Neglect, defined as the failure of a caregiver to adequately provide safety, food, clothing, shelter, education, protection, medical/dental care, and supervision for a child in his/her care, is a relatively uncommon but important cause of child mortality. A retrospective review of pediatric deaths (age 18 years or less) referred to the Medical University of South Carolina Forensic Pathology Office for autopsy over the past 25 years revealed 16 deaths due to some type of pediatric neglect. Cases were analyzed as to age, sex, race, cause and manner of death, autopsy findings, ancillary studies,

'Far from the views of decision-makers': podoconiosis instruction at medical schools across endemic countries in Africa.

BACKGROUND: Podoconiosis is a neglected tropical disease that causes significant physical, emotional and financial suffering, especially among impoverished rural farmers. Sufficient physician training is integral to optimizing patient outcomes through timely diagnosis and appropriate management. Therefore we sought to characterize podoconiosis instruction offered to medical students in endemic African countries. METHODS: We invited faculty from 170 medical schools in all podoconiosis-endemic African countries to provide information about podoconiosis inclusion in medical curricula. Surveys we

Elder abuse and the dentists' awareness and knowledge of the problem--a national survey.

A national sample of 1,775 Canadian dentists, representing 13.2 per cent of all Canadian dentists, were evaluated via a mailed questionnaire about their knowledge, awareness of, and experiences with victims of elder abuse and/or neglect. In all, 83.3 per cent of respondents were aware, to varying extents, of elder abuse or neglect. The types of neglect most frequently observed included: neglect of personal

Child maltreatment as a risk factor for shame: A three-level meta-analytic review.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of research has examined the association between child maltreatment and shame. However, findings have varied considerably, precluding the attainment of conclusive results that could inform clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: The present meta-analysis aimed to quantitatively synthesize the association between child maltreatment and shame, and to examine potential moderating variables. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in Web of Science, ScienceDirect, PubMed, Google Scholar, and CNKI. A three-level meta-analysis was performed to synthesize the effect s

Self-neglect among older adults living alone in rural China: a latent profile analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Research on self-neglect in older adults often overlooks rural populations, especially those living alone. Existing studies rely heavily on scores, ignoring group distinctions and limiting intervention effectiveness. This study aims to examine self-neglect profiles, characteristics, and associated factors among rural older adults living alone. METHODS: We surveyed 499 rural older adults living alone in Southwest China using convenience sampling. Profile analysis and logistic regression were employed to explore self-neglect profiles and associated factors. RESULTS:

Childhood neglect: exploring a short questionnaire in Poland and Germany.

BACKGROUND: Estimates about childhood abuse and neglect in various countries of the world indicate that cases of neglect outnumber cases of abuse by far. However, childhood neglect itself constitutes a neglected domain in psychological and medical research; far more articles have been published about abuse. SAMPLING AND METHODS: A ten-item questionnaire assessing childhood neglect was administered to two surveys in Poland (n = 508) and Germany (n = 500) via the internet. RESULTS: Internal consistency was high in both countries, i.e. Cronbach's α was 0.82 in Poland and 0.88 in Germany. No dis

Frequency of suspected abuse/neglect in burn patients.

This study was conducted to determine the frequency of suspected abuse/neglect in pediatric patients with burns presenting to an emergency department. Criteria were established for the suspicion of abuse/neglect. During a 12-month period, 431 patients were evaluated. Eighty-four (19.5%) were suspected of being abused or neglected. The frequency of suspected abuse/neglect in single-parent families was 22%, compared to 10% for married couples (P = 0.027). There was no significant difference in the rate of suspected abuse/neglect in patients seen fewer than or more than 24 hours after the injury

The relationship between childhood trauma and medically self-sabotaging behaviors among psychiatric inpatients.

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to explore the relationship between five forms of childhood trauma and medically self-sabotaging behaviors (i.e., the intentional induction, exaggeration, and/or exacerbation of medical symptoms). METHOD: Using a cross-sectional sample of convenience, 120 psychiatric inpatients were surveyed about childhood sexual, physical, and emotional abuses, the witnessing of violence, and physical neglect, as well as 19 medically self-sabotaging behaviors (i.e., intentional behaviors that represent attempts to sabotage medical care). RESULTS: As expected, in this samp

Investigating the ME/CFS experience through qualitative analysis of memorial entries.

Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is an impairing chronic condition characterized by exhaustion and worsening symptoms following exertion, often accompanied by pain, sleep issues, and cognitive issues. Historically, ME/CFS was not considered to be linked to mortality, however, more recent studies have questioned this assumption. The National Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS) Foundation maintains a memorial list consisting of deceased individuals who had ME/CFS. This secondary qualitative thematic analysis analyzed 505 entries on the National CFID
