[A case of sporadic and transient bradyarrhythmias in a patient with a glioma in the medulla oblongata].

In a 20-year-old female patient with a brain stem glioma in the medulla oblongata in association with paraplegia and respiratory paralysis, bradyarrhythmias such as sinus bradycardia and sinus arrest repeated sporadically and transiently, but soon subsided as radiotherapy was being delivered to the glioma in the medulla oblongata. The bradyarrhythmias were differentiated from sick sinus syndrome in their sporadic and transient character. The patient responded normally to atropine, isoproterenol, and phenylephrine. Parasympathetic nerve reflexes induced by Aschner's, Czermak's, and Valsalva's m

A rare case of haemangioblastoma of the medulla oblongata with atypical clinical course.

An autopsy case of haemangioblastoma of the medulla oblongata is presented. The clinical course was atypical and suggested a.l.s., demyelinization process of the CNS, or systemic disease. Two years before, paresis of IX, X, XII cranial nerves, left-side paresis and positive extensor plantar responses had been found. Pathological EEG recordings from both temporal regions with more pronounced changes on the left side had been observed too. In this case, we have not found any other tumours apart from that in the medulla oblongata.

[The pressor zone in the caudal part of the ventral surface of the medulla oblongata].

The changes of the vessel resistance of the skeletal muscle and the small intestine perfused with constant blood flow, under electrical stimulation of the ventrolateral medulla were studied on artificially ventilated urethane-anesthetized cats. The stimulation of rostral ventrolateral medulla increased vessel resistance in both regions. The stimulation in a region 2 mm caudal the middle of the rootlets of the twelfth cranial nerves decreased the vessel resistance, but in a region 4 mm caudal the middle of the same rootlets increased the vessel resistance of the skeletal muscle and the small in

Neuronal cell death in the arcuate nucleus of the medulla oblongata in stillbirth.

The hypothesis that unexplained stillbirth arises in a similar manner as the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is based in part on shared neuropathologic features between the two entities, including hypoxic-ischemic lesions such as white matter and brainstem gliosis, as well as aplasia or hypoplasia of the arcuate nucleus on the ventral surface of the medulla. The arcuate nucleus is the putative homologue of the respiratory chemosensory region at the ventral medullary surface in animals that is involved in central chemosensitivity. To determine arcuate nucleus pathology in stillbirth, and it

[Cavernoma of the medulla oblongata mimicking "Anorexia nervosa" - a case report].

An 11-year-old girl presented with recurrent vomiting, reduced food and fluid intake, weight loss and dizziness. In an external hospital she was diagnosed as having habitual vomiting and a beginning eating disorder. The physical examination revealed a very thin, malnourished child with abdominal pain on palpation but without neurologic deficits. Laboratory findings, X-rays, endoscopy and ultrasound revealed no pathological results either. Since the EEG and the cranial computed tomography (CT) were normal, we also suspected the beginning of an eating disorder especially due to some psychical pe

Acute hypotension and bradycardia by medulla oblongata compression in spinal surgery.

A 71-year-old man was admitted to the hospital with subarachnoid hemorrhage caused by a cervical dural arteriovenous shunt. During surgery, the patient developed acute hypotension and bradycardia, probably caused by surgical compression of the medulla oblongata. During posterior fossa and upper cervical surgery, monitoring cardiovascular, respiratory, and evoked potential parameters is advocated. In the current case, only cardiovascular monitoring detected alteration of brain stem function. Anesthesiologists should be aware that surgical manipulation of the dorsal medulla might cause hemodynam

Successful removal of a hemangioblastoma from the medulla oblongata: case report.

Hemangioblastomas are histologically benign tumors that occur exclusively within the neuraxis, most commonly in the posterior fossa. They are typically cystic tumors located in the cerebellum. Excision of the vascular mural nodules leads to cure. Brain stem lesions are rarely reported. Surgical extirpation of a solid brain stem hemangioblastoma is relatively risky and requires precise microsurgical techniques. We present a woman with a hemangioblastoma embedded in the medulla oblongata. This 33-year-old woman presented with occipital headaches and sensory ataxia. Complete and detailed preopera

Downbeat nystagmus with compression of the medulla oblongata by the dolichoectatic vertebral arteries.

A case is reported of downbeat nystagmus associated with compression of the caudal brain stem by the dolichoectatic vertebral arteries, which was revealed by magnetic resonance imaging. Before surgery, the patient complained of oscillopsia at rest. Downbeat nystagmus was observed in the primary eye position and was increased in lateral gaze, especially to the left. Surgical repositioning of the left vertebral artery succeeded in resolving the downbeat nystagmus in the primary position within 1 month, and the nystagmus in all the other gaze positions almost completely disappeared over the subse

Paramedian reticular nucleus: a thermolytic area in the rat medulla oblongata.

The effects of stimulation or ablation of the paramedian reticular nucleus (PRN) of the rat medulla oblongata on the thermal responses induced by ambient temperature changes, a pyrogen, or a hypothermic substance were assessed. Electrical stimulation of the PRN elicited thermolytic reactions (including decreased metabolism, cutaneous vasodilation and hypothermia) which could be mimicked by micro-injection of kainic acid (an excitotoxic amino acid) into the same region. Bilateral electrolytic lesions in the PRN prevented the animals from responding to heat stress (35 degrees C for 30 min) to so

Medulla oblongata dominated synaptic density network degeneration in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a brain network disorder closely associated with synaptic loss in the upper and lower motor neurons. However, the in vivo synaptic network changes and their progressive processes remain unclear. Here, we aim to investigate the synaptic density network connectivity and the likely sequences of synaptic loss in patients with ALS. METHODS: We examined data from 21 patients diagnosed with ALS and 25 sex- and age-matched healthy controls (HCs) who underwent PET imaging with the SV2A radioligand [18F]SynVesT-1. The individual synaptic density simila

[Organotypic cultures of free-floating sections of human embryonic medulla oblongata].

The aim of the present study was the development of organotypic culture of embryonic nerve tissue of human brain, which is necessary for the study of the effect of blood serum factors in mental diseases and their medicinal treatment. For the cultivation the sections of medulla oblongata were taken from human 9-10 week embryos obtained at legal medical abortion. Free-floating sections were cultured using a modified roller method for 4 weeks. By using the methods of light and electron microscopy, as well as of immunocytochemistry, it was demonstrated that within the cultured sections the differe

[A case report of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder with lesions of the medulla oblongata].

The article presents modern diagnostic criteria for neuromyelitis optic spectrum disorders (NMOSD) in AQP4-IgG-seropositive patients with limited or atypical forms, brain, diencephalon and brainstem leasions, who have a high risk of future relapses. On the example of a clinical case, it has been shown that area postrema syndrome can occur as the only single manifestation in the onset of NMOSD, which complicates the diagnosis of NMOSD and delays timely treatment. In turn, the delayed pathogenetic therapy during the first attack of NMOSD may cause exacerbations and patients disability.

Body lateropulsion as the primary manifestation of medulla oblongata infarction: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Isolated body lateropulsion is a possible predominant manifestation of medulla oblongata infarction, and can occur without vestibular and cerebellar symptoms. However, it is relatively rare and challenging to diagnose. CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old woman was admitted to the Harris International Peace Hospital complaining mainly of instability when standing and walking for the previous 8 hours. Based on the neural localization and multiple head magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations, a diagnosis of cerebral infarction (vertebrobasilar system) was made. Consequently, the p

Spontaneous Subclavian Artery Dissection Causing Ischemia of the Medulla Oblongata and Cerebellum.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous subclavian artery dissection is a rare etiology. Spontaneous artery dissection causing brain ischemia is rare in all ischemic strokes. However, in young to middle-aged patients with brain ischemia, spontaneous carotid or vertebral artery dissection causing ischemic stroke accounts for 10-25%. CASE REPORT: A 58-year-old man with a history of hypertension presented to the Emergency Department with a sudden onset of left-arm paresthesia and numbness followed by symptoms of vertigo and vomiting. A neurological examination showed left-arm paresthesia, horizontal-rotational

[The distribution of NADPH-diaphorase and neuronal no synthase in rat medulla oblongata nuclei].

The distribution of nitroxide ergic neurons in the medulla oblongata nuclei in Wistar rats (n = 8) was studied histochemically (NADPH-diaphorase) and using immunohistochemistry with an antiserum against neuronal form of nitric oxide synthase (nNOS). NADPH-diaphorase activity was found in large and small neurons of the sensory, autonomic and motor nuclei. The latter were especially rich in the cells demonstrating the activity of the enzyme. Unlike NADPH-diaphorase, nNOS in the corresponding nuclei was always detected in the fewer number of neurons, predominantly of small sizes. The sensory nucl

Risks and causes of cervical cord and medulla oblongata injuries due to acupuncture.

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture has become one of the most popular alternative medicines in the world today. Some acupuncturists still intentionally embed entire needles deep in the tissue for treatments, and some patients stick needles into their own bodies on their own. CASE DESCRIPTION: Surgical removal of an accidentally broken acupuncture needle due to self-acupuncture that was embedded in the medulla oblongata and cerebellum was performed. The broken needle migrated further into the brain in a few days. Contrary to expectation, it was extremely laborious to find the needle, which turned out to

Dural metastasis at medulla oblongata: a rare cause of vocal fold paralysis.

Malignancy is a major cause of vocal fold paralysis. Nevertheless, metastatic disease at the brainstem leading to high vagal paralysis is rarely encountered. We illustrate an unusual case of unilateral vocal fold paralysis caused by dural metastasis directly compressing on the nucleus ambiguus. The median position of the paralysed vocal fold is inconsistent with the Wagner and Grossman theory predicting the location of the lesion.

An analysis of nicotinic and opioid processes in the medulla oblongata and nucleus ambiguus of the dog.

Effects of opioids and nicotine on blood pressure and heart rate were studied by microinjections in the region of nucleus ambiguus of acutely decerebrated dogs. Nicotine (5 micrograms/0.5 microliter) microinjected into the region of nucleus ambiguus produced hypotension accompanied by either bradycardia or tachycardia. Both types of response were antagonized by mecamylamine (10 micrograms/0.5 microliter) but not by naloxone (10 micrograms/0.5 microliter). Fentanyl (5 micrograms/0.5 microliter) and ethylketazocine (10 micrograms/0.5 microliter) decreased blood pressure and heart rate after micr
