Effects of ruminal lipopolysaccharides on growth and fermentation end products of pure cultured bacteria.

Elevated levels of ruminal lipopolysaccharides (LPS) have been linked to ruminal acidosis; however, they result in reduced endotoxicity compared to LPS derived from species like Escherichia coli. Additionally, there is a knowledge gap on the potential effect of LPS derived from ruminal microbiome on ruminal bacteria species whose abundance is associated with ruminal acidosis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of LPS-free anaerobic water (CTRL), E. coli-LPS (E. COLI), ruminal-LPS (RUM), and a 1:1 mixture of E. coli and ruminal-LPS (MIX) on the growth characteristics and fe

The mediating roles of gut microbiota in the associations of air pollution and meteorological factors with metabolic syndrome.

We characterized distinct gut microbial community clusters associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and identified key genera underlying these patterns. Health-associated clusters were dominated by beneficial genera such as Bacteroides and Prevotella with known metabolic protective functions. Environmental exposures (air pollution and temperature) were associated with gut microbiota composition, and may increase the risk of MetS. Our findings further suggest that specific bacterial genera, particularly Megamonas and Megasphaera, may statistically mediate the associations of long-term exposure

Biological Validation of the PSC-MCAT: Analyzing Dental Plaque Microbiota Across Caries Risk Levels in Preschoolers.

OBJECTIVE: Although Caries Risk Assessment (CRA) tools are widely recognised in preventive dentistry for predicting dental caries risk in children, there is a notable lack of studies addressing CRA within the Chinese population. This study aimed to evaluate the biological validity of the modified caries-risk assessment tool for preschool children (PSC-MCAT) by analysing the oral microbiome of children stratified by caries risk. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive analysis of the oral microbiome was conducted on 72 preschool children categorised into low- (L), moderate- (M), and high-risk (

Monensin phase-out in Norwegian turkey production decreases Bifidobacterium spp. abundance while enhancing microbial diversity.

Intestinal tissue damage caused by coccidiosis is an important predisposing factor for necrotic enteritis in turkeys, and both diseases are common health issues in turkey production. In Norway, the in-feed ionophore coccidiostat monensin has been used as a preventive measure to combat coccidiosis since the late 1980s. In 2022, however, preventive use of monensin was phased out, which led to an undesired increase in antibiotic treatments among turkey flocks, largely due to necrotic enteritis. The aim of this study was to investigate the overall effects of the preventive monensin use and antibio

Gut microbiota differences between psoriatic arthritis and other undifferentiated arthritis: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Psoriatic arthritis (PSA) is a form of immune-mediated inflammatory arthritis that predominantly begins with enthesitis. Studying the gut microbiota of PSA patients may offer new insights into the pathogenesis of enthesitis, compared to other arthritis. We designed a prospective study to examine gut microbiome of patients with PSA, primarily with enthesitis and dactylitis, and compared the data with other undifferentiated types of arthritis (NO PSA) patients, without enthesitis or dactylitis. METHODS: We enrolled 9 PSA patients and 10 NO PSA patients in this study. We excluded rhe

Rumen microbiota inoculation indicates collaborative mechanisms enhancing propionate supply to alleviate weaning stress in lambs.

BACKGROUND: The transition from milk to solid feed during weaning often imposes metabolic stress on young ruminants due to energy deficits. Previous studies suggest that ruminal microbiota transplantation from adults to juveniles can alleviate weaning stress, but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly defined. RESULTS: In this study, 48 Hu lambs were randomly assigned to two groups (n = 24 each): an inoculated group (Inoc) that received lyophilized ruminal microbiota and a control group (Ctrl) that received no inoculation. We evaluated rumen fermentation characteristics, blood metabolites, h

Multi-omics analysis of the gut microbiome and metabolites associated with the psychoneurological symptom cluster in children with cancer receiving chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Children with cancer receiving chemotherapy commonly report a cluster of psychoneurological symptoms (PNS), including pain, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and cognitive dysfunction. The role of the gut microbiome and its functional metabolites in PNS is rarely studied among children with cancer. This study investigated the associations between the gut microbiome-metabolome pathways and PNS in children with cancer across chemotherapy as compared to healthy children. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted. Cancer cases were recruited from Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and hea

CST-Based Molecular Profiling of Vaginal Microbiota Validated by qRT-PCR and 16S Amplicon Sequencing.

The vaginal microbiome is commonly classified into five Community State Types (CSTs) based on the dominance and relative abundance of Lactobacillus species, which play a central role in maintaining vaginal homeostasis through the production of lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide. Disruption or depletion of Lactobacillus spp. Leads to elevated vaginal pH, thereby promoting the overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria associated with bacterial vaginosis (BV). Although next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based microbiome profiling has been widely used to characterize vaginal microbial communities, its routine

Comparison of oral and gut microbiome highlights the role of oral bacteria in systemic inflammation in HIV.

UNLABELLED: Chronic HIV-1 infection is associated with increased inflammation-related comorbidities, despite effective viral suppression with antiretroviral therapy. While the role of the gut microbiome in inflammation is well studied, the contribution of the oral microbiome remains less clear. This study investigates the relationship between the oral and gut microbiomes in driving systemic inflammation in persons with HIV. This cross-sectional study utilized archived samples from 198 participants (99 with HIV and 99 without HIV). Oral and gut microbiome composition was analyzed via 16S rRNA s

Characterization of Intestinal Microbiota in Lambs with Different Susceptibility to Escherichia coli F17.

Diarrhea is one of the most commonly reported diseases in young farm animals. Escherichia coli (E. coli) F17 is one of the major pathogenic bacteria responsible for diarrhea. However, the pathogenicity of diarrhea in lambs involving E. coli F17 strains and how E. coli F17 infection modifies lambs' intestinal microbiota are largely unknown. To evaluate diarrhea in newborn lambs with an infection of E. coli F17, 50 lambs were selected for challenge experiments and divided into four groups, namely, a high-dose challenge group, low-dose challenge group, positive control group, and negative control

Etiology and Diagnosis of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: Looking Beyond Gonorrhea and Chlamydia.

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a clinical syndrome that has been associated with a wide range of potential causal pathogens. Three broad groups of organisms have been isolated from the genital tract of people with PID: sexually transmitted organisms such as Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma genitalium, and Trichomonas vaginalis; bacterial vaginosis (BV)-associated species and genera such as Atopobium vaginae, Sneathia, and Megasphaera; and genera and species usually associated with the gastrointestinal or respiratory tracts such as Bacteroides, Escherichia coli, St

An updated study of the relationship between bacterial infections and women's immune system, focusing on bacterial compositions with successful pregnancy.

Genital tract infections can cause a variety of harmful health outcomes, including endometritis, bacterial vaginosis, and pelvic inflammatory disease, in addition to infertility. Anaerobic bacteria, such as Gardnerella vaginalis, Megasphaera spp., and Atopobium vaginae, are more commonly identified in cases of bacterial vaginosis than lactobacilli. It is unknown how the microorganisms that cause pelvic inflammatory diseases and endometritis enter the uterus. Both prospective and retrospective research have connected pelvic inflammatory disorders, chronic endometritis, and bacterial vaginosis t

Bacterial Vaginosis-Associated Prevotella timonensis Enhances Dendritic Cell-T Cell Clustering and Subsequent T Cell Proliferation.

Dysbiosis of the vaginal microbiome is associated with increased inflammation in the female genital tract. Microbiota associated with bacterial vaginosis (BV), such as Gardnerella vaginalis, Megasphaera elsdenii, and Prevotella timonensis, replace the health-associated bacterium Lactobacillus crispatus and cause inflammation affecting mucosal integrity and immunity. However, it remains unclear how these BV-associated bacteria modulate immune cells and enhance inflammation. Here, we investigated whether BV-associated bacteria directly affected dendritic cell (DC) function. Notably, P. timonensi

Veillonellaceae family members uniquely alter the cervical metabolic microenvironment in a human three-dimensional epithelial model.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a gynecologic disorder characterized by a shift in cervicovaginal microbiota from Lactobacillus spp. dominance to a polymicrobial biofilm composed of diverse anaerobes. We utilized a well-characterized human three-dimensional cervical epithelial cell model in conjunction with untargeted metabolomics and immunoproteomics analyses to determine the immunometabolic contribution of three members of the Veillonellaceae family: Veillonella atypica, Veillonella montpellierensis and Megasphaera micronuciformis at this site. We found that Veillonella spp. infections induced s

Gut dysbiosis narrative in psoriasis: matched-pair approach identifies only subtle shifts correlated with elevated fecal calprotectin.

UNLABELLED: Many studies have reported gut microbiome alterations in psoriasis patients, suggesting dysbiosis. While evidence for dysbiosis and its link to pathogenesis remains inconclusive, murine models of psoriasis suggest that gut microbiome alterations develop in response to psoriasis-like inflammation. Hence, the dominant narrative about gut microbiome alterations' impact on disease should be evaluated critically with more data and a well-powered approach. In this case-control study, we used deep sequencing of fecal samples from 53 psoriasis patients and 47 healthy donors to reconstruct
