It is hypothesized that being mindfully aware is a spontaneous state of being. It is imbued with joy, peace and happiness. Such a state is periodically revealed during restful attentiveness or presence. It is also associated with spontaneous brain alpha activity of 8-13 Hz. In deep nonrapid eye movement sleep, there is synchronous delta activity at a coherent frequency of 0.1 Hz. Both of these brainwave ground states are spontaneous, calm and effortless. When any physical or mental effort is made, the alpha rhythm is desynchronized, and it is superposed by faster brain waves of beta (13-30 Hz)

OBJECTIVES: Fibromyalgia, a chronic pain syndrome, is often accompanied by psychological distress and increased basal sympathetic tone. In a previous report it was shown that mindfulness-based stress-reduction (MBSR) reduced depressive symptoms in patients with fibromyalgia with gains maintained at two months follow-up (Sephton et al., Arthr Rheum 57:77-85, 2007). This second study explores the effects of MBSR on basal sympathetic (SNS) activation among women with fibromyalgia.
METHODS: Participants (n = 24) responded to a television news appearance, newspaper, and radio advertisements. Effec

The aim of this paper is to contribute to the increased understanding of research methods on meditation as a tool for preventing and improving mental health by addressing the key challenges that research faces. Different definitions of meditation have been analyzed, and the complexity of the phenomenon, as well as the problems in conceptualization, have been highlighted. It has been emphasized that comparing the results of research is complicated by the fact that meditation encompasses a wide range of practices that differ in techniques, goals, and expected outcomes. A solution to this problem

Background: Meditation is the practice of focusing the mind on a particular object, thought, or activity to reach a calm, stable state. Meditation is been practised since ancient past in various forms. Transcendental meditation (TM) is widely practiced for its potential benefits on mental and physical well-being using the mantra "OM" as an object of awareness. Despite its popularity in the Global North, evidence of its impact on cognitive and psychological health remains limited in the Indian context. Aim: To evaluate the effects of TM practice on cognitive performance by audiovisual reaction

BACKGROUND: Recurrent aphthous ulcers (RAUs) are the most prevalent form of painful oral mucosal disorder. Conventional treatment for RAUs involves the administration of tetracycline, which has been shown to alleviate clinical signs and symptoms. However, this medication has been associated with a number of adverse effects. Heartfulness meditation (HM) has been shown to facilitate natural healing of ulcers without complications by developing a compassionate connection with oneself.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of HM in the management of RAUs and to compar

OBJECTIVE: One of the most prevalent psychiatric conditions that affect a person's quality of life, ability to function and productivity, and consequently the loss of national income, are anxiety disorders. Rajyoga meditation (RM) is a form of meditation that is performed without rituals or mantras and can be practiced anywhere at any time. In this study, we attempted to evaluate the modulation of psycho-physiological parameters in panic disorder patients by a technique of short-term on RM.
METHODS: In this prospective randomized control study, 110 patients with panic disorder were randomized

OBJECTIVES: Mind-body therapies (MBTs), including meditation, yoga, and mindfulness, create an interaction between the mind and body to enhance health. MBTs are perceived by both patients and healthcare professionals as valuable in the management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but the extent of this contribution is unclear, as are the patient subgroups who benefit most from MBTs. Therefore, this systematic literature review investigates the effects of meditation, mindfulness, and yoga in patients with RA.
METHODS: We searched four databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science (core collection, Chi

BACKGROUND: Caring for a loved one can be rewarding but is also associated with substantial caregiver burden, developing mental outcomes and affecting happiness. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of a four-week, 16-h presential meditation program on physiological and psychological parameters and vagal nerve activity in high-burden caregivers, as compared to a control group.
METHODS: A non-randomized repeated-measures controlled clinical trial was conducted.
RESULTS: According to the ANCOVA results, the global happiness score (F = 297.42, p < 0.001) and the scores for all sub

Many people with depression or anxiety turn to nonpharmacologic and nonconventional interventions, including exercise, yoga, meditation, tai chi, or qi gong. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews have shown that these interventions can improve symptoms of depression and anxiety disorders. As an adjunctive treatment, exercise seems most helpful for treatment-resistant depression, unipolar depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Yoga as monotherapy or adjunctive therapy shows positive effects, particularly for depression. As an adjunctive therapy, it facilitates treatment of anxiety disord

The effect of "SOHAM" meditation has been investigated using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in long-term meditators while they were meditating and not meditating. The results have revealed activation in left middle prefrontal cortex (MPFC) (Brodmann's area, BA 46), left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFG) (BA 44), left supplementary motor area (SMA) (BA 6) and left precuneus (BA 5) during the meditation period compared to the control period (no-meditation period). The results have been interpreted in terms of regulation of the emotional state, attention and working memory of the medita

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Individuals living with substance use disorder (SUD) often face unique challenges that can hinder their engagement in beneficial practices like meditation, which has been shown to support recovery and well-being. This study aimed to explore the perceived barriers to meditation with SUD, identify key obstacles, and inform future interventions that promote the adoption of a personal practice.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analytic study with a convenience sample of participants attending a treatment center for SUD. Data collected included demograp

Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), cataplexy, sleep paralysis, and hallucinations, and is often associated with other psychological and physiological disturbances. These symptoms lead to decreased social functioning and lower quality of life for individuals with narcolepsy. While current pharmacological treatment for narcolepsy can be effective in improving symptoms, there are also significant side effects (e.g., headaches, dizziness, insomnia). Meditation, a non-pharmacological intervention focusing on regulation of attention and emotion, could

People in prison are disproportionately affected by health problems, some of which lead to imprisonment and some of which are caused by imprisonment. Mental illness and substance use disorders fall into both of these categories, but they are not the only ailments affiliated with incarceration. Prior to their incarceration, many people in prison did not have safe housing or stable employment and job security, and institutional policies and/or budgetary concerns prevent many inmates from receiving adequate health care while in prison. Prison inmates in the United States are both victims and perp

INTRODUCTION: Insomnia is considered to be a serious public health issue affecting approximately 10% of adults. Chronic insomnia may increase the risk of health problem, psychological vulnerability and proneness to accidents. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is recommended as the first line of treatment. Even though CBT-I is widely considered as an effective therapy, 20 to 30% of patients do not respond to this treatment. Mindfulness therapy, known to reduce rumination and stress, could be an interesting complement to enhance CBT-I. The aim of this study is to evaluate the eff

OBJECTIVES: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive and fatal neurodegenerative disease that is clinically characterized by progressive weakness leading to death by respiratory insufficiency, usually within three years. Although the patient's intellect and personality usually remain unimpaired, as the disease progresses, the patient becomes immobile, develops wasting, and speech becomes impaired, often resulting in social isolation and a high degree of psychological suffering. Mindfulness meditation has proven to be effective technique for reducing distress in many chronic disease

The author describes her father's experience of being a Holocaust survivor and how his unfinished mourning contributed to her struggle with muteness, her own story being dwarfed by the magnitude of her father's losses. When her non-Jewish mother is chosen to be honored by Yad Vashem, the ceremony proves unexpectedly powerful. The witnessing by community, through the Internet, helps dissolve the shame and isolation, heals some of the trauma, and promotes greater psychological freedom. In creating this paper, the author memorializes her parents and her lost relatives, and succeeds in working thr
