of exposure to the thin ideal in mass media depend on moderators in young women: An experimental study.

This study examined the consequences of media exposure to thin ideals compared to pictures of landscapes in healthy young women and women with eating and mixed mental disorders and investigated whether appearance-related cognitive factors and cognitive distortions moderate the effects. Two hundred seventy-five women in a multisite laboratory trial (174 in- or outpatients and 101 healthy women; Mage 22.87 years, SD = 3.94) were exposed to either thin ideals or to landscape pictures and guided through a vivid imagery of these pictures thereafter. Changes in body image dissatisfaction, mood, eati

Exposure to and engagement with gambling marketing in social media: Reported impacts on moderate-risk and problem gamblers.

Digital advertising for gambling and specifically marketing via social media have increased in recent years, and the impact on vulnerable consumers, including moderate-risk and problem gamblers, is unknown. Social media promotions often fall outside of advertising restrictions and codes of conduct and may have an inequitable effect on susceptible gamblers. This study aimed to investigate recall of exposure to, and reported impact on gamblers of, gambling promotions and marketing content on social media, with a focus on vulnerable users currently experiencing gambling problems.
