Cysticercosis of the central nervous system. I. Surgical treatment of cerebral cysticercosis: a 23 years experience in the Hospital das Clínicas of Ribeirão Preto Medical School.

Cysticercosis is the most frequent parasitosis of the nervous system and nowadays it is widespread through the world. Despite the development of anticysticercal drugs (praziquantel and albendazole), their efficacy is more marked in cases with parenchymal active cysts and they do not prevent complications such as hydrocephalus. Thus, many patients with neurocysticercosis require surgical intervention, generally of palliative nature, but that may occasionally produce a cure. The clinical outcome of 180 patients with cerebral cysticercosis who underwent surgical treatment form 1970 to 1993 was an

The use of epinephrine in out-of-hospital cardiac arres : A retrospective study of the effects of administration timing and cumulative doses on outcome in a physician-staffed emergency medical service system.

BACKGROUND: Epinephrine administration during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) has been a long-standing recommendation, but the evidence is controversial. This study investigated effects of epinephrine administration in a physician-staffed emergency medical service (EMS) system and for the first time addressed the quality of chest compressions. METHODS: Complete datasets of adult patients who suffered out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and received CPR were retrospectively analysed. Factors (time of collapse, bystander CPR, EMS arrival, initial cardiac rhythm, suspected cause of OHCA, an

Validation of the CaRdiac Arrest Survival Score (CRASS) for predicting good neurological outcome after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in an Asian emergency medical service system.

BACKGROUND: Survival with favorable neurological outcomes is an important indicator of successful resuscitation in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). We sought to validate the CaRdiac Arrest Survival Score (CRASS), derived using data from the German Resuscitation Registry, in predicting the likelihood of good neurological outcomes after OHCA in Singapore. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective population-based validation study among EMS-attended OHCA patients (≥18 years) in Singapore, using data from the prospective Pan-Asian Resuscitation Outcomes Study registry. Good neurological outcome

Systems failure in hospitals--using Reason's model to predict problems in a prescribing information system.

Both hospitals and hospital patients are bearing a massive cost as a result of the occurrence of medication prescribing errors in the public health system (Bates, D., et al. J. Am. Med. Inform. Assoc. 8(4):299-308, 2001; Lombardi, T. Medscape Pharm. Online J. 02(1), 2001; Roberts, M., and Stokes, J. eMed. J. Aust. 168:317-318, 1998). Consequently, it is important to examine and address the possible causes of this problem. In this paper we suggest that poor information systems may be a contributing factor in the occurrence of these errors. We research this issue in an HIV ward of a large public

Reducing Automated Dispensing Cabinet Overrides in the Perianesthesia Care Unit: A Quality Improvement Project.

BACKGROUND: Automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs) are used to store and dispense medications at the point of care. Medications accessed from an ADC before pharmacist order verification are removed using override functionality. Bypassing pharmacist verification can lead to medication errors; therefore, The Joint Commission considers overrides acceptable only in limited scenarios. During an 18-month period, the override rate in our perianesthesia care unit (PACU) was 17%, with oral midazolam accounting for roughly 40% of overrides. A multidisciplinary quality improvement (QI) project was initiate

Reducing Medication Errors in Children's Hospitals.

OBJECTIVES: Knowledge of the prevalence and characteristics of medication errors in pediatric and neonatal patients is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence and medication error characteristics in a pediatric hospital over 5 years and to determine whether serial error prevention programs to optimize a computerized physician order entry (CPOE) system reduce error incidence. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed medication errors documented between January 2015 and December 2019. RESULTS: A total of 2,591,596 prescriptions were checked, and 255 errors were identified. An automated procedure for determining patient numbers from episode of care records.

Records of in-patient stays which may contain multiple entries for the same patient are linked. These provide a profile of all in-patient hospital contacts for the same patient and statistics from which prevalence measures can be estimated. The linkage procedure is designed to link Scottish Morbidity Records for patients of the Greater Glasgow Health Board. It is suited to in-patient records generated from a relatively small number of hospitals (25-30). The records are selected by diagnosis. A suite of computer programs automates the method, which was initially investigated manually. Two types

Linked orders improve safety in scheduling and administration of chemotherapeutic agents.

The pharmacologic treatment for cancer must adhere to complex, finely orchestrated treatment plans, including not only chemotherapy medications, but pre/post-hydration, anti-emetics, anti-anxiety, and other medications that are given before, during and after chemotherapy doses. The treatment plans specify the medications and dictate precise dosing, frequency, and timing. This is a challenge to most Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE), Pharmacy and Electronic Medication Administration record (eMAR) Systems. Medications are scheduled on specific dates, referred to as chemo days, from the o

Development of an automatic medical summary report system.

We developed a medical summary report system. In this system, each department can specify the predetermined conditions for issuing the summary report. The summary is made through a hierarchical database in the integrated hospital information system according to the predetermined conditions. The summary automatically issued after reception of the outpatient, or also issued by on-line summary report program with the patient number if requested by doctors. The report is sent to the proper consulting room from the reception desk using an air-shooter. The report contains the patient information suc
