We report a case of a 58-year-old woman who had a bronchogenic cyst presenting with pericardial effusion. Initially, the effusion had disappeared prior to resection of the cyst, but it reappeared with additional symptoms. Resection of the bronchogenic cyst resulted in complete resolution of the pericardial effusion and additional symptoms such as progressive dyspnea and chest pain. Application of surgical treatment for asymptomatic cysts in adults remains controversial, but we recommend that mediastinal cysts which present with any symptoms should be resected at the time of their discovery, ev

Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection that is remains endemic in many countries, particularly the Middle East and Central Asia. Mediastinal hydatidosis is very rare (less than 0.1% of all hydatid disease cases) that have been only anecdotally in the literature. To the best of our knowledge only one case of multiple mediastineal hydatid cysts has been reported previously. We report the second cases of multiple mediastineal hydatid cysts and recommend that it can be considered in the differential diagnosis of multiple cystic mediastineal masses in endemic countries.

Mediastinal parathyroid cyst is a rare cause of space occupying lesion in the mediastinum. No specific symptomatology may be attributed to the non-functioning parathyroid cyst. The diagnosis is rarely made before exploration. The cysts are thin walled, smooth, of varying sizes and contained clear, opalescent or haemorrhagic fluid. Histopathological examination reveals clusters of parathyroid cells dispersed in the wall of the cyst. Surgical removal is the treatment of choice and can be performed with minimal morbidity.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study is to report a unique association of clinical and pathological findings in a neonate. Foregut enteric duplication cysts--rare developmental anomalies that are associated with midline vertebral fusion anomalies.
METHODS: We had a neonate with foregut duplication cyst who presented at birth with respiratory distress. The child also had associated communicating hydrocephalus. The patient underwent excision of the duplication cyst along with a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt.
RESULT: The excised specimen revealed a duplication cyst lined by aberrant pancreatic tis

The patient, a 55-year-old asymptomatic man, was referred to our hospital in October 1995 for further investigation of a chest ++roentogenographic abnormality found during a "physical check-up". His chest X-ray showed a round shadow over the hilus of the left lung. Computed tomography revealed a homogeneous, low density mass bordering the esophagus, vertebral column, left lower pulmonary vein and descending aorta. Roentogenography after swallowing barium sulfate showed that the esophagus was compressed and displaced to the right in the anterior direction. Endoscopic ultrasound scan demonstrate

Mediastinal parathyroid cysts are very rare. Since the first report by DeQuervain, 19 cases have been reported. We encountered a case of mediastinal parathyroid cyst presenting as displacement of the trachea. The cyst originated in the lower portion of the left lobe of the thyroid gland and extended to the mediastinum, displacing the trachea and the esophagus. The monolocular mass was a thin walled cyst, and mognetic imaging indicated that it contained watery fluid. The left lobe of the thyroid gland was found to be displaced upward by the tumor, on thyroid scintigram done with technetium-99,

A 52-year-old woman with left posterior mediastinal cyst underwent surgical removal using thoracoscopy. Under general anesthesia by use of one lung ventilation, thoracoscopy was introduced through a trocar at the mid-axillary line of the 7th intercostal space. Grasping forceps were introduced through a incision in the anterior-axillary line of 4th and 5th intercostal space. The lung was held with grasping forceps. The lung was fixed to the region of anterior-mediastinum with the weight of forceps. Then posterior-mediastinum was able to be observed well by the operator. The thin cyst-wall was b

Hydatid cystic disease is a significant clinical problem in endemic countries. Hydatid cysts are most commonly located in the liver and lungs. Primary mediastinal hydatid cyst is a rare clinical entity. The diagnosis must be considered in a patient with a mediastinal mass, particularly in endemic regions. Mediastinal hydatid cysts causing paralysis of phrenic and recurrent laryngeal nerves have been rarely reported. We describe a rare case of primary mediastinal hydatid cyst associated with diaphragmatic palsy caused by compression of the left phrenic nerve, which was successfully treated with

Bronchogenic cyst (BC) is a rare congenital malformation of the lung. Most patients remain asymptomatic until adulthood while some are symptomatic in the first few years of life. However, symptoms in newborn period are rare. We report a case of a 3-day-old preterm baby with respiratory distress diagnosed as congenital lobar emphysema on chest X-ray. A CT scan revealed a mediastinal cyst causing obstructive lobar emphysema. The cyst was excised and pathological examination was suggestive of BC.

Mediastinal parathyroid cysts (PC) are rare, benign lesions, reported in fewer than 150 cases worldwide. Although most are asymptomatic and discovered incidentally on imaging, symptoms of dyspnea, dysphagia, hoarseness, palpitations, hypercalcemia, and innominate or jugular venous thrombosis have been reported. Sternotomy or thoracotomy has traditionally been the approach used to resect mediastinal PCs. We describe the first reported case of a robot-assisted resection of a mediastinal PC.

Cystic lesions of the mediastinum may be congenital or acquired. The differential diagnosis depends on their location in the mediastinum. Cysts in the posterior mediastinum are generally developmental cysts and are neurogenic or of foregut origin. We report the case of a 14-year-old boy, who presented with dry cough and progressively increasing breathlessness, and was found to have a cystic lesion in the posterior mediastinum. Fine needle aspiration from the cyst helped make a diagnosis of tuberculosis.

A 39 year-old male was admitted to our hospital because of relapsing episodes of pneumonia. His chest roentgenogram showed a consolidated shadow and cavity formation in the left lower lobe. During a left lower lobectomy an enteric cyst in the posterior mediastinum involving lung was found. This cyst in the lung contained normal gastric parietal cells and pancreatic tissue, and was surrounded by adenocarcinoma characteristic of gastric cancer. This is a rare case in which an adenocarcinoma arise from an enteric cyst in the mediastinum.

Hydatid disease is caused by the larval stages of a cestodes belonging to the genus Echinococcus. In humans, hydatid larva and cysts are located >90% in the liver and/or lungs. Primary mediastinal location, with absence of documented lung infection, is extremely rare and has not been previously reported in Chile. We report the first case of a primary mediastinal hydatid cyst in Chile and review the literature. A 38 year old woman was admitted because of a painful right supraclavicular mass, dyspnea on exertion and logical dysphagia. Presurgical evaluation evidenced a mediastinal tumor extendin

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital anomalies located in the mediastinum and lung parenchyma. We present the clinical findings and describe the mediastinoscopic treatment of a bronchogenic cyst at the subcarinal space in a 50-year-old man. CT revealed a lesion at the subcarinal space with soft tissue density. Initially, mediastinoscopy was performed for diagnostic purposes. Histopathological evaluation of biopsy material taken from the cyst wall confirmed that the lesion was a bronchogenic cyst. The cyst contents were drained and a sclerosant agent was applied to the cyst lumen via the drai

This is a rare case of thoracic duct cyst in 34-year-old woman. She complained of a left supraclavicular mass and admitted our hospital. A clinical examinations were all within normal limit. The chest X-ray and the magnetic resonance imaging examinations revealed a round tumor 65 x 40 mm in diameter with clear margin located at the left upper mediastinum. The slightly dilated thoracic duct was connected to the tumor. The left supraclavicular vein was compressed by the tumor. The cystectomy was performed under diagnosis of thoracic duct cyst by Trap door method on September, 17, 1999. Macroscop

Unilateral emphysema secondary to bronchial obstruction by a foregut-derived mediastinal cyst is rare. Here we describe an infant with a unilateral hyperlucent lung due to compression on the left main bronchus by an esophageal cyst, visualized by chest computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. A chest roentgenogram and a perfusion scan presented the normalized left lung after resection of the cyst.
