Optimizing Proper Waste Management in Pediatric Surgery: An Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Operating rooms (OR) are responsible for the majority of waste production in hospitals. Proper waste management including recycling is a sustainable initiative with no direct cost increase. We assessed the impact of our current institutional OR recycling program in selected general pediatric surgery procedures and estimated the potential impact of optimizing waste management. METHODS: A prospective observational study was performed by weighing waste and recycling generated by seven pediatric surgery interventions: inguinal (open/laparoscopic) and umbilical hernia repair, orchiopex

Disposal of fetal tissue following elective abortion: what women think.

BACKGROUND AND METHODOLOGY: UK regulations on managing fetal tissue after pregnancy loss, including abortion, are underscored by the concept of 'sensitive disposal'. This involves offering women burial or cremation and, when disposal is by the health care provider, separating fetal tissue from other clinical waste before incineration. We interviewed 23 women who had undergone one or more abortions about their understanding, attitudes and experiences of fetal tissue disposal and 'sensitive disposal'. Transcripts were analysed for representative themes. RESULTS: Prior to the abortion, most part

New approach for data evaluation of industrial wastewater treatment plant: methodology and case study for a coke and steel-processing plant.

Environmental monitoring of biological wastewater treatment plants (BWWTP) treating industrial effluents produces large amount of data. Frequent sampling is done in the influent and effluent but also in intermediate points. Samples are analyzed for classical and specific contaminants and physical-chemical parameters are monitored. In this paper data from a BWWTP treating the effluents of a coke and steel-processing factory are analyzed. Due to a complex situation, this BWWTP gave poor performances that did not match environmental regulations, meanwhile upgrading proved to be uneasy. Data analy

Disposing of Excess Vaccines After the Withdrawal of Oral Polio Vaccine.

Until recently, waste management for national immunization programs was limited to sharps waste, empty vaccine vials, or vaccines that had expired or were no longer usable. However, because wild-type 2 poliovirus has been eradicated, the World Health Organization's (WHO's) Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization deemed that all countries must simultaneously cease use of the type 2 oral polio vaccine and recommended that all countries and territories using oral polio vaccine (OPV) "switch" from trivalent OPV (tOPV; types 1, 2, and 3 polioviruses) to bivalent OPV (bOPV; types 1 and 3

Geochemical influences and mercury methylation of a dental wastewater microbiome.

The microbiome of dental clinic wastewater and its impact on mercury methylation remains largely unknown. Waste generated during dental procedures enters the sewer system and contributes a significant fraction of the total mercury (tHg) and methyl mercury (MeHg) load to wastewater treatment facilities. Investigating the influence of geochemical factors and microbiome structure is a critical step linking the methylating microorganisms in dental wastewater (DWW) ecosystems. DWW samples from a dental clinic were collected over eight weeks and analyzed for geochemical parameters, tHg, MeHg and bac

Comprehensive evaluation of typical medical waste treatment technologies in view of environmental and economic perspectives.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has caused a sharp increase in the amount of medical waste (MW), which is infectious and harmful to the environment and human body. However, existing MW disposal methods face challenges in achieving high treatment efficiency, and creates an urgent need for more cost-effective and environmentally friendly technologies. In this research, a comprehensive evaluation, including comprehensive environment assessment (CEA), life cycle assessment (LCA), and economic assessment (EA), was proposed for three typical MW treatment methodologies (i.e., in situ friction heat treatment

Quantitative study of controlled substance bedside wasting, disposal and evaluation of potential ecologic effects.

Drugs in wastewater arise from many sources. For health care, these include excretion and direct disposal (bedside wasting). The present study reports on the dispensing and wasting of 15 controlled substances (CS) at two health care facilities in Albany, NY over a nearly two year period. The study considered measures of ecotoxicity, drug metabolism, excretion and disposal of these CS. Potential alternatives to flushing of CS into wastewaters from healthcare facilities are discussed. Drug medication and waste collection records (12,345) included: numbers of drugs dispensed, returned and wasted.

Treatment of hospital wastewater effluent by nanofiltration and reverse osmosis.

Considerable concern exists regarding the appearance and effects of trace and ultra trace pollutants in the aquatic environment. In this context, it is necessary to identify relevant hot spot wastewater - such as hospital wastewater - and to implement specific wastewater treatment solutions. Membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology seems to be a suitable pre-treatment approach for the subsequent advanced treatment by high pressure membrane systems such as nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO). This paper is based upon investigations on the first full scale MBR for separate treatment of hosp

Reducing misclassification of medical waste: nudging stakeholders to reduce waste misclassification in a novel simulated operating room built environment.

BACKGROUND: The OR generates over 30% of a healthcare facility's total waste, with more than 60% classified as regulated medical waste (RMW). Municipal waste (MW) is commonly incorrectly classified as RMW, resulting in unnecessary costs and environmental burden. As such, this pilot study aimed to determine if interventions that provide visual cues for waste classification and improve ergonomics in the operating room (OR) can improve waste sorting accuracy. METHODS: In groups of two to four, participants were tasked with quickly solving tangram puzzles while periodically given simulated medica
